  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Thanks, Harmonica this is just the beginning. Mike, I will get photos as soon as I can - we're just slammed (as they say) here in preparation for a performance event tomorrow night. Bad timing...

I hope to be able to devote the day Sunday to the long awaited mount. On purely visual inspection thus far though, it looks to be beautifully made. I'll report back.

I decided to wait and see what actually happens.
In the meantime I want to now what is the effective way to cancel your order.
thanks

When the knobs are released, that's when we'll know if we have a truly functional unit.

I am hopeful. . .

I just installed my two new production Birger mounts. Since I do not have knobs the mount just controls iris, but it does take control of the focus when you hit the center mount button, so it can do focus calibration to work with the future knob. The back focus procedure is very simple. Before you install the mount, screw in the collimation ring all the way in to the back of the mount until it stops. Then back it out until you can read the number four just above the right most canon gold pin on the bottom of the EF mount. Put on a lens and do a back focus test with a zoom lens. Make sure you have your mount cable connected and the camera on, and you hit both top and bottom buttons simultaneously to open the iris to full open. Do a back focus test. If it is off, loosen the four mount screws, stick your fingers into the mount and rotate the collimation ring. Then retighten the screws and check focus again. Repeat. Repeat. I used a back focus chart at about four feet from the lens. Zoom out all the way and focus, zoom in and refocus. If you have to focus closer for the tele than the wide then you need to rotate the ring to a smaller number. And vice versa. It takes about six to ten tries, at least it did for me. My two cameras seem to have different back focus positions. One is a three, one is a five. So don't expect to duplicate the ring number with multiple cameras, every camera can be different and require a unique back focus adjustment. I will be using them more monday, but so far after several hours they are working well. Remember that since these are not cine lenses, not every zoom may agree with back focus. Perhaps we can find someone out there who will be able to collimate our lenses for us for a fee. L series will probably be closest matches til then. Thanks Erik for making a great product. Anybody else out there have them working yet?

Ok, had some comments on what I was basing my list on. LOL. I basically wanted to have an idea of when I was going to get mine so I just started going by first posts in this thread thinking maybe that person may have ordered one. I figured if they didn't they would let me know.

There was no way I am going to read through everyones thread, I only got to page 80 and was like, "what the hell am I doing this for?". "Oh yeah, I want a lens on my g**d d**m Red.". Even cursing to myself didn't motivate me enough to go through the whole thread. So if someone PM's me I take there info and correct the list.

Badda Badda Bing Badda Boom.....

If I have listed Fedex Email then that person has posted that. If it says received than that person has posted that they received there's as well.

customer service please..

Hey, I sent you a PM yesterday...

If you did then I got it. I will not be checking back threads all the time so if you send a PM then I will add it with a day or three.

List is updated after I read info posted by Harmonica. Any other corrections anyone sees PM me.

Hey, Mark - mine is working too. I have a friend Jorge from Cinematechnic that is a long time Arri camera and lens repair technician that has been working with my various birger mounts with the goal of being able to offer that kind of service - installation and collimation. He has a collimation setup. He also has a Century lens projector and we plan to make a canon adapter so we can test various lenses sometime in the future.

My two cameras seem to have different back focus positions. One is a three, one is a five. So don't expect to duplicate the ring number with multiple cameras, every camera can be different and require a unique back focus adjustment.

From what I recall from my first discussion with Erik back in January when I loaned him my camera that this was the problem - that there was no fixed reference surface that was the same from camera to camera and this required him to create the intermediate backfocus adjuster which was a pretty major project and in one way or another the origination of most of the problems (Although the later possible power problems was a separate issue). As you know, even back then, we both had working mounts that worked fine but required external power and computer control (kind of like Andy's now.)

I just emailed Birger and 2-3 days later I had am email from Amy confirming my deposit had been returned. I had of course included my order number.
Kind of glad I canceled, I still believe in Eric's product but would like to wait and see what Smart Canon options develop for the IMS Mount.

Aqua, if your friend could offer installation and collimation service it would be a great thing. For me installation of the mount is no more than a ten minute affair, back focus only takes about 30 minutes, so I will only be interested in lens collimation. It would be great to normalize every still lens we buy. Future accessories for Birger will include distance info on an LCD, that will only be accurate if the lens is properly collimated. Of course, today, collimation is mainly required to make sure all our zooms are in perfect focus close and wide.

I am supposed to be good at math...

I am supposed to be good at math...

I am supposed to be good at math...or maybe my memory is just not so good...

One of our Customers just pointed out to me that there were too many steps in the iris range, to be at only 1/2 stop steps. The 24-70 f/2.8 has 25 distinct stops: 2.8, 3.1, 3.4, 3.7, 4.0... 22.6. This is four steps per stop (mathematically, 1/3 stop steps, but for simplicitly we will call them 1/4 stop steps).

So, what is the version that I have here in the lab, that I previously announced I wasn't yet ready to release? I'll let you know, if and when it is ready for release... but I'll give you a hint... what is 1/2 of 1/4?
