  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Paul:

I don't think a final line has been drawn, Jim has been working night and day on build 16 and Erik has made electronic and power source changes so that may be sufficient as I think Jim has said elsewhere he hasn't ruled out the possibility of certifying other physical configurations.

Does this mean a change to make it sit in front of the adjustable back focus?

I am glad the final line has been drawn in the sand (although it has been pretty clear for along time now).

Weird #1 post... why would it make you glad, that the birgermount is encountering further design obstacles?

i hate to slightly agree with paul, but either way the issue will be resolved once and for all...

Logically, Aqua's position makes sense to me. I haven't seen anything that indicates taking the whole pl mount off is any riskier than doing the Nikon style mount replacement now. The i/data cable can get pinched either way. And we could cut the i/data cable as part of the installation to remove the issue altogether.

IF something else caused the camera to blow up then that thing is another issue altogether and the final unit will be certified by RED anyways.

If Birger has to figure out a way to do this without removing the mount his whole backfocus system, his backfocus software and interchangeable mount system all get tossed out the window. Plus he'll need a board redesign and possibly move all the electronics into an outboard box. Yeah, that'll ship in 3 weeks.

Personally, I think RED should allow the mount to be removed but not warranty damage done during the installation. They clearly don't like that idea for some reason they have yet to articulate well. There may be a very good reason.

As I have said before, we are trying to work this out... with our customers best interests in mind.

This email will not stop our efforts to work with Birger.

Jim, I reread my email to our common customers from last week, and I must say am disappointed with some of my choices. I could have communicated what I needed to without being disrespectful to you or your company. I thank you for stating publicly that you are comitted to working with my company despite the lack of respect that I showed you. You did not ask for an apology, but I feel, rightfully deserve one. I am truly sorry.

You're a good man, Erik.

I'm fresh out of patience, but the store should have it in stock "next week" or so. :bleh:

Until then just replace it with a dash of cynasism...

I'm not too hopeful. From what I can read into it, Erik is calling it "done" except for a bit of testing and the warranty issue which Red needs to resolve, and Red is basically saying "it will be done when Erik works out a way to modify the mount to fit their warranty policy as others are doing."

Erik, I know the back focus mechanism and software you worked out are cool and a great way to go, but from what I can see it may be time to start working on plan B--changing the mount to not require the removal of Red's back focus ring. Others seem to be doing it, and I'd hate to see you trying to play catch up when others start shipping.

After all, what we are all dying for is your motor control software and don't really care how it connects to the camera as long as it works--and it seems that others are making it work.

We are all anxious for you to put this behind you and get on to the fun stuff--breathing compensation, and 3D autofocus!!!

Still pulling for you,

Thom

I just came in from cementing some caps on PVC flotation tubes for a dolphin shoot. The back of the can said this: "Long term repeated overexposure to solvents may cause damage to the brain..."

..............So please disregard everything I've said on this forum.

Who owns the screenplay rights to this thread? I just started reading it on Monday, starting around page 30 and I just finished. I could hardly put it down... Whew.

'tis a nail-biter!:spidy:

Maybe we should pitch a reality webcast show of the whole RED saga to Nehst Studios. Just send them a link to reduser.net's top read threads with a brief note- "So, what d'ya think? Do we have a deal?"

Birger has a lot of experience exactly in the field that is required to build electronic mount with remote control.
Especially the possibility to compensate for still lenses problems via electronic compensation is the killer. It turns your $800 lenses in to $20,000 one.

Engineers are known to have bad communication skills and if you want to get in to the bad relationship with your clients let your engineers to talk to them.
Result guarantied.

ET has good set of products, but it may take long time before we will see something near the functionality of Birger mount. Plus Birger mount is already there, we just had bad luck with first 3 of them. Too bad that he didn’t send the first one to me for testing.

your a big man Erik,
It shows character to clear the air like that!

No room for foolish pride in this endeavor...
