Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I also got the Fedex tracking number and the package is also shipped this time. As all sorts of things have happend I just hope what I'll receive is not a mock up. :-)

Ive been off this thread for a while, so it's nice to hear things are moving here.

I only have the old mount but I think people will be pleased. I refrained from commenting on it while Erik was having the production issues but my impression of it :

Very well built, solid and rugged. It's hard to comment on performance as the power of this thing wont come into play until it ships with the impero's. Until then its basically a dumb mount.

I dont know if the design is the same, but one issue I found with the mount is when using the buttons on the side we kept pushing the wrong ones while filming. So you may just want to open the iris up half a stop but we hit 'focus callibration' instead (remember most of the time you're pushing these whilst looking through the viewfinder, so it's easy to do as they are all identical buttons) and then your lens recalibrates and you lose your focus. Its wasnt a ballbreaker - with the remote knob issues like this should be gone completely.

I used mine for one short film and was incredibly pleased with the result. I'm waiting on a new mount because I had a few control issues with one of my lenses and I could not hit accurate collimation. Apart from that it's a very solid piece of kit which performed very well with the following lenses for my short :

Canon 35mm 1.4 L
canon 24mm 1.4 L
Canon 17-55mm 2.8
Canon 50mm 1.2 L

images were fantastic, and I cant wait to get the new mount with controller. Should be great.

Finally, we had no FF and did the whole focus pulling manually with the L lenses. I was very suprised that most of them had a very decent focus draw (close to 180 degrees on some lenses) and after a few attempts we managed to pull focus by hand and hit our mark most of the time (unless we were wide open!). So those shooting without a FF or controller should be aware it's not easy, but doable. Far easier than I thought it would be after all the people that scoffed at using SLR lenses on Red. I would certainly reccomend the L series lenses for this, the focus draw on non-L leanes seems to be smaller and therefore harder to do manually (again the impero I think negates this)

If you're worried about the lenses breathing I wouldnt be too concerned. The L series primes are barely noticable.

Im glad I got my mount in Oct last year to enable me to shoot something, but its understandable and right that Erik held off and fixed the issues he needed to. Mine will have to go back as soon as I get word from Erik, and I cant wait for the controller, it will make the product a different beast entirely.

Birger Mount Elvis is in Memphis

Birger Mount Elvis is in Memphis

Frazier! For real??? I'm as excited as you are! I believe I believe I believe...

where's my damn pixie dust!

For Real..My Birger smart mount, Elvis is now in Memphis. according to FEDEX it won't be here till Wed. before noon but here in the Keys it's usually late afternoon before delivery. Yes, I am excited as if you couldn't tell.

Will give a full report when I have it in my hands. Hope to install the mount on Thursday as FEDEX won't get here till late on Wed. I'm sure. Erik said that he may include a signed copy of the agreement for us in the package if approved for the install. We must have a copy of the agreement before we can install the mount on the cameras. Without it our warranty and upgrade path is void if we install the mount.

BTW Paul, since you're Tokyo-based, have you done any work for "Dentsu"? I used to work for them 2002-2006.
Yes, as a matter of fact some of our biggest jobs have been with them!

As for the EF 100/2 lens, I picked it up second hand in perfect condition for 30,000 yen. Given the resulting images on both my Red camera and my regular Canon 40D I'm very happy with my purchase....

For those interested, what you see above is the same field of view you will get on your Red One camera using the Birger mount with this lens, as both sensors are approximately the same size (Super35 and APS-C). In fact, the salad dressing shot will be replicated on Red next Monday using the exact same lens.

Birger mount delivered

Birger mount delivered

Happy to say that FEDEX delivered my mount and that I have it in my hands. Beautifully machined and I can't wait to get it installed.

My approval letter was enclosed in the package. And tool kit and cables.

Thank you so much Erik, I will post some images tomorrow from various lenses. Lauri, it's really here.

Best,
Frazier Nivens, Ocean Imaging

Nice, Frazier. Do me a favor and head inland and get some video of some bikini hotties on a nice warm beach somewhere and post it as "test footage". It's what my doctor here in snowy, dreary, smoggy Salt Lake City prescribed for my cold.

Footage coming soon...

Footage coming soon...

Your wish is my command..

Thought you'd all like to see that Erik has delivered and the mounts are going out the door.

Best to all,
Frazier

I will post some footage as soon as I can get it installed this afternoon. Probably not today..

:usd: :w00t: The fat lady is singing!!! And it sounds great!

NOW, I'm getting impatient!

Paul, I know Dentsu is big.... but does: Rika, Tomohiro or Natsuo mean anything to you?

cheers all
Jesper

Paul, I know Dentsu is big.... but does: Rika, Tomohiro or Natsuo mean anything to you?
Sorry, no, but like you say, it's a BIG company!

Great to see that the second wave of mounts has gone out. I guess it won't be long now before my mount gets the call to head back home for its upgrade....

Cheers,

Paul

Fedex lost the package that was inbound from ViewFactor, containing an Impero.:ranting2:

Curt is sending me a new shipment of three Imperos for arrival tomorrow. Curt also just received two brand new mounts today, to replace the early mounts he was using for develpment. So, fedex is batting .500...

Happy to say that FEDEX delivered my mount and that I have it in my hands.

Congrats Frazier and Erik! Get it on there and have some fun. Looks like the beginning of a lot of happy endings.

@ERIK - when Curt shipped me back my Birger via Fedex it got stuck on a plane in LA (where I was driving the next day). It took Fedex 2 more days to deliver to me. After that they messed up another shipment to me that cost a week. I don't know what's going on at FedEx right now but the Post Office has never screwed up Priority mail for me over the years.

I'm not sure I trust FedEx anymore.

Birger Mount Installed and Working Just Fine

Birger Mount Installed and Working Just Fine

Birger mount is now installed and working great on my camera. Tested a bunch of different lenses this afternoon and tomorrow will have more time to shoot more and post some frame grabs.

Install went well with no problems.

Best to all,
Frazier

Great to hear, Frazier. I trust (hope?) that Erik got my addendum and mine is somewhere in the current batch...

As much as I want to see test footage... You got to ask yourself, "Would you rather see pictures of naked girls, or be in the room /taking/ pictures of naked girls?"

I wish I could share the wave of euphoria sweeping this thread. With the mount paid for back in Oct. (not as far back as some of you of course), agreement faxed... all email requests for information are now not returned, phone calls go to a recorded message. I have no clue now if Birger got the fax... what email address they have for FedEx tracking. So now that I have spoken out... I fully expect my order to move much lower in the pile. Hope not. Right now 50 students just look at this new RED setting there. Not a good thing.

I don't understand, Robert. You mean you can't put a Nikon lens on that new RED just sitting there?

I had the same thought as Douglas. We had been shooting with a Nikon lenses for many months before our Birger arrived and actually still find ourselves shooting with Nikon lenses a good deal of the time even with the Birger installed.

My guess is, education budgets are limited, $500 is $500... And, given that it was supposed to have shipped forever-ago, I feel Bob's frustration. Also, they just got their RED about 2 weeks ago.

Knowing Bob personally, he really does have a bunch of students looking over his shoulder at a full RED package, and a collection of Canon glass, but no mount to bring the two together. My understanding is that their RED was donated, if that help you understand his situation and budget constraints.

We would be happy to loan Robert our Nikon mount until his Birger arrives if that would be of help. I'm with a very small Museum and we truly understand budget constraints. We waited a year for our Birger mount and feel it was worth every minute of the wait.

David
