  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Jason,

you mean the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS? It is very unfair to compare a Prime to a Zoom, even to one as good as the 70-200L.

Yes, the EF 200mm f/2.0L IS produces by far the best images I ever seen on any other lens, including my two favorite the EF 85mm f/1.2L II and the EF 400mm f/2.8L.

It has an organic and 3D fill to its images like no other, and the Blur it produces wide open is just beautiful!

Will do a review shortly.

ciao

Yeah, that's what I meant. Don't know why I thought 210. And I'm okay with being unfair. :bleh:

I'm curious how close or how far is the quality. If I can get away with my 70-200, then great. But if you show me a BIG difference in comparison shots, I'll start getting the primes (I really like the 85). I was planning on getting the 14mm to go with the 24-70L and 70-200L.

I'm also curious about the longer lenses past the 200.

Canon has always been known for their telephotos, not so much their wides, but supposedly the new 14mm II is pretty good.

A couple of my regular working travel still photographers pack the 16-35, 24-70 and 70 200 as their standard bag and pretty much get by with just those for almost everything.

I just saw Sanjin's red footage. I don't think he was using any L glass, but it looked great to me. I liked the look.

I was at stage 5 in January when I put a Red 18-50 on my order.

Three more months until my warranty expires. Hurray IMS!

I'm talking to a machinist to see if he can extract the Birger "brain" and mount it into or onto the IMS Canon adapter. Might have to go with Andy's brain, though.

One mount to rule them all!

I just talked to Erik

I just talked to Erik

Really!

I didn't want to take too much of his time, but I had to know something since I was making a decision about some PL glass. He is focused on getting mounts out the door and asked me to post "what I could remember" here. He may post himself later tonight or tomorrow, but I would be just as happy for him to spend the time getting one more mount out the door.

Basically, having had some problems with some mounts that delivered (already discussed in this thread), they are double and triple checking the mounts before they ship. This is taking much longer than they like and mounts are going out slowly, only about 10 a day right now, with some going out today and some going out Friday, then more on Tuesday. I am later in the 107 group (late Nov. '07 order) and he said ours would go out early next week.

He is frustrated and apologetic and probably realizes that won't be enough for some on this thread ... everyone can make their own decisions. I got the feeling that they were just through a batch of testing and he was feeling optimistic and just happened to be ready to pick up the phone when I called.

I'm guessing (pure conjecture) that they were concerned about some they thought were ready to go and decided to unpack and test them again - or had some other surprise that made them check and recheck them. I am not one of the beta testers and have only spoken to him at NAB and then once over the summer. Whenever I do I get the confidence to keep waiting ... so I'll wait. I think it will be worth it.

Well... I'll hang on to my fond memories of testing the Birger mount at NAB to get me through these times... :)

i remember you saying it was better than the 300mm 2.8 as well a while back?
Is this true

Correct, the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS was the best Super telephoto lens available by Canon closely fallowed by the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS, but now there is no doubt that the Focal length and the speed of the new EF 200mm f/2.0L IS demands respect as far as been the new King of the Super telephoto lenses.

The shot below of Muoy, was taken at the BAr She Bartends and was shot at f/2.0 with a shutter speed of 1/50 ISO set @ 100 hand held with IS on, no Flash, with a very dark environment, this shot was the first I have done that evening as a test of what the lens would capture in such dark place, and in truth I was pleased with the results, She pops out of the shadows and even so it is not a scentific test or perfect shot, it wasn't meant to be, was just a quick pic.

But this on RED will Shine like you can't imagine.

Yeah - it was my 50 1.2 that was used to show the thing off. Every once in a while I will sniff it to remind me that there was a mount it touched once long ago...

hmmmmmmmmm

I have done some posting over at the Lenses threads regarding this, but obviously with so much posts they get burried.

The difference is within Zooms and Primes is getting very tin this days as technology is getting better and better, but in a Motion camera vs. a Still camera, it is about Chromatic Aberration, Breathing, Sharpness, Vignetting, and yet all of this things are very well controlled with all "L" series glass, even when used with motion.

The difference it is there and you can see it, but how many Film goers will see it? NONE!

Get what you can afford, and start shooting, unless off course you are working on big assignments, commercially and you have to have the absolute best available, like I do, then get the 200 IS vs. the 70-200 any day or night, but also be prepared to pay an extra 5k for it, and then again in Cinematography if you are required for the best available you will probably have to go with Master Primes, but for this Thread sake we stay with Canon glass, so any "L" glass will do just fine, just don't get any MARK I on the lenses which have the Mark II available aas the fdifference, such as in the 14mm L II is like day and night.

Thanks ketch. mark ii. did you see sanjin's recent post of ims test footage with his canon lenses? i don't think he was using L glass or mark ii... and I still like the look.

by the way, are you sure it was the quality of the lens that was making her pop out of the background like that? I was thinking of two other reasons she was sticking out, but that just might be only my personal observations...

What's more beautiful here?

The woman or the lens?

Yes I have been seen some of Sanjin's great posts, and the IMS is also of great interest here, just didn't have much time lately to respond to as many threads as I would like. But trust me when I say that if He had the MArk II's on the one available the images would be even better.

And yes they are both beautiful, and they both stick out like a sore tomb.:)

Keep an eye on upcoming posts about the SIRENES of TI, will shoot them with the same lens tonight.

Ciao

Andy's website is back up again, but it seems he is following in Eric's tracks. Last entry about his smart Canon mount is a week old, where he promised an update that day or the next...

at least he has a picture of his mount ad a video showing it working!!!!!!

I talked to Erik today as well. He said he has been silent and delayed in shipping because he felt he had to up his testing protocols to assure mounts he ships will be reliable. I just received a FedEd email. So he is now shipping. Who else has a package in transit?
