  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BeSteady FOUR Thread

Initial tests are inconclusive. I am getting vibration in the footage and I don't know why. I don't know if the motors are set too low or it is a software issue or a hardware (please no) issue or what. Of course, it's Sunday, so I will not get any support today. I will be trying to contact Mike via Skype tomorrow.

Hi Carey,

Is it anything to do with that stuff I PM'd you about a couple of weeks ago? Please ask Mike to answer my e-mails while you talk to him.

Another full day of shooting... I tested adjusting deadband, filter etc. I tried numerous configurations.... We'll see how the footage turns out tonight When I get home and dump it around midnight Eastern. I'll report back. I'm not stopping until I get to the bottom of this.

Good news! I got MUCH better results on Day 2 of testing. There is still some slight vibration when I run. And very slight when I walk. Almost imperceptible. Yet, unacceptable.

I'm hoping I still just need to tweak the settings to find the perfect levels of each to remove all the vibration. I will try to contact support to see if I can dial in the perfect settings for running.

Other good news:

- Much less vibration than on day 1. Same location, same exact shots.

- The horizon was rock solid whether running or walking.

These are VERY promising results. Overall, my results improved 10 fold from Day 1 to Day 2, just by testing different settings and getting to know the beast better.

Bad news:

- There are still some bugs in the software. But is that any different than a computer or a Red camera? Bugs can be fixed. I will make support aware of these bugs.

Bugs:

- A strange thing occurs with ROLL when I first start up the Beast: the camera rolls 15 degrees to the right. It also happens when I set just pan to Follow MODE and leave ROLL and TILT off. The camera rolls 15 degrees to the right and thinks it's calibrated. I found a work-a-round though. I have to set all three in FOLLOW mode, save it... as soon as I save ROLL FOLLOW MODE, the camera levels out... then, if I go back in and uncheck TILT and ROLL, for some reason, the camera stays level. If I turn off the Beast and turn it back on, the same thing happens, ROLL is off 15 degrees to the right, so I have to repeat the work-a-round I discovered each time in order to shoot. This is not a balance issue because the camera is perfectly balanced. It's a bug.

- When I try to save different profiles, 1-6, then try to toggle through the profiles with the center button, the Beast says: "switching profile", but it doesn't switch the profile, it remains on profile 1. The work-a-round is to actually go into the profiles menu and manually arrow down to the next profile... then a check mark will appear next to the profile I selected and it will switch profiles. This is annoying when you want to be able to toggle between profiles with a single click, without having to stop and go through the menus. Ideally, there would be a button or trigger that you could mount on the handle so you could switch between profiles without having to take your hands off of the grips. This way you could switch from "run mode" to "whip pan mode" on the fly and in a single shot.

Overall, my results improved so dramatically from day 1 to day 2 of shooting, that I am SUPER optimistic about being able to get perfect results in time. There IS a learning curve with this gimbal... especially when the support is hard to reach i.e. in another country.

So, the M15 is a bitch to balance, and it's not as ergonomically comfortable as the Beast, but easier to learn the software... They don't use obscure terms like "deadband" and "Expo" and "filter". They use easy to understand language like "pan smoothing" (instead of "Expo") and "pan window" (instead of "deadband").

The M15 gave me ZERO vibration.

Until I am able to get ZERO vibration, I cannot say it's better than the M15. If I am able to get rid of all vibration, I would choose the Beast over the M15.

More testing is necessary before I can make a conclusion.

Hopefully I'll get support to help me today and get this, pardon the pun, ironed out.

Thank you Carey for all the hard work. We all appreciate the fact that doing testing on a gimbal is physically taxing. Hopefully you'll get the support help you need from BS. Get some rest!

I agree with Steve, a big thanks for all the (continued) work... and for keeping us updated. I'm an old fart and know how knackered I get after a long day, all I need is sleep - LOL.

So the reporting is great... and, hopefully, the Beast will soon be tamed and prove it's value.

It's been a long road, but, I feel, we're getting there.

Cheers!

Hi,

I have received confirmation. Pelicases will be delivered tomorrow to our company. Depending on when exactly I will be shipping next batch of units on Tuesday or on Wednesday. I can't predict when exactly those cases will arrive so I can't be certain if we will be able to order courier the same day.

Thank you Carrey for all your testing. I will speak to Mike and Max and ask them to contact you and help you with those vibration issue. This can be caused by various reasons so it will be best if you will be able to make a Skype video call - they will be able help you tweak your unit so there will be no such problems. I believe it is a simple matter of settings and/or balancing. Can you please send us footage from your work so we can see what is the problem there? And please send e-mail with information about what camera configuration you are using and what are the settings your are working with. Add some photos if you can.

Thanks
Peter

Peter - can you mail me regarding the delivery please? You know I'm still awaiting the info update I asked about. Cheers!

Hi Peter -

It would be best to do a Skype chat. I can show you my set up, the weight of the camera, and list the percentages of all of my settings. I'm hoping it's something I can fine-tune in settings and not something that requires a firmware upgrade, or even worse, a hardware fix. Please have them let me know a time that we can Skype and I'll be ready.

Thanks!

Reading this thread is absolute torture.

I know Gunliek is watching it, but I do have to step in for a moment and share this.

How about updating us who have requested a refund? It's been 19 months

Hello,

next batch of units is sent. I will give tracking numbers in e-mails so you will be able to track your units and prepare for their pick-up.

Peter, will this batch work properly? Or will it have the same problems I'm experiencing with mine?

By the way, anyone who thinks I got a free Beast for putting together this group buy is wrong. I had to pay for mine, like everyone else.

Not only did I pay, but I had to organize the group buy, keep tabs, deal with the fallout and the continuous issues and receive a unit that doesn't work prperly rendering me a beta tester.

If this batch works properly, I will know my issue is a hardware issue.
If it doesn't work properly... Congratulations to all of the new beta testers. At which point, we need to start a thread where we can share our experiences.

Peter, I have sent you a mail regarding my situation, we were still waiting to resolve something - please check your mails, as this is something we need to clarify.

Carey, i´m very positive about the performance of the BS4, i had a talk with Michael Kromschroeder after he received his unit back and he was very happy with the performance. Additionally he just visited ACR Systems in Poland.
I hope Michael can chime in about his visit. I´m very thankful for Michaels testing, and i´m in a good mood to recieve a properly working Beast in the next few weeks.

If Michael's unit works great, then that means I have a defective unit.

so all in all, you have a unit that, after manual tuning works but not 100% correctly and produces minor vibrations correct? only in pan axis?
and everything else is 100% set correctly and no mechanical issue of something being loose or wobbly?

We have the same issue with our Ronin. ITS VERY FRUSTRATING. and it messes up our tests big time.

wish you the best and that you will resolve this easily and fast.

kind regards
