Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Jim Jannard is our hero.

Jim Jannard is our hero.

Without Jim we would all be stuck with VariCams, EX1s and HVX200s. Want to make your own blockbuster, or just make kick ass spots, Jim is your hero. Just give Jim, Jarred, all the fine hard working people at red and Erik at Birger a little time to work this out. Like Jarred said, "this is hurting our customers and that hurts me" I'm paraphrasing. But the point is that we, the people who had the faith in Red when Red was just a scam are Red's first priority. They want our cameras to work and not blow up, hey, so do we. I called Red headquarters today and they told me that they are having good talks with Birger. And that they are hopefull that everything will be worked out. Red knows we are depending on being able to swap mounts. That for many of us, raising the money to buy a Red One meant renting to PL mount customers to help make our camera payments while using still camera lenses on our own projects. Red knows that this camera is our very livelihood. Let's all relax a few days and let them work this all out. I trust Jarred when he said "everyone will all be happy soon."

07-04-2008 Erik says:
We have a saying here at Birger. If I can see it I can fix it. We saw it on Monday. We fixed it on Wednesday. This did not require a circuit change. We moved to the AUX12V on the back of the camera because it provides more power and both correctly sees and protects against this fault.

and then today Erik says:
Guys fixed the electrical issue while I was gone, but I still need to validate the fix.

sounds like Erik's on top of it.

If the Birger voids the warranty I'm out. RED is too finicky and new to void the warranty on.

So if I was Erik I'd be selling two versions.. the one's he's got right now for people who are desperate and another version that keeps the RED backfocus mount and warranty in place.

I am not thrilled at all to see Element running for the electronic canon mount. Don't get me wrong, I love Steven's products, but Erik has put his heart and soul into this ONE project. He's a wonderful man who has worked on his own with little or no support, and now he's fighting some amazing battles at the last minute.

I would urge everyone on this board to support Erik and his business venture. He has done his level best and deserves our support.

Sometimes it's about more than just money, it's about supporting one of our own. Element is a fine company, but they are selling numerous products and I am sure they will do well. They also have, and have had, the COMPLETE support of RED. That's nice.

Erik has not been so lucky, and he has suffered greatly being alone in his company for the most part. He's listened, done a buttload of developement, and had gone through nothing less than hell to get this thing to market. He has shown character and grace under fire, and should be rewarded for that.

Now before people jump on me, I am NOT saying RED is against him, or for anyone else. I cannot comment on these things since I am not inside. What I can say is that from what I have read on here, even RED admits they are now making more of a point to communicate more consistantly with 3rd party vendors, and while that will help those yet to come, it means some real issues for those working today.

As comsumers, we have the ability to make things right. We must demand that whatever needs to be done to get Birger Certified, is done. I do not want to see any company get certified and Birger get left on the sidelines. It would be nothing less than a poetic crime.

We're talking about the soul focus of a man for the last year or so. He's taken enormous risk and incredible work to make this happen.

Please, don't leave the guy when he's so close. We need people like him just as badly as he needs us.

Jay

For the record, I do not have a Birger mount on order. I had one, but had to cancel 2 months ago due to cash flow issues. But rest assurred, if I get one, it will be from Erik..

Yeah, I'm kinda with Jay.* Element's stuff is awesome, no doubt, but Erik has put so much time and money into developing his product, I would hate to see him shat upon in this final home stretch, due to poor communication and a late-breaking warranty concern.

Is this what Stockholm Syndrome is all about? :)

* Assuming the goddamn Birger mount is ready soon!

Well put Jay,

Erik has some of my money. He can take the rest of what he needs when he's ready. Which I hope is soon.

Considering that Erik invented the nikon mount (as aqua tells us) and the canon mount it really will be a shame if he doesn't get to capitalize on something. Let's give him some time. In his email July 2 he says:

If you do not wish to wait for the warranty issues to be resolved, please let Amy (asb@birger.com ) know and we can start shipping in a few days.

There you have it; He'll be shipping soon.

Testing out the knob at NAB was a defining moment for me. Erik has the goods. It would be months perhaps even a year or more before anyone could catch up.

For us Birger Nikon (smart) mount reservation holders, I guess the silver lining to this story is that we won't have to suffer through this present ordeal, as Erik now has clearly defined and strict parameters with which to work when he builds the other already announced mounts (Nikon, Sigma, 4/3rds, etc.)

This surprises me... if it's true.
