  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Thanks for the update, Erik, but I'm confused: what do you mean by "Production ramp will start friday"? I got the impression from previous posts that everything was machined long ago.

The last delay was due to the fact that the camera just does not give enough power for some lenses that people might want to use. We are providing facility to power the mount externally from the camera, but will not start to offer that cable until a later date. Most lenses don;t need this. Some of the Sigmas do.

I'm betting my Sigma macro lenses (50mm, 105mm) need that extra power - those things have some hefty barrel torque.

Hello,

Just a question. You mentioned that you were up to letter "G". Does that mean people A-G have received confirmation of their orders? I didn't receive an confirmation for an order that I placed on April 26th via PDF in email to info@birger.com.

Best,

ATF

Sounds like they are going to sort through the whole list, A-Z, before contacting anyone. That is why Thursday will be the day they send out emails to the first 100 reservation holders.

Great news Erik.

One question:

What about to use Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS Digital?

For example Ken Rockwell wrote this:

"Having compared it directly to my Nikkor 12-24mm f/4 AF-S DX,
it's obvious to me that this Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is better than my Nikkor.

This Tokina 11-16mm is the world's fastest and sharpest ultrawide lens
for small format digital cameras (Nikon DX and Canon 1.6x).
Considering its bargain price of under $600, its the world's best ultrawide lens for digital SLRs.

It is very well made. Its distortion is much easier to correct than the Nikkor's."

Good call Sanjin. This lens looks like it's the wide angle I'll be buying. Straight 2.8, sharper and cheaper. Thanks for the tip.
I second the motion...

By "production ramp" I was only referring to final assembly and test - the part of production that is done in house.

Knobs are still on hold, as I am not yet happy with the adjustable tension. I think we will have that resolved and start shipping before the end of the month.

Erik, it sounds good that you are not happy with the first solution but instead seek for a better approach. At least I have seen enough equipments which do not last and can be rated as second class.

I'm pretty sure I and many others will be even more pleased on the commitment in quality once we have had the mount and knob in heavy use for some time.

Thanks for the status update.

Gotcha, thanks. Any estimates on when we might expect the January (109) mounts, assuming we pay our balance promptly?

AKABAKA, what does the "109" refer to? Is that how many orders there were in January?

It refers to Birger's record system. It was explained in this thread a while back, but damned if I want to dredge through and find it. Basically, the confirmation number on your sales order is a 9-digit number in the form of xxx.yyyyyy, where xxx signifies the month you placed your order: November is 107, December is 108, January is 109, etc. I think the other 6 numbers were just a more detailed timestamp of when the order came in.

107 = November. It was so obvious... Thanks, AKABAKA!

Hello,

Can't wait for the mount! I'm using some old Nikon glass with the RED Nikon adapter. Just picked up new Canon glass a month ago after it was stolen. The lens I really want to try is my new Canon Telephoto EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM.

Amazing piece of glass!

All orders are in the system (we think), and all cancellation requests processed/refunded. We are double checking in alphabetical order for missing orders, and all change requests. We are on the letter "G". Amy is out on tuesday. She thinks this phase will complete on wednesday, and the sales order confirmations will all go out that day.

So at what point can we assume that our order was not received or processed? Erik, can you give us a drop dead date, so that those of us whose orders have never been processed can know this with a degree of certainty?

I'm pretty sure my faxed order from back in November is kaput, but I don't want to place a new order until I can confirm this suspicion one way or another.
