  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Tap, tap. tap... is this thing on?

Any news...? :waaa:

Apparently not.

I plan on upgrading to EPIC when available so unless the Birger mount will work with EPIC, it has a very limited life span. Therefore the longer it takes to get it the less it's worth to me.

I'm seriously thinking about just canceling the Birger mount and going the Nikon/Zeiss way and getting my camera out there.

I already have Canon lenses and believed in what Erik was doing as adding functionality and therefore value to my camera. I ordered over 16 months ago. And I paid in full over 6 months ago and shipping was always just around the corner. Sure there are some great things that are in the works as a result of waiting those six months, but until I have the mount on my camera it's just a concept and not a reality.

I can't get both, there just isn't the money for it.

I have to say that the longer the Birger mount is delayed the less I want it, or need it. I thought everything was moving forward? What is the delay about now?

The way the Birger is built there's no doubt in my mind it'll adapt to EPIC by screwing into an intermediary mounting plate. EPIC is already being designed to accept Canon lenses so we know the focal plane distance won't be a problem.

If EPIC's Canon mount won't take the VF FF then it's DOA as an option as far as I'm concerned. Personally, I think RED should just buy or license Erik's stuff. It's very close to done at this point.

I just emailed with Erik yesterday so I believe he's on the job and mounts are in the process of going out. Hang tight another week is my advice.

I just got off the phone with Erik. He is currently building the next batch of Lemo cables (the last stage of the batch assembly), and suggested that the batch will be complete and shipped out before the weekend.

He said they had a slight delay in their last software release because of a glitch that was causing the RED to disable power out the GPIO connection, and this set him back a couple of days.

I will continue to harass Erik as necessary, and post the results of our chats.

Thanks Kyle. That helps.

This is the kind of stuff that just happens. Which is fine and to be expected.
It's part of the process.

What makes it so difficult, at least psychologically, is no one communicating what is going on. We get word that "they're shipping" and then nothing. No mounts and no word on why.
I can live with delays as long as I understand why, but it is very difficult to deal with expectations being constantly raised and then another disappearing act follows.

Eric, I'm not being disrespectful. I applaud your dedication to making this thing the best it can be. And I admire your sticking with this even though you have run into all sorts of unexpected things yourself.
But please respect our legitimate need to know how to plan. We are trying to run businesses as well.
I truly believe that this will be worth the wait but we are getting weary of being in the dark all the time.

Thanks for listening,

Greg

Has anyone actually succeeded in getting a refund out of Birger. I asked for one in December, then got the usual apology in January and was told I would have it within 30 days, yada, yada, yada. Still no mount, no refund. I can accept engineering delays and manufacturing delays, but why should I have to wait so long for a simple refund? I would have figured that the credit card machine would be one piece of technology that they would have had sorted out by now.

Here is an update why Erik ran into a delay. I had a problem with a few Canon lens on the mount and was loosing communication with the mount. I could get it back with a remount of the lens. But that was not dependable then nothing not even a remount would help. I was in communication with Erik through this entire test with excellent help to keep me testing. Part of the problem I also have is being an engineer who also always wants it perfect.

So over the last week I took two trips to Boston to go over this with Erik. Well the first trip we thought it was fixed and I will not go into that at all to protect the innocent and I do not mean Erik or me.

Then back in Rhode Island and yes I loose a day each trip during a very busy time with three deadlines. The mount went out on me in the first half hour. So Erik was right there to help and after 6 more test it was determined I had to go back.

So while most of you were enjoying Sunday (first great weather day in months in New England) we were in Birger studio testing lens mounts, lens and Erik rewriting software. After multiple test and yes a few laughs Erik found the problem in the software and fixed the problem. We tested 10 different Canon lens and all worked perfect when I left.

Today in Rhode Island I did a day of testing after meeting one of my deadlines yesterday. Mount was perfect but I am not so sure about the Red as a tool for me but that is a different story.

When I left Birger on Sunday Erik had a stack of 5-7 trays with built mounts next to his test station. Each tray had 16 mounts in the tray. The mounts are built and going out the door. And now with out a software bug.

Thanks for the details, Paul.

Gregory, I know exactly what you mean, and why I posted the short update after my phone call. I hope things continue to move forward until Erik gets caught up. I'm in the "shit, or get off the pot" stage, so I'm trying to keep in touch with Erik regularly until my mount arrives. I'll continue to post updates from any future conversations I have with Erik until I get my mount or I get tired of waiting and cancel my order.

I was fully prepared to cancel today, pending the outcome of the phone call, but Erik assured me it would ship before the weekend, and I'm still waiting for my RED to come back from the Upgrade, so I can wait a few more days.

Great news Paul. Thanks for working with Erik and updating us here.

Can't wait to see if the 85mm 1.8 is working. It's a cool little lens. I'm really crossing my fingers on the Tokina 11-16 and Sigma 50mm 1.4. That Sigma is nice... just don't know what it takes to make every lens work. Seems many have their own idiosyncrasies.

Erik, please hire Paul as your PR manager.

A few have succeeded. I was in a similar boat as you but have since got back in line. I do have a dumb mount, though, which takes the edge off.

With or without the Impero????, that..... is the question!

I expect quite a few of us are waiting for the full working package....

I can't answer that question (though perhaps Paul can), but my guess is, there were none at Birger (unless they were proto/demos). Curt is busy retooling for the new antenna mount, which Erik admitted he was very happy with the results. Erik suggested that my Impero would probably ship within another few weeks. I'll reserve my speculation as to the definition of "a few weeks".

I second the statement. No more no less. I know Paolo (Tinari) too and many others as well.

Hey Emanuel,
i dont know about that. I'm ok to receive the mount first and then the impero if only the upgrade on the mount is not needed anymore, so no shipping back to birger, as stated by him in his 02/02 email "When we know what date your Impero will be available, we will email you to send your existing mount back for an upgrade to the latest and greatest"
