  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Received the Impero today and took an hour to test it. At first, by reading this thread I got an impression I might find some trouble, but following the earlier instructions of syncing the mount and Impero by pressing I while swicthing Impero on and then following these instructions

Big change in behavior is independent axis calibration. "CAL" button only does the active axis (i.e. "F" or "I") and returns the lens to the same position as the knob. If you need to reset the zero position on the knob, push "FN" + "CAL".

everything works out just fine. Well ... as soon as realized to swicth the lens on AF mode. The focus is smooth and the iris control is as smooth as one can think of taking into account the 1/3 stops. And yes, lens data appears on screen without any trouble. I'm on Red Build 20 and Birger Library 20a and tested with Canon L-series lenses. Summing up, great piece of work that greatly improves the camera usability. I'm also impressed of the craftmanship, especially how nicely the Bluetooth antenna has been added to the original Impero.

One question to Erik: Is there a reason why the lens data shows no longer infinity? I remember at some point seeing the infinity mark at least in the Birger software. For instance, the EF 16-35mm/f2.8 L II USM lens stops at 25m and I can also turn the ring bit towards infinity. The same in the other end. Although the lens stops showing 0.28m, I'm able to turn the ring closer. However, not sure whether the lenses move although the focus ring turns a bit.

Here’s my contribution to making this thread the longest in the history of internet!

I have searched this thread, and others, like Sherlock Holmes but do still feel I have to get this straightened out:

I’m planning to use my just arrived Birger Canon mount on my incoming Red One, manually at first, and then in the future with an Impero.

Q1. If I put the mount on the Red One NOT connecting the i-data cable from the R1 to the mount, the Red warranty is NOT violated, right?

Q2. If I put the mount on the Red One CONNECTING the i-data cable from the R1 to the mount, the Red warranty IS violated, right?

Q3. What papers, and from who, do I need before I can start the PL/Birger mount shift procedure, if I do NOT want to violate any Red warranty?

Q4. If I do NOT connect the i-data cable to the mount (only the power cable) I can still adjust focus manually by the lens ring AND by the push buttons? AND also adjust the aperture with the push buttons, right?

Anyone out there absolutely sure about these things?

Thanks!

We've had our Impero up and running with the Birger for about a week now and couldn't be happier. A dream come true.

However, we do not have lens data. We are assuming that this lack is due to the fact that our camera has not yet gone in to Red for the updated i-data cable?

Does this seem right or are we missing something else entirely?

Thanks,

David have you not had the Audio upgrade done yet? You gotta get your camera in soon, as the upgrade program is ending soon....

Has anyone experienced problems establishing a connection between BEI and the mount via bluetooth? I've done it before, and was mindlessly simple, but today, trying to upgrade to 20a, I can't get the BEI to find my Birger Mount. I've tried power-cycling everything, change distance between the Mac and the Camera, lens on, lens off. But nothing. Unfortunately, this particular thread is too big to search. Birger really needs its own section!

If Vegas can get one under workflow, can't Birger get one under accessories?

Jarred -

Geeeeeesh... I've been sitting here patiently waiting for my number to come up. I gotta check my spam from time to time. I'll give you guys a call today and bring it down next week.

Many thanks for noticing this.

Kyle, yes, I've struggled with the same problem. But, may found a solution today. Once you have your computer running, remove the cable from the RED aux port and then put it back. Then just wait until the i-data appears on screen and then try bluetooth pairing the computer and the mount. In addition, keep your computer on the same side of the camera as the mount.

Hmm.. tried those things. Still not working. I tried from another PC. The PC can see the Mac, and the Mac can see the PC, but neither of them can see the Birger. :-( I have lens data, and the lens is calibrating, etc. I've got to be missing something.

Just in case, did you first pair the computer and the mount, thereafter create the serial connection and only then ran BEI? Usually I have to try several times the serial connection before it is found.

I know a lot of firmware matching issues for i/data between the Birger and RED build 20 have been sorted out, but what about the release build?

For RED Release Build 17 (v3.4.1) which Birger mount firmware is the most compatible?

Sigh.. Remembered the PIN. Now it won't pair again. :-( Nothing will see the Birger device as a BT device.

Does your PC Bluetooth window has option "View devices in range"? If so, click that one first. After that right click the Birger icon create the pairing by inserting the PIN code, and threafter right click the icon again and choose "serial connection". Then, do not close this window but just lauch BEI Interface software.

The bluetooth connection seems to disappear if it is not used. So, start BEI immediately after establish the serial connection.

just thought I would add some beautiful visual to our thread.

I have a question for Erik. It's a little off topic but I posted it here since this thread is "Birger Lens Mount Reservations",
I ordered the mount 8 days ago, but still no confirmation. I sent three emails asking about the status at different times, but got no answer. I am confused now and don't know what to do. My bank confirmed the transfer.
Please, I want to know if something went wrong? So I can reorder..

What? I hope this doesn't refer to the European centre. I'm still waiting to be called and I've asked several times about the status.
