  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

ok.. good. Just wanted to make sure these were not going out to other RED customers yet to avoid voiding warranties.

Hey Erik,

A while ago you said you may have known of a reason we were getting stepping or jittering on some of the lenses during focus pulls. Is this somethig you're still looking into?

We do understand the problem.

Any customer having an issue needs to test the lens with the Impero, and then the Mac app. In the mac app send a lens report, and tell us about the behavior with the Impero and with the Mac, in the comments field. Do this with all of your lenses. We will then follow up with you on next steps.

We don't just make lens mounts for RED cameras. Our PL-mount has the same footprint as our EF-mount, which is supportive of our "any lens, any camera" mantra.

Hi Erik,

What are the other cameras birger makes mounts?

Are there any plans of doing something with this kind of functionality with the 5D and 7D cameras?

Thanks,

Pedro

Don't know birger's plan but 5D 7D would seem like an obvious next move.

I know birger was around making mounts for industrial cameras long before the REDONE. The original Birger EF mount (which is basically the front portion of the Birger for REDONE) was made to be adaptable to almost any camera. I believe they sold hundreds to the military and many more to scientific/industrial users but the customer would often do the physical attachment themselves, so Birger may not even be aware of all the cameras it is on. Basically you just need a spacer block. I wouldn't be surprised if there were Birger EF mounts on Phantoms and others - and even some film cameras.

I had a prototype Birger mount on my REDONE SN#206 just a couple weeks after I got it in January 2008. Backfocus/collimation was set with shims (like most film cameras and the original REDONE.)

The whole mess of delays, etc. was mainly due to the fact that Birger decided to be nice and give us an adjustable backfocus like the second version of the RED had (you newbies may not know that the original REDONE did not have a backfocus adjuster) - suffice it to say it created a lot of headaches but once announced also made it difficult to backtrack to the non-adjustable.

Seems like the form factor would have to be different and/or there would be some real surgery to the camera to make it work... just looking at the Birger and my Rebel side by side. I like the idea for sure. The interchangeable mount part of Scarlet/Epic is a really nice design advantage RED has.

I think you could make a simple device physically like a teleconverter so that it wouldn't need to modify the camera. Would need some kind of slight diopter (too close to midnight for me to figure out if it would be negative or positive) to fix the flange focal distance issue but it should be able to be done with minimal image degradation (even if it slightly softens the image it might actually help with aliasing since the OLPF on the 5D isn't really optimized for the video)

Speaking about Epic and Scarlet, and I point my words especially to Jarred, is it possible that RED gave the specs of the new mount to Erik? Many of us will have difficulties to swap to Epic-X until there's an EF mount available. To avoid the delays and all the hassle with warranty there was the last time, it would benefit all Birger mount and Impero users if Erik gets the specs as early as possible. Obviously, we would like to use Epic-X with full power from day one. Jarred do you hear our prays?

Epic was designed to allow easier access to new lens mounts. So i doubt that warrenty issues will arise the next time around.

Jay

incorrect assumption.

I hear you Lauri.. all i can say is that there will be an EF mount available from someone.

Will the i/data connection be a more modern/robust design or still the fragile cable?

Any word on progress of the Element Technica EOS/EF mount?

Michael.. the idata cable in the REDONE was never supposed to be seen... or touched.. remember? your post implies it was poorly designed... which it was not. It was only when people where cracking open the camera to do things they were not supposed to do that problems started happening.

We are going to much more strict with what people can do and not do when it comes to going deeper under the skin and what attaches electrically to our mount, or any other proprietary connection on Epic.

We have tried real hard to swim in the grey area.. let some guys in behind the wall, but its been very unfriendly, disorganized, lots of surprises, and the agreement terms have not been followed, and the burden on our support department for some 3rd partiy products have become pretty heavy lately.

The good thing is though that there are a bunch of vendors and 3rd parties that we have worked with that have been incredibly great, so many doors will still stay open.

I don't agree with that but I also don't want to argue. You are a good guy and you all are doing great things and I'm excited to move on to Epic.

Jarred: I have a great interest in doing things with Epic 645 with existing 645 lenses - probably in dumb mode. My hope is you will design it such that it is possible to put on alternate mounts without having to worry about fragile connections. I think this is possible. I also would like Epic not to be such a closed system and to be more field service friendly like most of the truly professional (i.e. Varicam, F900) MP cameras of the last 30 years. I sort of assumed that the 2nd generation would be. Is this likely/possible? And I don't mean to be antagonistic - I do understand that we are probably moving more toward the paradigm of a highend DSLR where even though it is fully professional it is so totally integrated that it isn't really field serviceable - than the broadcast camera paradigm where it is specifically designed to be opened. The trade off is with DSLRs a pro can have a backup body with them for only a couple grand. With Epic or a broadcast camera or an Arri35 we are talking $30K+ so not easy to afford a backup.

no worries Michael the only thing we can do is try and make sure you guys have solutions for what you need to do. It would be dumb of us to ignore the need of alternative mounts, the popularity of this thread is enough to warrant facilitating that.. the birger mount for example has been a life saver for many people.. its a great product that has a long history of unfortunate politics.

understatement of the day.

No worries here either Jarred. I'm sure you will weigh the variables and do what makes the most sense.

Now since nobody reads this thread why don't you quietly tell us when Epic is going to ship. We promise we won't tell anyone.

Amen to that, brother.

Will there be a Canon (or: Contax for that matter) mount offering (warranty keeping), parallel or close to the release of the Epic X? Would love to avoid a new rollercoaster tour with my future relationship ;)
