  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BOMB EVF (OLED) - First Impressions and Review

I got mine too, and it is awesome, but I have a questions for the others who have them, or for RED.
Do your buttons actually change the brightness, as with the old Bomb, or not? mine does NOT change brightness, it does not really need it, but sometimes it would be nice to adjust it a bit.
Is this a feature of the OLED, not needing adjustments?

it's been said somewhere that they are not currently enabled in the current firmware but will be in the next build...

the buttons on my oled bomb evf also are not doing anything, but there was no need to adjust the brightness so far. i believe i have been reading somewhere, that jarred has stated, that button thing will be solved with a future firmware update...

would be nice to have this buttons user assignable. then i would give them the functions edge and magnification...

Does the New EVF fit in the Epic Pelicase as well as the old one do ?

Yes, it is only the inner components that are different.

Also, when you upgrade from an old Bomb, you get back the same outer shell but with "OLED EVF" laser engraved on the side.

I got mine yesterday and I thought I was getting my Redmote because I got an email last week that the Redmote was getting ready to be shipped. I get the box and it's much bigger than I thought it would be. I opened the package and was staring at the box that said Red EVF. It took me about 10 seconds of staring at it to realize that it wasn't the Redmote. All of a sudden when I realized what it was I got an immediate happy face and I felt like a child on Christmas. Thanks Red, I love the EVF.

I'm experiencing problems with our camera so I don't know if this is associated. We received our OLED EVF and excitedly put it on our Epic (V3.0.0) The buttons obviously don't work so I can't make any adjustments to try and rectify my EVF issue.

The best way to descibe what I am seeing is that the picture is very sharp - much sharper than the LCD EVF, however if you were to think of grey scale from 0% to 100%, the range from 20% and upwarrds is at 80% & brighter, with the bottom 20% crushed blacks, i.e I am seeing way too much detail in the shadows which are nearly as bright as the highlights, but the bottom end of the shadows are crushed black. We are shooting a vampire show, so there is a lot of warm light, however the Epic's LCD monitor is great for viewing but not operating. Is this a dodgy OLED or to do with the firmware build? We have tried it on 2 cameras with the same results, but both cameras also exhibit other common issues so I don't know if this is related, though I think not.

Any ideas?

I sure hope playback will get enabled with the EVF asap... sure is annoying having to switch over to the LCD to play back one or two clips.

other question: where do i get a leather eyepiece cushion for the oled bomb ???
does anyone know a store where i can buy it in europe ?

filmtools.com has this things for sale, approx. 5 us$ for the eypiece cushion and 164 us$ for shipping via ups, holy shit...

Hehe... You wouldn't think it, but shipping from the USA to Canada is painfully expensive for no real reason. But yeah, even the $164 price tag seems out of line. a USPS International Priority box, takes about a week and a day or two, is $13. You could stuff at least a dozen of those eyepiece cushions in one of those small boxes.

jeff, unfortunately there is no selectable option for shipping to europe... only dhl for 164,-- usd...
i would really like to buy some things from the filmtools shop, but not without a cheaper way of shipping.

Norbert,
I have to go to Filmtools to pick some stuff up. I can grab you the eyepiece cushions and send them via USPS if you want.
