Leica M to Leica R lens adaptor could attract only a sort of Leica hardcore freaks that using Epic M and X or recently shipping started Scarlet-X.

- What it is about?

It is a slight update already existing Leica M to Leica R adaptor 22228/500934 was made by Leitz Wezlar that is unfortunately discontinued today.

Also it's difficult to find anyway like a new, unused or even user vintage.

I'm in Vienna, Austria and found one to buy online in LA, California!!!

Only one intervention I did to Leica M to Leica R adaptor 22228/500934 is to change existing top base ring

that I took from one old and almost totally broken Leica R photo camera Leicaflex SL from 60's.

This exchange is a must if you want to swap all Leica R lenses on existing adaptor that was not possible before (!!!???).

- What does it mean Leica M to Leica R adaptor for Epic/Scarlet Leica user?

It means with that adaptor is possible to swap several wide angle Leica R lenses on existing Leica M mount for Epic/Scarlet.

- Why this is so important?

Due to a certain technical difficulties it is possible to mount only a few wide angle Leica M lenses (the list it has to be approved by RED soon),

and the rest possibility are all standard and short tele Leica, Zeiss and Cosina/Voigtlander lenses.

So it means this sort of bout could help Leica hardcore freaks to stay with Leica lenses

and to use all available Leica R lenses with existing Leica M mount for Epic/Scarlet.

Have a look below at several images about the adaptor and also my favorite short wide angle zoom,

a masterpiece Leica Vario Elmar-R 21-35 f/3.5-4.0 ASPH

that is a sort of bridge to the most of wide angle focal lengths that I'm interested in to work.

This tread has intention be an information for RED Users but also would like to make a sort of push to third part lens adaptor makers

to jump, chime in and make one similar adaptor for Epic/Scarlet users.

Would third party adapters like

Fotodiox Lens Mount Leica R Lens to Leica M Adapter

LINK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fotodiox-Adapter-Cosina-Voigtländer-Minolta/dp/B003EAXZAK

be possible to use with the new M Mounts for EPIC/Scarlet coming out? Or would such a mount have to be of a brand new design to be able to work with all R lenses?
All still lens off-the-shelf adapters employ spring fingers to seat the lens against the mount. They are ok in a pinch but allow the lens to flex with any movement unless the lens is supported firmly and separately from underneath. In addition they are extremely weak....not suited for a cinema camera. If there was enough interst here we would make a proper adapter using the same rigid mechanism in our Leica LM/ARC mount for the Epic.

So many awesome options opening up! I received my Canon mount a few days ago and am loving my Leica R 28-70 on it. I'm using a Fotodiox Eos adapter which is good but still leaves a little play. I'm now looking into Leitax adapters. What I really like about these is that they are screwed into the original lens mount and should provide really secure mounting of R lenses to the Canon mount.

well I'm +1 on this,

as long as its a mount that lives on the lens, like the Nikon to Canon etc.

I think the ultimate solution would be a new mount for the camera. It really only takes a minute to change the mount on the camera after the initial shim pack is determined.

Ron, thanks, this also very good idea and the mount already exists (but no any confirmation about RED approval...)

I guess this wouldn't be too bad, only reason I would prefer, personally, the Leica M mount is because a screw on mount onto the actual lens would mean that it would be a quick interchange system between M and R lenses on the Leica M mount...

It would be a similar system to that of the Canon mount people are using for their R glass but in this case your using the best still glass in the world...

If you were to do another mount...aim for doing an S mount ;P I think Ketch and many others would adore that, I would too since the glass is meant to be a step up from M and R lines but its electronic so that would take much much longer and probably really need RED involved...

Long story short, it'd just be nice to switch between M glass and R, especially for the cheaper second hand R on the longer focals and shorter as well as their aperture and sharpness,

Ultimately R for shorter than 35 and M for 50 and up aside from the R 100 Macro which so far seems to be getting a lot of love on these forums and elsewhere, might even cine-mod my 50 Summilux, wouldn't dare touch the noctilux though, scared as hell to cine-mod that
