  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I don't recall there ever being a focus read out in the spec. I'm not sure if you can even get that info out of a canon lens.

Look at the screencap from the mac app in my post from yesterday... distance information is available in many lenses. There is a plan for lens information display, and it neither involves changes to the Impero, or additional delay in shipping the mounts.

I stand corrected. This makes the birger even better.

Erik.. ure a fucking genius man.. i just looked at that jibberish pdf you put up with those strings and variables... i have no idea what was going on but it seemed pretty deep. nice.. real nice. it looks so sophisticated.. Will Curt be able to diggitt?

If you have received a shipping notice, we are working hard to get your mount out in the next few days.

Please clarify this Erik. Are you referring to those who have received your email Sept. 30 saying "Those of you that have already received shipping notices and have paid for the first shipment, have either received your mount, or will receive an email FedEx tracking number in the coming few days."

or, are you referring to those who have actually received tracking numbers from FedEx that have not yet been picked up by FedEx?

I'm in the former group so I'm guessing December, but some clarity would be much appreciated.

do you think red will have a wireless knob solution though kyle... plus they'd be already too busy with all those cameras man. accessories.. so much R&D

Yes, actually. The DSMC Remote module is wireless, and with RED's AF lenses, it would not surprise me if this is incorporated in somehow. In any case, as I see it, this isn't about RED making a wireless solution-- rather anyone (read ViewFactor, Andy, etc) making a wireless solution that is compatible with a broad range of lenses (PL, Nikon, Canon, Leica, etc).

Again, I want my Birger... I really do. But if it is going to take another 6 months before I get a complete Birger solution, which will be worthless to me (personally) 6 months after that, when Epic's start rolling off the line, then its becomes a bad investment. If I can get a complete solution in the next 2 months, then the investment will wash, which I can live with.

So, its up to Eric. Hence my original point of discourse: I need a firm, reasonable deadline from Eric as to when the mount and the knob will be finished and delivered, or else I have no other choice but to cancel my order.

Teach me to post before catching up on the thread!

This is indeed great news Erik. We are on track to rebuild what has been lost. However, I still feel like I need some kind of concrete commitment that I can expect to receive my mount by (I'll give you a little headroom), December 15th. Not just shipped, but delivered and on my doorstep by the 15th.

I dig it :) I'll probably have something similar available for our receiver in a couple months so people will be able to do similar things with our setup in terms of playing nice with other devices.

Same here.

I already asked about delivery in an email to Birger before this announcement and also in this thread .

Got the silent treatment as usual, which keeps the doubt in my mind that this will actually happen in a reasonable timeframe and with responsible communication from Birger.

As good as the mount may turn out to be... I'm on the fence about cancelling.

so does that mean that it will be a couple of months till we get our knobs?
and then another month of installing the software into hardware and ramping up for shipment.

a couple of months sounds like 3 months... so i guess 4-5 months sounds like a realistic estimate on when we could get our months. Maybe even 6-7 months should there be complications.

Yeah, I'm not sure putting two engineering geniuses together is actually going to speed things up. They'll just keep bouncing new ideas back and forth and never feel that the current design is good enough to actually go into production. :help:

Thanks for the answer about the lens information display, Erik. Sounds like you can't/don't want to say more about it right now, which makes me hope for an elegant solution.

I think he meant for a software development guide for third parties, not that it would take that long to make the internal changes.

Curt has the Impero working with the mount. I am supposed to get my Impero on friday, with the beta of the Birger/Impero software in it already. Debug of any of the wireless issues that might arise, can start at that time. No need to wait for the repackaged radio that will fit inside the Impero, as we can use the existing Red Camera Adapter, with a few wires over to the Impero.

Ken fixed one last detail in the mac software last night, and I will get that out later today.

The collimation problem perplexed us for some time, but we now completely understand it. On the front of the camera, at a diameter of 96mm ther is a lip of 0.25mm. This was not in any of the drawings. It is the edge of the painted surface of the camera. Within this 96mm circle, paint has been mechanically removed. Our mount is 100mm in diameter, which corresponds to the diameter of the front of the camera. See attached pictures. This only a problem when we are at the outside range of our tolerances, and RED is at the outside range of theirs (but in both cases still within specified limits). As it turns out both companies seem to understand their tolerances remarkably well, I just didn't understand that the paint was contributing to the problem until very recently.

We will get caught up on our emails today and tomorrow. It won't be until tomorrow when I get my Impero that I will have the last of the details for everybody on how these changes effect things.

The Impero decision drastically effects the schedule for getting our customers up to full functionality in a very positive way.

The Birger mount should be seen as one of the upgrade possibilities of the Red One. It's not just about sensors. The ability to use different lenses, wireless control, etc. are also very important upgrade possibilities. Third party accessories like this mount or what ET or Doug Underdahl are doing are vital to making the Red One stay at the top of its game and expand it's usability. Sure, the new Red DSMC designs look awesome, but right now I'm more interested in what I can use today with my Red One. Come on Erik and Curt, make this happen, you have our full support (and my money, incidentally :)).

Hi Erik

Thanks very much for the update!

Does this mean that on some cameras at the outside of RED's tolerances and some of your mounts, there may be a need to remove that lip of paint on the camera ourselves, or are you just checking all your mounts yet to be shipped will take account of that 0.25mm within your own tolerances? 0.25mm seems quite a lot to absorb.

Thank you for the update Erik. It's always good to hear what's going on over there.
