Birger Lens Mount Reservations

IMPERO SHIPPED

IMPERO SHIPPED

Erik came through for me and I received my mount and impero remote control yesterday. I am having a few issues getting everything to work repeatably. It worked for hours the first night and now getting it to sync up again is really hard. I don't think it's an issue with the mount but with the remote but I'm sure i will figure it out. Does someone have a very focussed and central place to get info about all of this. I am going back and forth between reduser, viewfactor, google, jay kelley's videos and the Birger sight. it's fine if it works perfectly but the troubleshooting is a bitch. Erik definitely did the stand up thing and overnighted the package though which has made me a lot less nervous about Monday.

I have no problems syncing the Birger and Impero, or the Birger and Mac Pro. But I did have initial problems with no control of the iris at all. Once I successfully synced the Impero and Birger I have full control of the iris using both Impero and Mac Pro, but only the top button on the mount itself controls iris.

iData working with latest build 20 beta

iData working with latest build 20 beta

After upgrading to the latest build 20 beta I have iData on all lenses. I will test more later. But so far so good. Also, this build has finally fixed the audio codec error.

First of all, Erik and Amy, congratulations. The best I've ever heard is "Our children may make our heart so big that it has difficulties to fit into the chest". This is from some American writer, perhaps somebody knows the original phrase. I've only read the Finnish translation and this here is a clumsy translation back into English.

I still get dropped frames with the 70-200 L on Library 20a Impero/1.8 Camera build 20.

Andrew, shot several hours today with the old EF 70-200mm/f2.8 using the newest build 20.1.2 which came out just couple days ago. No problems whatsoever with lens data or anything else. Furthermore, the Impero syncs also without difficulties with the mount and I'm able to boot the camera having the Birger cable attached etc.

I just installed the mount and everything seems to be working fairly well except two issues. I only have the 1.8 50mm lens to test with so perhaps that is what is causing the challenge. I am also on build 19.

1.) The distance readout on the Red is way off. I am focused on a focus chart about 6 feet away and it tells me 928'
2.) Because I don't have an impero yet, I am using the mac software via bluetooth. In the software distance field where I assumed one could type a distance and instantly have the lens focus to that point. When i try to type in a specific distance the box is locked out.

Anyone have similar experiences?

For 1. Hold middle button for long calibration. Then it should be more accurate, but the 50mm f1.8 Mk II isn't the best example of a high resolution lens in terms of number of focus stops....

Not sure of answer for 2. sorry without using the software.

I was wondering what this distance field is for. Not able to type anything there.

I found you have to be patient. Make sure you hold the knob very close to the mount. I nearly touch the two antenae. If after a few attempts, I can't get the two to sync during power up, then I hold down the I button while powering up for a second or two then release the I button and wait nearly thirty seconds. Usually this syncs everytime. If that doesn't work, I hard plug the 4-pin lemo from the knob directly into one of the open ports on the mount and power up and wait 20-30 seconds. I then disconnect the 4-pin limo cable, power the knob down, unplug the mount from the 12v camara supply, re-plug 12 volt power and then power up the knob and wait 30 seconds. If your hearing any sort of clicking the knob and the mount are talking, just be patient eventually after the handshake, everything syncs. Then, just hit your cal button and your good to go.

Hey Lonny,

Thanks! Your advice just enabled me to connect via bluetooth for the 1st time in a couple of weeks. Holding down "I" and waiting longer than I usually allowed did it. It does clearly state this in the Birger instructions but I did not realize one might have to wait so long to get the Impero and mount to see each other over bluetooth.

Thanks again.

How are people finding the 17-55 with latest camera, impero and birger firmware/lens libraries?

I get the lens data, but the lens is jumpy. kind of a problem because its the main lens.

Is there any update on Birger's focus/iris controlled nikon mount?

Last update was:

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=27811&page=3

Preliminarily, we expect to ship Nikon mounts in volume by VISION 2009 in Stuttgart, the big trade show for industrial cameras, in November of this year. All reservation holders will be invited to join the Beta program as soon as we have stable hardware and software. I think this will be in early September.

Also jumpy for me. Ken had me try several versions of impero firmware, but no luck. Other lenses are fine.

I've got RED 20.1.3 Release version going now...

I've got some jumpiness/lag with quite a few lenses -- 70-200 4L, 135 2L, 85 1.8, and that 17-55 have it.

Usable for stock and does okay with slight focus changes, but rack focus has a lag/pop thing happening...the knob twists, nothing happens, then 'pop' focus change. Will continue checking various lenses...

should add: in wired mode, with 20a lens library, 1.8 firmware Impero and Birger

This might be indicative of something really promising. Previously the camera was only querying the lens data at 8Hz. Maybe now the queries are at the full frame rate. Anybody from RED want to confirm this?

The good news, if this is the problem, we already know what the fix is. It might take a week or two to get it rolled out. Paul, please confirm my suspicion as to the what of the problem, by turning off the lens data in the camera, and seeing if the jumpiness goes away.

Jumpy with 20a and Impero 1.8 firmware. Ditto on my new 70-200 f2.8L IS.

BUT.... L primes I used recently were rock solid and absolutely gorgeous to use with the Birger!! 24mm f1.4L Mk II, 50mm f1.2L, 85mm f1.2L.

Lens data was intermittent though. this was with camera build 20.1.2. Image results in the Shot on Red section in this thread ;)
