  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

nope nothing... in the dark over here :(

keeping busy though..

I just got off the phone with Erik and he asked me to post what he said:

He said they had a production issue involving another branch of their business (I believe he said "bigger") that they had to give all their attention to. He said that it has nothing to do with the Birger mount and that their is no reason to be alarmed. He said that the mount will ship either today or tomorrow.

I know it sounds strange. I'm just the messenger. Please, don't shoot.

Hrm. Erik said on 7/16 at 4:43 PM EDT, "The package is not going to be ready for fedex until morning." So, this other issue came up between late afternoon on one day and morning of the next day? That seems like a pretty small window to have such a big wrench thrown into it -- not to mix metaphors. Someone got some 'splaining to do! :detective2:

Harmonica, thanks for following up the phone conversation with a post.

I should have given a quick update to the board. We have a single red mount here, and will ship the second one to red for qualification.

We have simply had some challenges this week with production for a very large customer, and a machine that has been on the fritz. Six employee companies can be very nimble at times, unfortunately this past week hasn't been one of those nimble weeks.

The machine that needs to be working to get the prototype out to RED, is the same machine that is needed to get 50 production units of something else to two other customers. I, knock on wood, think I have things up and running.

Unfortunately I am the guy in the middle of this, a few hours to fix a machine, and a few hours to test a prototype... hopefully we'll get that box out to red today or tomorrow.

This public development is a pain in the ass at times, as the embarrassing little shit that goes wrong becomes public. I could have emailed our customers directly, but lately it seems any private communication is posted here anyway.

We are working on it. I haven't read any of the posts. I thank all that have expressed faith as we wrap this up, and look forward to showing any that may have lost faith that all was under control and worth waiting a few extra days for.

thanks for the update erik... If you wanna keep this off the boards, may I suggest you keep us in the loop then? This is the first RED has heard of these problems you are having...

Well.... thanks Jarred for staying with us through the dark days. Thanks Erik for shedding some much needed light. I wish you godspeed. I'm here to help.

My prediction for Friday of next week.

10 AM: I have a hang over from all the champaign I consumed at the "Birger is certified celebration party" I threw myself the night before.

5 PM: Jarred has narrowly escaped a diabetic coma from all the chocolate he has eaten.

Prove it! I haven't been able to find anything (other than Jim's post).

RED said ET was working on a smart Canon Mount and I called Element Technica on the phone and they said they were working on it. Thats all I know.

I'm definitely very close to canceling my Birger reservation based on how crazy this entire scenario has gotten.

You're welcome. Glad to have you back. Please do read the previous posts. I'm not as laid back on the forum as I am on the phone, but I mean well. :)
(I still think it'd be great if you sold to ET :whistling: )

And I'm here for some constructive criticism.

Very good to have confirmation of a "plan b". Thanks. I was very close to cancelling my reservation, but I'm back to following the pied piper that is Erik. We'll see how long I last this round. :)

I plan to keep my Birger reservation.

But if ET's mount is IMS compatible, I will get it, because that would be the best solution BY FAR.

Your machines seem to go wonky pretty often. Who's the manufacturer of those machines? If I ever start a manufacturing business I'd like to avoid that brand.

Got my RED nikon mount from Dan today just like he said. I'm going to install it now. awesome!

Not going to read posts until tomorrow.

Admittedly, I was just trying to keep my head down until I solved the problem with the machine. I think the bigger problem was not that Essemtec makes bad machines, but that the guy who had it before me did a really crappy job of calibrating it, and maintaining it. It seems we never really found the source of the original problems, until this week.

A loose power cable to the feeders, wasn't letting enough power get to them, and when one shorted out it took out a feeder base. It wasn't until the second feeder bas blew that we found the loose connection.

The calibration had to be redone, because when we bought a replacement feeder base, we also bought an extra base so we can load even more components. Had to move a limit switch to add the extra base in a different location than the one that blew out. When I tried to remove the circuit board from the blown base, as I had a replacement, I stripped a couple of screw heads...

It's like working on a classic car, without any of the joy. They didn't really design the software to make it easy to do the calibration without bringing in a tech. The newer models are probably easier to work with, but with where the dollar had slid as of last fall, it seemed like it was a good idea to buy a 5 year old used mahine with only 600 hours on it, for 1/3 of the price of a new one.

I feel like I am in a soap opera. I wanted to wait to announce this delay until it was fixed. I fixed it about five minutes before I started writing this. Production will be up and running again in the morning.
