Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I got my Red camera today, but I have no PL lenses, so it's kinda sat in it's box waiting for the birger mount....lol

Thanks for the news Eric, hope to get mine shortly.

Darkline, I'll be in the same boat with you next week. RED. . . but no lenses. Maybe I can turn it into the world's most expensive camera obscura!!! A pinhole RED!

Stephen

Go rent some PL lenses guys. Can't let those cameras sit in a box. Rent them over the weekend so you get extra days for your rental. Seriously, less than $400 gets you a nice weekend with a set of primes.

Steve

LOL Stephen, we were actually thinking of doing some pinhole footage this weekend.

It was a bit of an anti-climax. Been waiting two years for the Red camera and when I opened it I kinda went... hmmmmm and put it back in the box :-)

I might rent some lenses this weekend, but it's a bit more expensive here in the UK. Cheapest I've seen is around $600-$700. And part of me is thinking I should wait another 2 weeks as I wouldnt be renting the lenses for a paying job, but just for me to play.

Tempted though....

You guys are a lot richer than I am. . .

I can't afford $400 for a couple of days of fun. This is crazy.

I'd buy a PL mount lens on Ebay, but they are all from RUSSIA. . . and that's not something I'm willing to take a chance on.

Speed

Speed

Noise happens with DSLR because the camera control is optimized for speed focus. This will be gentle, and as slow or fast as the hand controls it with Birger. Sound from the lens will be very minimal if any.

:) Come on RED; you're people company, not a marketing smooches, we need the mount !

OK, so what about PL? Will there be an adapter from Canon mount to PL?

M

I contacted a lens tech about this. He said it shouldn't be a problem to make one. The internal diameter of PL and EF mounts are both 54mm. So one would just have to sandwich together a male EF mount, from say a parts lens or a macro extension tube, with a female PL mount. The difference between FFD is 8mm, (EF is 44mm, PL is 52mm) so you'd just have to space them that far apart.

That's the great thing about the EF mount. It's FFD is shorter than most other mounts, so it makes a great base mount on which to adapt others.

I'll contact the tech that I talked to and see if I can post his info and if he wants to make a bunch of these. And at what cost, etc...

I know that Birger is supposed/hinted/rumored to be making interchangeable mounts, but I don't know if it's a quick change type system. But having a quick EF to PL adapter would be great. It would also allow the use of cine glass with a Canon dSLR so one could use it as a directors finder.

2 days away from shipping ?

2 days away from shipping ?

Hello Erik,
Are you still on schedule for starting shipping on Feb 29th ?
Cheers,

The lack of info and contact from these guys is not so hot, especially given the way RED has kept us in the loop even at times of super high stress. I, like others, have now opted to go and spend $6.5k for the RED 18-50mm. As a matter of principle I may just now go the PL route.

Cheers,
Mark.

I agree Mark ... it's bad enough for terrestrial folk ... trying to shape an underwater housing is doubly complicated

Arghhh ... very very frustrating ... :ranting2:

EDIT : Hope you still have your SWP44 ... the RED 18-50 has very close focusing ability and look forward to hearing if it will work behind the SWP44. I know it's designed for the Sony Z1 (or whatever Sony model ....) ... but VERY worth a test ;-)

Yep, sure have David. I definitely need this glass on this current job. Almost had a T-Bone incident today with a Tiger, me on the receiving end......hairy stuff. A local video shooter has the footage on a small HDV cam so may see if I can get a copy and post it.......Johnny on Ice tonight!

Cheers,
Mark.

Ouch! That's a lot of money. Is that a done deal? Even if Erik lets us down somehow, there are multiple manual Nikon options coming on line from RED and others within a matter of weeks, and I think Canon FD is already available.

You could get one of these fisheyes for $400-800 now and use it on a $500 or less Nikon mount - and still be able to use it when the Birger EOS arrives.
