Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I have been in photography for most of my life and shot with just about anything, those that know me, know well that I'm always in Pursuit of the best of the best.

Some times do, the best of the best, it is best only by so little that both, price differences and workflow complications might make the best of the best, so not the best.

I like every camera/lens combination I have used, Hasselblad, Leica, Nikon and Canon, Canon was what I ended up staying with since I got my hands on the 1D bodies and L series lenses, I do believe that the differences I find in the various lenses are not warted any lost of sleep over it.

What I come to value is the incredible selection (especially today) of the EF glass and the quality of their new MK III 1D bodies.

Now in cinema use related lenses take a value and momentum of their own, especially when compared to High end Cine Glass at 10 or 20 times the cost, so is it a ARRI/ZEIIS MP warted 10 or 20 or more times then a SLR glass like the Canon L series that I use? The answer is simple, NO! RED is here, RED Primes will be here, the 300mm Prime is already here and a fantastic lens taht is, and Birger is here, so the rules are changing like they have never changed before.

Obviously when budget is unlimited, the most well known Cine lenses and widely used by every one in the industry, is what will be use, but I assure you that very few, will know what lenses were used when they go see a movie, or what camera was used, for that matter.

I love the ARRI/ZEISS MASTER PRIMES, and look forward to buy them, but I'm also seriously considering the Birger/Canon route, and this is why I purchased one as soon as it was announced, as this could be a great option, and obviously looking forward for the RED PRIMES.

At the end of the day it always will come down to what you are shooting, not what you are shooting it with, story content and visual capture will remain the absolute only important matter.

Ciao

A $50,000 lens will always be "better" than a $500 one — even if the only difference is the price tag.

Kinda like this:

Wine, high priced audio cables, lenses, matteboxes, jaguars, sexy blondes... that is exactly what's going on. If you believe the emperor has clothes then he has clothes. And the more you believe the better they look.

Just called Eric... they are getting the first batch of 10 people ready to ship in a week *hope i heard that correctly* they're the ones who've worked really closely with Eric and the birger mount.

i'm #42.. i ordered on the 25th of November. so i'm getting it in Two weeks.

Study: $90 wine tastes better than the same wine at $10.

That's a pretty interesting study, illustrating my point. But IMHO you should take sexy blondes off the list.

I think I'm one of those first ten so fingers crossed. But in three weeks I'm organizing the MARCH ON BOSTON if they aren't ready. JK ...

You should be, you let him borrow your camera.

I'm not sure I made the top ten. But it would only have to be the top 10 Canon reservations - a number of reservations are Nikon. It sucks sitting here looking at my camera with build 15 on it.

I shot some 120FPS with the body cap on. The footage was all black, but 5x slower. Kinda like a Spinal Tap album. It's as black as it gets. Kewl.

so lets see it!!

Actually just take your canon lens and hold it 44mm in front of the sensor - should be perfect.

joel, don't tell me you've been sitting on #141 all this time with no lens!

Has anyone tried to take any pinhole footage yet?

I just got it a couple weeks ago. I've been holding off for ANY slr mount. But once the Birger looked like it was close to shipping I decided to pay for the camera.

On a whim this weekend I broke down and rented a PL mount lens to at least play with the camera. They only had a macro lens in stock 'cause everything else had rented. Ants are pretty f'n scary at 4K.

Pinhole photography needs loooong exposure times, since the opening of your iris is... well.... a pinhole. :) I don't think red would be able to capture much more than a super noisy picture with a pinhole cap on. DOF would be similar to the smallest chipped cameras out there too... infinite.

On another note, I think the birger mount is what's missing to really complete the red package as a great low budget system with great features. PL glass is just too expensive and red is all about raising the bar quality wise without breaking the bank. If you have budget for great PL glass, you may as well just shoot film and be done with it.

My .02 :)

I called Birger today, I don't think I spoke with Erik but I was able to confirm my order as well as find out that I am #86 in line. I ordered on Nov 28.

He also told me it would be 2 to 3 weeks for delivery.

I just tried to leave a message - but the mailbox is full... Hey, Vincent did the person you spoke to give any indication of when you were going to be contacted by them, had you not called them? Had money already been taken from your credit card?

Erik told me my number's #196(if my memory serves me well), and that my Nikon mount, which was ordered on Nov. 30th, should be shipping in 3 weeks. Now, the fact that you haven't had any confirmation of your order doesn't mean that Erik doesn't have it. He's never actually sent me any confirmation or charged my card. If you sent in your order, rest assured that he has it there.

No he didn't say when I would be contacted only that I should get it in about 3 weeks. My deposit did go through a long time ago. I didn't get much more info, I guess I was in shock that I got through.

He was able to dig up my order in about 20 seconds, and I actually could hear the paper pile as he searched. So I guess he does have some system in place.

Wow. I'd say that's great news for Nikon mount buyers. I've always guess there would be quite a delay between Nikon and Canon mounts. Maybe not... still looking forward to the first end user reports of any fully working mount though. It's hard for me to fathom we haven't seen one fully operational test of the Canon and now we hear Nikons will be in the field in 3 weeks.

I wonder if your #196 is for Nikon mounts or all mounts. That is awesome news if it really is going to ship even before NAB.

Nikon mount?

Nikon mount?

Does he mean a dumb Nikon mount and a smart Canon or both ones in smart mode? I always thought the Nikon was supposed to take a lot longer.

Sure love to have that mount for a shoot in mid April - I know, I know - "unless it's in your hands - don't plan on it."
