  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

you guys worry too much.. I'm sure erik is almost done his modifications, and as I mentioned earlier there are more options coming to market. Everyone will be happy soon.. 3rd parties need to start communicating with us better, and of course, there are a few things we could do better as well.

Everyone relax a little... you all should be used to delays by now :) heh heh heh.

Would be good to hear from Erik about the almost done his modifications ... I hope (very much) you are correct !
All are saying not to worry ... so I wont say my 0.02 cents (pence in my world). 8th is tomorrow, when Erik is back, so I hope we get an update soon.

EDIT : when you say 'almost done his modifications' ... are these so that only the front of the PL mount needs removing ? it's taken months to get to the current solution and do wonder how long this will be ...

I'm getting confused.

Jarred, are you saying that RED hasn't agreed to honor warranties on cameras shipped to Birger to have their mounts installed? And it sounds like we wouldn't void the entire warranty by installing the Birger mount ourselves -- just the warranty on components that might be damaged by said installation. Right?

Erik, are you still working on modifications to the mount hardware, or was the longer power cable the last big change? Should we wait for a detailed agreement from RED, or are you ready to start shipping mounts / receiving cameras?

Some solid answers to these questions would be appreciated.

Between View Factor's wireless delay. . . and Birger's. . . this is all very depressing/distressing.

I really needed a wireless solution for our film for our Actioncam. . . I was SURE that one of these two systems would come out in time.

I was sooooo wrong.

The new mount ring (ironic as it is in this thread) and the Black Anodized rods..

Okay ... those, each RED will be outfitted with the new Super Bad A$#@S PL Lock Mount Ring no Doubt, as far as the Anodized rods, I have the RED CARBON X, and they are as Bad A%#@S as it gets, so I'll be getting some more of those instead.

What is kinda of funny is that RED knows exactly the kind of Toys to make to get everyone crazy about them, then again ... with Jim coming from Oklay:matrix: and his crazy designs it is to be expected!:)

That is correct... We have not come to an official agreement yet. We had a good meeting last week and came up with a possible game plan, but I have not heard a single thing since then from anyone at Birger.

You guys seem to know more about this than me....

From what i have gathered is that once Birger do whatever mods they have to they then take it to red and red will do testing to make sure all is ok and on the basis of that they will make a more definite warranty decision.

But if you do any instal yourself and stuff something up, you are unlikely to get any coverage.

Jarrad wont be able to give a definite answer till he and team go over the testing.

If your mounts go to Birger for instal and it stuffs up you are in the same boat.

Jim has stated on another thread that it is directly related to the instal itself. This voids the warranty on the stuff up. It's really simple.

We are waiting for Eriks reply when he gets a great sudden insight by a much needed rest.

I think it would be fair to suggest that no one will get the answers they want for a couple of weeks until thorough testing has been done although Erik's explanation seems like the most likely and therefore yes, the cable will more than likely put us into the safe area. It is however likely that at least one cameras damage was due to the cable pinch and we need to be aware of that because that would void the warranty and cost you $3000 to fix.

We wait... If this worries you get a dumb mount and do the resell or have a back up. I'm getting the nikon and having the backup. As far as glass is concerned, resale value should remain high so buy a couple of nikons second hand to play with in the mean time like an 85mm and 24mm or whatever. You wont lose money and wont feel so much like you are waiting. Under no circumstances should you rely on this product or any unreleased product for a production until you have said product in hand and have tested it yourself or you will set yourself up for fail.

if someone wants to get proactive then we as concerned consumers need to compile a list of short, non sarcastic, non threatening and concise questions.
At the moment Erik has to wade through pages of crap in order to answer the questions and he doesn't have the time. He usually only answers questions on the same page or a couple back from when he comes on and we need those questions up for him and the rest needs to be vacant. So if we can agree on those questions (realizing that he needs questions he can actually answer) and then keep putting them up (like bart simpson's "are we there yet" (quite ironic really)) then he will get it.

Yes, but I've gotten different impressions about the warranty from post to post. I can't tell if RED is operating on the "Xbox model" -- i.e. if you open up the case, the warranty is automatically void, period, and they won't cover anything bad that happens, no matter what caused it -- or if the warranty would still cover problems on a Birger-equipped camera that weren't caused by the mount.

If the latter, I might be willing to take my chances, since the Birger mount now draws power from the rear port, which will purportedly prevent any of the surges that caused the initial problems. If the former, well... :bye2:  :help:

Frustrating... Why only now Red? You already know this project for years.

Jim just posted that nothing is set in stone at the moment. So we may still get our storybook ending... fingers crossed.

(currently we are going through the beginning of act 3 in the birger saga)

NOTE: Sorry I meant to say Jarred... My bad DJ

Where? I don't see any new posts from Jim.

If Birger would redesign the mount that fits to (18382)

Canon EF Mount P+S Technik Interchangeable Mount System

then we could simply swap on and off that Birger EF from IMS on RED.

Then life could go easy between PL and Birger EF,

(also don't forget the rest of IMS adapter mounts).

No need of screws any more, etc...

I'm still thinking about the solution that could be the best for all of us.

It's about to meet the four worlds: RED, P+S Technik, Birger and RED users together.

You are correct, this is the story-book solution. And I have sent an E-mail to P+S requesting this very thing.. The answer was "We'll look into it".

My guess is that if they fail to get Birger on board, they will be looking at up to 50% fewer sales.. Lord knows I won't look at them twice.

But.. WITH Birger... I'd order tomorrow.

Sanjin,

I'm with you 100%. Always have been.

I spoke with the higher ups at P+S and they seemed to think it was entirely possible (if not probable) that the Birger would work with their system.

However, Erik seemed to think it would not work because of space requirements on his end.

I do not know if Birger and P+S have spoken directly. If they haven't, it's a shame. They could either say, "NO, it's definately not going to work", Then we move on and accept things the way they are. Or they say, "YES, it will work for certain!", and then I put my order in for the IMS, as many others would.

Anyway, I want this to happen.
