  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Sorry, ignorant post to follow:

Is the Birger mount officially shipping and how long from payment to shipment?

Must have a pair. Thanks.

Thanks Aqua. Can you give us any other details or initial impressions? I hope not all your footage has been "crappy." :) How do the Canon lenses compare to others in your arsenal? What was the collimation process like? Do you like the mount's operation so far?

Could not agree more ... c'on folks, those of you with the mount, can we have some comments PLEASE ?!?!?

What's with the 'power issue' ... is this add-hoc or do you all the issue (& how are you getting around it) ? or is it essentially a dumb mount and you have no control on aperture until this is fixed ? are you using an external power feed ?
What's it like to fix the mount on the RED camera body & collimation process ?
How does one use the PC software ?
Etc ... etc ...

... or do we have to wait for 200k visits to this thread before all is known and the Canon mount starts shipping in volume :glare:

David:

The mount worked fine when I had it and I did just a couple of test shots and installed build 16 before I shipped it out to my nephew to shoot a short film with it. After about an hour the camera quit on them.

Since we knew that there is a question with the power output of the RS232/lens connector we are unsure if that is the problem (RED thinks maybe we pinched the internal lens cable since it looked like that might have been what happened on Erik's camera.) Erik was already changing from the RS232 connector to the rear power connector since it isn't clear whether the RS232 can supply enough power.

RED will receive my camera today and check it to see if it is an unrelated problem or has something to do with the mount/RS232/lens connector.

Since there is a tendency on this board to go into panic mode over any problem I didn't want to say anything before RED had evaluated it. It really doesn't matter to all of you since Erik is already switching away from that power source and as his photo shows he has already started changing the mounts to accommodate that.

By way of explanation, Erik has gone back and forth over the development period on whether to draw power from the RS232 or the rear power ports. The tradeoff is the rs232 port is a little more elegant in that it is a short run for the cable and would include the data if and when RED ever implements the previously announced i/data. Since RED has not given any timetable for that implementation and I believe has dropped i/data from their newer lenses nobody knows if or when it will happen. By going to the rear port you get a much higher level of power but you have that longer cable so you will probably need to put those little cable mount thingies on your camera to hold in place so it doesn't snag on other things. If and when i/data becomes enabled you will just need a cable to go from one of the 4 pin ports on the mount to the 10 pin on the camera.

I guess another tradeoff is you can't power anything else with that rear port, unless there's an extra output on the mount for daisy-chaining... I don't know what else I'd use it for, but it's a consideration.

There are two rear ports on the RED for external power, and I believe you can daisy chain from the mount - I think a zoom motor is in the works either from birger or viewfactor

Huh. I didn't realize RED dropped i/data from their lenses. We might not see i/data on camera for a long time. And even then it would have to pass aperture info to the the display. Isn't that assuming a lot?

Is there an alternative way to get aperture info possible? Seems like a tiny LCD on the Birger should have probably been designed.

Remember in theory, the bluetooth remote will show iris data.

well. there was a dude who posted on here awhile ago to see if there was any interest in his remote box for birger mount.

I guess that sounds pretty good provided that has buttons to adjust the aperture and you could attach it to the rod system and use it just like the cabled knob. Then you'd just use the blue tooth all the time and keep the cabled knob for backup. Make sense?

I do know it'll drive people crazy if they can't see their aperture.

having wireless remote control of the lens and iris is one of the reasons we're all here.

No.
A few beta test kits out there.

No one knows of yet.

You are not alone ;)

DOH.. Man. Can we just get a cold mount from someone to strap on some tasty lenses? Oh well, guess I'm now officially in the waiting pool.

Is there any info on the BT remote? it was the main reason I ordered the Birger system.

I don't want over optimistic rhetoric, just a sense of it's current development state - if it is still on the cards at all?

I have asked about this several times with no reply.

As soon as we are shipping the Canon mounts and knobs in volume, we will open up a comment period and public developent of the remote. We will announce the schedule and scope of this in the coming weeks.

And for those who are about to ask for more status on the mounts, expect more information tomorrow.

Wow... that was a fast response!

Thanks Eric.

Sounds like you have it all under control. And I guess you are saying that it is still on the cards, which is great.

I just wanted to add something. There is lots of take about this mount being a great option because it is a cheaper option that the PL mount route. I am into it for different reasons... Weight, and integrated wireless FF.

Happy days!
