  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BEST Camera Rigs for RED EPIC .. alts to the Red Clutch

I would recommend Ergocine and their trigger wooden handles. I find wooden handles (especially Ergocine) really comfortable because when I do single hand operations to focus, or access camera controls the grip doesn't twist and thus does not overly stress my hand. I have the clutch and have use several other grips for many years and wooden handles have been the the most comfortable.

Now looking at Mark's post, I'm thinking of replacing all the RED parts in favor for the SpiderGrip parts. I wish I knew about them before, but my HH kit has been a work in progress for too many years :)

Do trigger work with EPIC? If so where does it connect?

I don't like the pendulum effect on the back. I like the camera close to my body, compact, nothing extra sticking out. so I have my AB Battery mount on the top of the shoulder mount. It's great, if you are in LA, you can try it yourself.

How do you guys feel about counterbalance (like a v-mount out the back)? I really dislike having the camera too far out behind my head/shoulder, because I feel like I'm gonna inadvertently hit a frame or something. BUT, given the options, I can't see any better way... The irony is that I'm basically trying to make it sit like an Alexa.

I've tried SOOOO many shoulder support systems/rigs..every single one of them doesn't work for me. It's so off-balance, even when putting big battery packs on the back, it then gets so heavy, plus the awkward neck/head position.

I think one of the best solutions is an Easy Rig. It distributes the weight pretty well, and is a pretty simple invention. I know it's pretty expensive, but you can pick up a used one at a decent price. By the time you spend thousands on multiple shoulder rigs, because you'll go from one to the another, thinking the next one will solve your issues, and by then, you're at the cost of an Easy Rig.

Just my experience/preference.

The ez rig is the one with the candy cane over your head?

Again starting with a clutch is not a bad option it's very good parts in there then what people/rental house usually do wrong is that they only get the clutch and nothing more...
I added and deducted bits and parts from our clutch and I think the setup I got now is pretty ultimate. The last bit to be replaced is the red shoulder pad. I will make a new one that is more comfy and has a slightly longer dowtail and also has the back support screwed on to it. That way I can slide out the shoulder pad and not have anything in the way when moving over to a tripod.

I also built up our viewfinder with some rotoprototype parts and red bits. it's nice adjustable in all ways without taking to much weight or space. Then I rebuilt the red mattbox to fit our rotating and extruding HAWK lenses. I also put on a side handle there so the AC has one more good grip than the top handle to grab the camera when taking it of the shoulder that handle also has a little nato rail thing so the monitor can go on it, same with the top handle. It's all built up so no tools are needed to adjust and everything is natorailed even the viewfinder.

So my advice is to do something similar.

what about with the Camera n Lens?

Funny enough, the best shoulder rig I've tried for a RED EPIC/SCARLET is the Midas Mount rig, but good luck finding one.

I've tried the WC, clutch, Red Rock Micro, edelkrone modulas and the Zacuto, all fall short in a few areas, but that's my opinion.

Why can't Red modify it's Clutch to have the camera balanced on the shoulder like it should be? It's the only thing everyone is after. Right now I can't pay for the Clutch when it's designed like it is.
You also get quite a strange pan and tilt movement when the camera is so far in front of you and your turning axis.

I know this isn't a shoulder mount but now that the price of the Ronin is so cheap, I'd consider that over a shoulder mount.

Ronin is how much?

Are you going to be able to shoot the Ronin without a mounted arm for 5 minutes takes?

Marcos,

You should try Matt Uhry's rig.

I was able to pick up a Vocas shoulder system to test with the Dragon. Most of the test will take place next week, but I've spent about a day with it so far. I've been very pleased as the camera height is much better than the WC system, the cameras height has been minimized and I can place the camera pretty far back onto my shoulders. It's a very compact system that lets you expand out as your needs change. It allows for both 15LW and 19 Studio set-up at the same time. So far- so good. Again, I'll post more after next week.
