Birger Lens Mount Reservations

So if I buy the Nikon mount, and the next day Erik ships a thousand mounts, knobs and bluetooth remotes, you can all thank me.

A few mounts ... maybe (never 1000 !).
Knobs and bluetooth remotes ... wow ... those WILL be a while.

If you are going Nikon mount, get the Doug mod done too ... at least you will have a manual backup and DX lens aperture control if you need one of those types of lenses.

I do pity the folk that are waiting for the Birger smart Nikon mount ... it's taken this long for something that is Birger's home territory (Canon) ;-(

Sigh...

Déjà vu deluxe...

Get a Nikon mount and sell it when your Birger arrives.

Well, I say "déjà vu" to your "déjà vu." This entire thread is just one big déjà vu!

Regardless of my doubts about getting the Nikon mount, I would have gotten it long ago if I had any pressing projects that needed it. I'm getting the Birger for personal use. In the meantime, I've had enough rentals to keep me busy.

Today I'm either going to a) get an email from Birger saying my mount is in the next batch, or b) call up RED and order a Nikon mount.

I can't wait any longer; I'm sick of passing up projects; and I can't believe I've pissed almost half of my warranty away without shooting a single frame of footage. I look back at posts like these...

...and I just kick myself for not having moved on sooner. It's friggin' September, for frak's sake.

So if I buy the Nikon mount, and the next day Erik ships a thousand mounts, knobs and bluetooth remotes, you can all thank me.

When I see all those posts together, I'm almost convinced that Erik is just a figment of our collective imaginations. It's unreal.

I know people claim to have seen him at the reduser party, but did anyone actually touch him? Was he tangible?

Isn't repeating an action but expecting a different result the definition of insanity? or at least futility?

I kinda skipped over all the Nikon mount discussions... can you explain this to me? Is it something RED does for an extra fee, or would I have to ship the mount to Doug?

Prognosis: Soon some more angry comments, then a sheep will be slaughtered, Aqua will join in to calm the waves, and then Erik will explain that a little GlibGlabKnob was broken and thus a slight delay happened with the shipping.

Or maybe the first mounts turn up.

Just maybe...

Thank you sir. I probably won't get the upgrade, since none of my Nikkor lenses are DX, but it's good to know about.

In years to come this thread will be studied minutely by scientists.
They will marvel at it's length, be aghast at it's unpredictable behavior, and finally after many years of scrutiny be able to answer the one true question:
"when was the Birger mount shipped?"

poor akube, you can shoot a hundred features and you slaughter a sheep for eidh ONE TIME.....

Maybe Mythbusters should be called in..

Absolutely terrific post, Ed. . .

However, as an academic, and having myself been very (and repeatedly) disappointed with Birger's AND View Factor's delays, I suspect that what is really going to happen is this: At a sparsely-attended research colloquia in some exotic locale (most probably Orlando), the scientific team will present the results of their exquisite analysis of what will no doubt be billed as "the world's longest forum thread." The presenters and the few attendees will debate the meaning of the entries, the changing tone of the discussion, and the lemming-like faith of what will be termed "the faithful." Finally, as the presentation ends, a small voice will be heard from an innocent graduate student sitting in the back of the conference room: "Geez. . . all that. . . and to think that they never shipped."

i think aqua is going to start a birger time share like those redvolution guys. Only $8000 a year buys you access to aqua's birger...

hey wait a minute... jarred has a working birger... maybe that's why akube went over there....

Martin, you have an interesting diet going on.

(I like bacon and maple syrup.)

Guys, you bought a product that did not exist. If you expect to have it in hand, buy something off the shelf. It is in Erik's best interest to get this out as fast as possible. That's what he is doing. Bad communication at times, sure. But it's not his fault if you had plans for a mount that does not yet exist.

The product did exist when we all placed our orders, although not in a Red One compatable format. Putting the PL mount and warranty issue aside, I’m just not sure why it’s taken so long to port the technology over. He should have just charged everyone’s card at the beginning and then hired the people to get the job done.

The open approach Red adopted works great if you are pushing the boundaries of whats possible. Customers for the most part understand any delays. However, it’s infuriating when you have delays on products like RR mattebox which is just a redesign (for a great price) of a product that’s been around for ages and Birger had this Canon interface before Red even came along.

If it were so easy there would be lots of other options that are just as viable at the same price point. There aren't.
