Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Something to watch out for

Something to watch out for

I had the birger working on the bench perfectly before I did the installation.

After the installation, I realized that it shipped with the front part already installed so the columation markings were hidden. I took them off, looked at them, went "Hmmm" and put it back on.

I fired it up and it didn't work at all--no power. Scratched my head a few times and called Erik.

Erik suggested that when I put the outer-ring back on I may have chosen the wrong holes and asked if all of the holes lined up--The didn't.

Apparently, there are 12 holes around the ring that could fit but only 4 will work. You should put it back so they line up--if you don't--no power.

Took it off, put it back on properly and it worked perfectly.

Just a little tip to put in the back of your mind for if you are ever in a situation that after/during columation things stop working you'll think to yourself "oh, yeah, didn't that guy post something about alignment..."

Erik, Curt--you guys rock. I love the Mount and can't wait for the Imperio--especially after seeing Jay's video. Oh, and Jay, You rock, too--thanks for your efforts.

I am sure these questions have been answered but I didnt have time to dig through this monster thread:

1.) Is the Birger mount available for Nikon lenses
2.) How easy is it to change from the Red PL mount and back?

Although a Birger Nikon mount isn't available, you can use any manual Nikon lenses with a simple mechanical adapter that costs about $20. Since the ef flange focal distance is the shortest at 44mm Nikon, Contax/Yashica Zeiss (probably the best manual slr lenses for red), Leica, M42, etc. all work with these simple mechanical adapters. We shot for more than six months with these various lenses on a prototype birger mount.

cant wait for the imperio.

Jay.. you freggin rock man.

Birger.. you guys made me pay customs $87 again... the part no. and that the item was returned after repair was not mentioned in the fedex description :(

Push back on your customs broker. I am pretty sure we filled it out as a repair. Everybody is seeming to need to complain. I really hate this process.

Me too - it's a pain in the ass.

I got a bug about it a few months ago and got into it with Fedex - it took three months and several phone calls before someone would reveal the way to do it.

The solution is very simple Erik - just quote the outgoing Tracking Number on the documentation when the package is being returned. If you do that it's up to Fedex to sort it out.

Edit: Saying that it is a warranty repair on the documentation doesn't seem to work with them - they have to have a tracking number.

Also: I paid a heap of duty because it was listed as "Photography Equipment" I would imagine it might also be considered a camera accessory - this is only 3%.

It can't be reclaimed - unless you have nothing better to do with your life.

Where have you got this one? I have trying to get it for the past 3 months, and it is back ordered everywhere.

I got it from B&H. It was backordered when I placed the order but they shipped it about 3 or 4 weeks later. You should just place an order somewhere. I think they are trickling in slowly from Canon, but not enough to fill the backorders and note them as in stock on the vendors sites.

554 pages and I still don't understand what the fuss is about... this product SUCKS!

I never looked cause I gave up on the idea that someone would actually set out to do this and pull it off with flying colors... the way we all imagined it should be.

:hat off:

Now if only Canon made an 18mm f1.4L and something wider too like a 16mm f1.8L or something.

I am NOT going to read the whole thread, so go ahead and yell at me if you feel you need to , but what are the "solutions" for this need that people are using right now? What wider faster lenses are being used ATM?

Are you serious?
Have you even used this product? If not, where do you get off saying this product sucks?

Try looking at the cost to lens quality factor for starters. Not to mention a pretty cool follow focus solution.

Nobody said there were wider, faster lenses. But there sure are some that come pretty close, for a lot less money.

Ok, you got me.

It's late...

No dude, its all good, my :hat off: thing could have been a bit more clear too, like ::takes hat off:: or something, I am beat as well

So I am reading a bit more cause I am obviously too exited to wait for posts... and somewhere in the middle of the thread (NOT reading from the beginning! lol) someone recommended an Arri 8mm UP, which is a PL mount right? So I am obviously missing out even more than I thought! Does the Briger let you switch to a PL mount as well as the Canon mount? Or do you have to remove the whole thing? Or do they probably mean to use a PL to Canon adapter since the 8mm would still be wide with it?

EDIT: Well I haven't found the info about the mounts and I am fading. I did realize however that a lot of these goodies were announced just a few months ago so I am not SO late to the party

I am sure there is a way to get f1.8 at least at wider focal lengths. But for now I must crash.

This will teach me not to ignore threads that have been active as heck for so long... :)

Yes I did. That is actually the reason why I am posting here. I never wanted to read this thread... it got soooo long :) But Kelley's videos caught me up to speed.

So I guess there is only a Canon mount right? But you can get the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 and it should work perfectly... the question is what about faster wide angles... There has to be something to avoid having to mess with mounts on set... not a good idea.

You're right, not a good idea to change the mount on set or in the field.

There will be a Nikon mount coming according to Eric.

To my knowledge there isn't anything faster at that focal length, in a Canon mount, prime or zoom, that is faster than the Tokina.
But I'm sure someone will let us know if there is.

There is the Canon 10-22. A nice lens, but slower yet @ F3.5-4.5 .

In that case... I suppose the 2.8L Canon Zooms have to be quite good... I'd probably get three 1.4L primes with their widest which I think is the 24mm and get their 50mm and 85mm, then get three f2.8 zooms including the Tokina 11-16mm and the 16-35 plus the 24-70 or 24-105 whichever is better... and use the zooms most the time other than for low light.. right?

How does the Tokina mix in with the L zooms?

Where can we find the user manual? I'm trying to figure out what the other ports do on the mount. The bottom port bumps into the 15mm support I have (long valley)
