  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Then I must not comment on this issue anymore.... sorry guys.

I'm sure he was a little frustrated and wanted to let people know he could ship something for those who didn't want to wait for a redesign. Hopefully you can find a way to cut him a little slack. I think we all want you guys to get along and work things out.

If you do not wish to wait for the warranty issues to be resolved, please let Amy (asb@birger.com ) know and we can start shipping in a few days.

Whoa... I just re-read that email and think it has to be taken in it's proper context. I believe he gave people the option to take delivery of the mount knowing the consequences of a voided warranty.

I highly doubt his intent was to do a full product roll out in spite of a warranty decision by RED. He did state he was waiting on a decision from RED.

I just hate to see more misunderstandings in this situation.

What a hazardous move by Erik. I supported him and he has my money, but when I saw this email come in last week I knew it was trouble. I assumed RED was aware of this but it looks like they were not.

I am just happy we have some more options now. I will always give Erik credit for giving us the dream, but I will also credit him for making some pretty bizarre business decisions.

Moral of the story. When playing poker with Jim Jannard and he has a big smile on his face, don't try to bluff.

It is obvious that there is some tension between Erik and Red, and as a RED customer, I think that that is a shame. Sure, it's good that there may be competition for Erik in the near future. (I'm sure Jim knows that in the same vain it will be good for us all if there is tough competition for RED in the near future) But Erik (like Red) sort of did some forging through unchartered waters, and, like RED deserves a little love. Would anyone else be trying it if they didn't see the intense desire for this product through the work that Erik is doing? I give him alot of credit, and I'll buy his product if it stands up.

Alex and Steve at Element Technica are truly great people and absolutely make gear of unquestionable quality – we will be outfitting our camera almost entirely with their goods.

But I have to weigh in here with Jay and some of the others: Erik has been the envisioner this entire Canon electronic control miracle from the get-go. We sent him our credit card number the first day he offered the mount and we will remain loyal to Birger and happily follow through on our purchase if at all possible – just like we hang-in there with RED and would be loyal to the ET guys if the tables were turned.

ET is, relatively speaking, a pretty small shop (they’re just down the street a bit) like, I suspect, Erik’s shop is small as well. I think it is a hugely inspiring part of this revolution we call RED when small companies of such high caliber become part of the fabric.

Things could be much worse.

Given this latest dramatic event in the unfolding drama with Jarrad storming out of the room... Coming in the next episode... Will Erik lay down his guns and make up? Is it too late for that? Find out next episode with days of our non birger.

Yes it is a bit of a drama. I actually prefer it to American Idol.

So Jarrad if it's ok? Can you tell us from a ground level, what has happened with Birger/ erik? What is the true problem? How can he improve on things?

Im not giving up and I dont expect you guys to either.... we just probably need to sit down again to sort things out. It is pretty clear we each left that meeting last week with 2 different outlooks, so its just not best to comment on it further till we work everything out.

So anyways.. how about those Yankees?

I think Erik only took this position because he anticipated a lot of pressure from Birger reservation holders who felt they had to have the mount, regardless of the design and warranty issues. I think he was trying to appease both sides and make everyone as "happy" as possible.

In the same email to reservation holders, he also said:

"We are waiting on RED to determine the warranty policy, as it applies to the removal and installation of the mounts. I am unable to comment on the delivery schedule, until we understand the implications of this policy."

To me, it did not seem like a Erik was taking a cavalier or wreckless approach. It seemed that he was trying to help res holders make an informed decision, for those who were in an absolute pinch or had an impending deadline for which they were counting on the Birger.

However, it probably would have been best for him to withhold ALL the mounts until the issues were resolved.

Just my 2 pesos.

We all made the mistake of "assuming"... I'm sure we can work this all out, but in the end, every accessory needs to be compatible with our camera, for our customer's sake. We do not take kindly to "we'll ship no matter what". Only because it is a potential problem for our customers. Think about this for just a second. When did we NOT do something in our customer's best interests? We work our asses off for our customers. Everything we do is for our customers. That is the ONLY way to stay in business.

Am I to understand that Birger has encouraged customers to take delivery of a product that voids the warranty?

I'm a bit dumbfounded...

Jim

Good for you Jim. I am surprised everyone here has already forgotten the fact that the first mount Birger shipped out caused $3000 worth of damage to Mike's camera, that YOU paid for to get fixed.

For Erik to even offer this mount to customers with the clear intentions of voiding the warranty is ridiculous. I would like to see what happens when 300 people show up on RED's door with broken Birger-equipped cameras.

I think this interpretation is already over the top. Erik rather explained carefully, he is waiting for the communication to be completed with RED and waiting for feedback. The last sentence rather meant, if you are desperate and can't wait until the situation is resolved, Birger can ship you a mount (implying, it's then completely on your own risk.)

We start to be all nuts.

My apologies if I have missed something here... and that may well be the case. But we fixed a camera at our cost $3000 from a Birger mount. I would strongly urge anyone considering taking this risk to reconsider until we have figured out how to solve this problem. RED is NOT going to repair any more cameras at N/C due to a Birger mount explosion. I thought we had a plan in place to solve this issue, but if customers are given the opportunity to take delivery "at their own peril".... I'm not for it.

Jim

And before anyone lashes out at Red, just imagine a situation where hordes of indie film come to a stop due to 3rd party mounts. Red would get the blame (not unlike the problems with some beta builds used on productions.)

So I truly understand Red's reservation.

We as customers should really help Erik by shutting more up. Some of the comments made over the past days did not exactly always help...

IMHO
