  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BLACK LEVEL

this is why i'm hoping fcp 8 will have full dpx and open exr support. you'd bypass quicktime all together and not deal with its drama. keep in mind too, what you see in your FCP canvas may not look the same on the file that's exported either.

I think the best way to see if it will look right is, export your qt file from resolve, BM uncompressed or anything else along those lines to keep your full range values that you graded for on your projector. I assume it's on p3 settings or something along those lines.

bring it into FCP, and hook it up to the projector to see how it looks.

finally to put the nail in the coffin, if things look good on your projector monitoring out of FCP, and it just doesn't look right on the computer, than you should be good, but as a final, I'd export out of qt, convert it to DPX (which is what you'll need to do to go to film or DCP anyway) and bring that back into resolve and look at it on your projector again.

It sounds long and stupid but that's the only practical way to see what your image will look like, on a projector, after all those generations. If it looks right to about right by the time you hit the projector on DPX with those full range values. It should be close to spot on when it goes to the film out.

It works great with DPX, if you use GlueTools.

yeh but don't know how much I can count on glue tools with new fcp 8 coming out, and as a professional tool I'd like to see it work natively rather than having to spend more money on a plugin, that not everybody is going to get. Great if you work on your own, but freelance bracket and even small post houses probably wouldn't invest in it.

Having something built in everybody can use makes workflow for everybody that much better!

It would be utterly amazing if that were the case. Apple clearly is going in a different direction than this would imply. If the various well-reasoned blog posts are true, Apple will likely abandon QT as we know it in favor of direct a/v control at the OS level. That's basically what the iOS devices do. My belief is that Apple intends FCPx for a broader marketplace than has need for DPX. Think video journalists a la CNN. The kind of functionality you want is more in the Adobe/Quantel/Autodesk sphere of reality.
