  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I'm sure for extra grand* Erik will install it for You... Hell - if he doesn't - I will... :)

* Conditions apply. Doesn't include travel, accommodation, food and entertainment for the technician. If he blows Your Red One You are out of luck. We could however offer a free recycling disposal of the camera's body for additional grand...

are you kidding?.. an extra grand??.. :)

Insane. Duclos charges US $90/hour.

It should be noted that all 29 photographs were taken in under 7 minutes.

So, this should be circa US $10. An installation service should be included.

Well, except that it would be more than 7 minutes.

Someone would first need to receive your camera, counter-check it with your order number, Make sure it doesn't get mixed up. Unwrap it, label it, prep it. Then do the 7 minute conversion. Test it. Wrap it up. Wrap it up again. Pack it. Fill out the paperwork for the shipping. He'd also have to include for some insurance, because things do go wrong.

Erik had already more than enough hassle with this mount, so we should respect his decision to not offer an install service. He does not want to, and Birger is probably also not equipped to handle that kind of workload (my guess.)

One solution might be that the Birger Mount gets sold via the Red store - much like the Nikon mount now, with optional install prior to shipping the camera. But again: that is at the sole descretion of Birger and Red.

So... anyone receive notice of their mounts shipping?

No matter who. Someone should provide it. Birger must recommend where we can get the service. Otherwise, they will be losing customers. Myself included.

From the looks of it, the Birger mount isn't much harder to swap than the Nikon mount. And that one has been in (swapping) use for a couple of months now.

I would also imagine that very soon someone will post a video of the actual procedure, making things even clearer/easier. Equipped with that, you should be able to find a local technician who could do the procedure for you.

Norwegians are rational people. You hit the three major issues.

This is exactly the right sort of person to do this. Your neighborhood shop can give you a much better value than we can. The fedex charges alone would cover the cost of local service multiple times over.

Given the way this stands, 90%+ of our reservation holders have expressed that they can live with the situation. We will continue to look at how we can best service our customers going forward. But for now, so long as I have a backlog of customers that want to install their own mounts, I am happy with the way it stands. Once we have cleared the backlog, I will be happy to think through the policy again.

This community, REDuser, is (IMHO) a much more capable and credible source of referrals for trustworthy camera technicians, than I am. Anybody want to offer up your services, or recomend the services of others, to those that express needing help?

Seems to me, not every Red user is an engineer or would like to be.

let me guess.. the 10% unhappy w/ birger installation policy?..

If You are truly in a middle of Africa filming with the Red One and don't have basic technical skills to do this, or have a technician in the crew - You are asking for troubles anyway... No offense...

I did projects in both Angola and Namibia - and I don't remember a day without having to fix some little things (ala Mac Giver)... :)
