  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

We have only processed 1/3 of the reservations. We are working on them again today. I hope we will have them wrapped up by tomorrow afternoon, as we would like to close out our year before I leave for the holiday.
Eric, thanks for the update.

We have a camera to play with for the next two weeks...:whistling:

Nikon mount is on target for late February. We have been asked by a number of people to provide "dummy" Nikon mounts in the interim. We are considering the request.

Erik,

I sent in my order yesterday. I'd still like to see some footage.

Yes, do tell about the dummy Nikon mount. I think I just might want one of those puppies, too. How much is that mount likely to cost?

And, for what it is worth, I'm still waiting for that confirmation.

:)

Stephen

Erik- I know I'd really like to have those charges reflected on this years books.

Any update ...

Good news Erik ... any chance you can give us an update on testing after the two weeks ? Would also be good to see some pictures

Merry Xmas to all ...

great, thanks Tonaci. Is there any info on when ? I've been a bit skeptical but I sure would like to see Birger come through.
Aloha

Birger confirmed a few months ago that GibCor will be beta testing one of the first Birger Canon prototypes. Exact delivery date for the proto has not been confirmed yet, but I'd guess early in January.

My guess is after short beta test period, if no significant problems are uncovered, that production units could ship sometime fairly soon after that. As with RED, Birger is subject to change and delay as necessary.

Birger has been in business for many years making other electronics products - I think they will be thorough, and their product will be well made.

In October GibCor was the first to fit a Birger Canon mount to a RED camera (#8), of which we posted pics on RED User. It was a non-functional prototype which we installed for a week for the purposes of having one of our water housings made.

I spoke to Erik on Friday and there are some minor tweaks due to changes to the new mount (I think a bit of wiring change for the data interface and something else.) Erik has a camera on loan from one of the local boston people and is doing final testing on the mount this week, however it is an original 100 and since I am getting my #206 (new version camera) - (hopefully) in the next few days (Jim posted at 4:20 AM that they will ship cameras this month) - I am going to send it up to Erik for a day for them to do final checkout to make sure no surprises with the new version.

PS I picked up a Canon EOS40D last week. Very nice! Circuit City had it on sale with a 28-135 Image stabilized zoom cheaper than B&H and then gave me an additional 10% discount basically just for asking (they had a 10% discount mentioned on the website for online orders picked up at the store, but I don't think it was really eligible, but they gave it to me anyway - they seemed to be in a deal making mood.)

I already have the 10-22 and will be buying the 70-200 this week. I was going to get the 24-70 also but it seems like Canon is about to update that lens (they updated the 16-35 zoom a few months ago) so I have been hesitant. I picked up a very nice slightly used 20-35 F2.8 L series for $450 to fill the gap along with a Zeiss Contax mount 50mm f 1.4 that I bought on ebay for $200 (to be used with a Contax to EOS adapter). The 50 is fully manual so it is my superspeed "normal/portrait" lens that is also my manual backup if for some reason the electronics of the mount were to fail. And I wanted to see if the legendary Zeiss optics really make a difference, so I will report back later.

Thanks for the reply, Gibby.

I look forward to the results of your beta test.

To quote myself from another thread:

What I'm curious about is how smooth the focusing is when controlled by the Birger. Will I be able to pull long, smooth, stepless focus movements? If I pull a focus from one extreme of the focus distance to the other, and the focus lasts 3-4 seconds, will it look indistinquishable (in terms of smoothness) from a focus pull on a cine lens with a similar focal length?

According to redmodz.com (who were quoting Erik), the IS on the 16-35 has 1566 steps, but I haven't seen anywhere that states the number of steps in the focusing mechanism.

Does anyone know the number for any of these lenses? This may be the single biggest factor in how smooth the focus changes will be.

If I have time this week, I'm going to record the breathing characteristics of the 16-35, the 24-70, and the 70-200 with a Brevis EOS adapter and an HVX200. This will at least document the *amount* of breathing, but we will have to wait for the Birger to find out how smoothly it can control focus pulls.

Right now, I suppose patience is the key. :turned:

I reserved actioncam on this site.you have this also on your site?I dont see.
No one contacted me yet?
Thanks,
babu

Hi Babu. To clarify. No I do not have anything for Birger and no affiliation with Birger, as we only are doing groupbuy for Actioncam. I only compiled information regarding Birger to make it easier for reference.

Has everyone received their reservation email yet? I ordered at the end of the original "free bluetooth" period, but have not yet received a reservation email. I suspect that they are still swamped, but I just was curious if I'm the only little lost sheep.

Stephen

Stephen, I ordered mine the Sunday after Thanksgiving, which was still within the initial free offer period, and I still haven't heard back. I suspect they're still not finished processing orders. Hope we get an update as soon as Erik returns from vacation.

I believe I ordered the same day you did, and haven't received any emails yet either. I have to keep telling myself "patience is a virtue."

I ordered mine on the 27th of November and I haven't even had a confirmation email that they have received the order, never mind processed it. I'm a small businessman too and I can't imagine treating my clients like that..:sarcasm:
But all the evidence is that Birger have a wealth of experience making quality products for scientific purposes so I'm still quietly confident that they will process all our orders and that their product will be made to an sufficiently high standard for our purposes :)
Also, since RED don't look like they will be able to fulfil my order before the end of March I'm not freaking out about Birger yet..
