Hey everyone,

We are thinking of adding a new computer to the Studio with a RRCX and another GPU (or maybe 2) to do some editing, transcoding etc.

Since the TB chaise only sees the RRCX as if it was connected 4x we were considering buying a PC and throwing it in there.

I've noticed that Pro Res is not supported (Or at least not natively supported) on Windows, so I was wondering, what's the best equivalent of Pro Res 4444 for Windows?

Thank you!

"Miraizon sales have ended.
We sincerely thank you for
your patronage and loyal support."

Uhm? What exactly does that mean?

From what I've learned from the "horses mouth" they were bought out by "somebody" and I have a feeling we'll know who in about 4 days.

Thought, again. I can't stress how much Apple should address this officially through all products that encode various flavors of Quicktime.

Truer words were never spoken. I too am a former VFX animator/supervisor turned Director/DP and have been dealing with this color issue for what seems like 20 years! If Apple or someone would do something, I think I'd die of shock! :D

Phil, Total respect for all you do around here! I owe you dinner sometime in trade for all the cool info you've posted over the years!!

Every time I consider taking my internal library all ProRes I start wondering what the roadmap might be. Will Apple try and keep ProRes authoring off Windows (or just crippled to 8 bit) so Mac hardware is the expensive de-facto "dongle"? Will Apple continue to license more stand alone ProRes recording hardware, both internal and external to camera?

One more checkbox for NAB…

Cheers - #!9

What I have wanted them to do as long as they've allowed for Quicktime Pro to be purchased is to A. include ProRes encoding with that cost or B. charge more to include ProRes encoding in the realm of $50-$200.

I know "why" they don't do this, but at this point in terms of reputation and ProRes being an industry standard for delivery Apple should really get this done.

It allows them to lock down the quality and reliability of the format and enables everybody to use it "everywhere".

I'll lean on them some more though.

So, any NAB announcements on these guys? So far everyone... EVERYONE... I talk to says there's not a good, non-color-shifting ProRes Solution for the PC.

And until Apple updates the processors on the Mac Pro to something not 480 days old, I'm not investing $8,000.00 in a new one.

Seems though, if you're going ProRes, and you want it right (no color shift) then you're gonna have to go mac. At least that's the state of the nation at this moment.

And... there's always MxF to test. It's fully supported on the PC side. And I believe FCPx now natively supports it which would allow dnxhd.

These darn awesome GeForce cards on the PC just would make transcoding so darn nice on a PC - Whole dual card systems for about $3500.00!

Huh, crazy, I had no idea. That really sucks! It has such great integration into all of my apps from Red Cine to Premiere to after effects, just select it from the pulldown tab. It's really too bad they are no longer offering it.

And on this day ProRes comes to REDCINE-X PRO for WINDOWS btw.

Just need to wrestle Adobe and BMD and this isn't a real issue anymore.

On a related note, does anybody have a 5-10 second 6K 5:1 (or 6:1) 24fps R3D file that I can test on my system?

Yea I was expecting something like that from NAB as well. I was looking also that most of the new camera announced record on Pro Res natively, which makes me wonder...when will PC ever get a chance to use it?

At least a solution would be something like the network render that you use with AE, but I don't think any other software besides AE does network rendering, am I correct?

What do you mean by wrestle?

ProRes support from Miraizon was always tricky. Since all third-party ProRes solutions are essentially reverse-engineered, they aren't necessarily going to be 100% correct. We ended up running into some pretty massive issues last summer when working with a pretty specific scenario (using the ProRes files in both AE and Premiere on both Macs and PCs in resolutions above 1080p but sometimes unusual), but it was a situation that we were never able to solve.

Our answer? Cineform. I would never have guessed it at the time, but it turned out to be the best (only?) solution for a stable codec with resolutions above 1080p. And Apple decides that they give a damn or DNxHR becomes available and feasible, Cineform is what I recommend. Even if Miraizon were to come back, I would not recommend going that route. Use Cineform or use ProRes on a Mac. Keep your sanity.

What's the color space for Cineform?
