  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Gotta' say that the debut of the Birger Canon mount for RED ONE at LART is very exciting. We have a serious collection of Canon glass for this and are dedicating an entire work station at LART for the testing of the Canon glass - a significant part of LART's mission. The fact that Erik is coming himself to supervise the use of the mount is huge.

Post-LART i would guess the pre-orders increase exponentially. All part of the RED revolution.
 
Yes Ken,

it should be a great section for RED/BIRGER/CANON, and I do agree with you that the results will show the quality and flexibility of Canon glass and sales of the Birger mount will rise significantly.

I truly believe in the L series glass for RED as I stated in other posts, my other choices would be Master Primes then Cooke lenses, with surely less breathing, vignetting, color matched and so on, but at what an incredible price difference.

At the end I also believe that filmmaking for Cinema it will benefit from the look this lenses can give, as I already have seen some RED/Biger/Canon images, and wile they were not shot in the best conditions they still look good.

So in aticipation to that experience I look forward to test my lenses on the LART event were the shoot will be done surely in a much professional way and with fewer people around so to concentrate on the tests.

At last it is great ( as Ken said) the Erik will be there in person, even if this is obviously in his best interest, it is not often that product manufacturer give time and attention to private testing events such is LART, but again understanding the buyer need for public testing coupled with the knowledge that industry professionals will be present at LART to do this tests, it is a sensitive and good move on Erik's part to attend.

My self I believe in the presence of the manufacturer in any type of events possible, as for this I appreciated Ted's presence at several of RED's events I have attended to.

I trusted the Birger idea from the start and I believe that they will sale a greater then expected number of EOS mounts.

Ken do you know if any one is bringing the 24-70L?
That lens has a great 3D look to his image very unique to it.

Mike Hastings has lent me his Canon 10-22mm for the LART tests as this may be a big solution for us underwater guys. I'll ask around for the 24-70.

I have a 24-70 f/2.8L I could lend. I'm not available but I am willing to lend it to someone I know, maybe Evin or Brooke. I also have several others I would like to see tested to include:
EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS
EF 24 f/1.4L
EF 35 f/1.4L
EF 400 f/2.8L IS
EF 600 f/4L IS

we will see what that little one can do, and curious to see the 12-24 sigma too,

but prefer the 16-35L II an will love to shoot the new 14L II to bed is not in my hands yet.

Looks like we have found the 24-70 after all, I will probably buy one any way but great that this forum is so pulled together and every one is willing to give something for the good of everyone.

Thanks tracy for offering the 24-70 and company that is one of the very few lenses on my list that I wanted to test before buying it but already know of its famous look.

I haven't had a confirmation email from Birger yet to say they got my order. Has anyone gotten an email or is it simply that Birger is on holidays for the American long weekend?

Ok, one more order for the Nikon mount is out. Too bad the mount will not be ready before March, 15th. Considering the delay of the Red Nikon mount that means PL glass till end of March I guess.
 
I placed an order with Birger for the Canon mount yesterday...no reply email either...

I believe that the only reference we've had on delivery of the RED Nikon mount was from Jim himself and that was "after the 1st of the year ('08)."
 
I'm just about to send in the form for our Nikon mount an am super-psyched about having customizable electronic control over our AF-S zooms.

I'm definitely a bit bummed about the ship date. I think if it could be pulled up to mid-to-late January it might alleviate some pain for many of us (or at least for me). Depending on what happens with that March 15th date, I think I'll be picking up the Red F-mount, accept that we don't have any non-AF-S lenses at the moment. A monkey wrench for sure, but we'll all just have to be patient and hopeful as usual.

If it's any help, I'd be cool with putting more than 20% down to build up the "retooling costs" pool to get the mount out earlier. If a bunch of us put 50-80% down, maybe that would work?

I've love my Nikon DSLR but the info that the new Nikon 14-24 will not take filters was deal breaker for me, and I've ordered the Canon mount. I think the beauty of the Birger solution is that it will enable us to build a very lightweight RED camera, which is what we need to use it constantly for ob doco and single operator work, but everyone who has used the camera says that RED often needs ND on the lens! so if you are thinking of using the new Nikon lenses (lovely glass) you are going to need to mount rails and a matt box. I think this is something that other Nikon lovers should consider..
Also I would like to second Scott Olson's comment about the size of the iris control. Again: I feel that the Birger system is really a lightweight, lower end, doco and indie solution (nothing wrong with that!). Anyone with the cash and financiers for major feature is going to use PL mount Grade A lenses and have a big crew to manipulate them.. So I need a small lightweight iris control, not another big focus style knob that requires me to mount another rail etc
I'm also wondering if we could use the remote constantly (as single operators); either slung around our necks or mounted to the camera somehow..? So again, PLEASE, that needs to be as lightweight and small as physically possible and simple, including the batteries.. (which could be AA no..?)
