  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BACKPACK system

Interesting...

Suggestions:
1) sliding-extending battery mount for optimal weight balancing (think extending rifle stock)
2) horizontal Redmote usability (screen menu rotating)
 
The Backpack and Quickplate just arrived. The Assault Pack was not available to ship. The Backpack is light as is the cheeseplate that slides into it. The Quickplate is heavier than I expected. It turns out that it still has the same, heavy, backplate that the original RED battery plate has. It is in under the backplate that slides into the Backpack. Is this part necessary? If so, I suppose I will replace it with the ET plate, which is lighter.

When this rig is on the shoulder all the weight is in the front. As a 1st AC this is a common concern for me to make the camera as balanced as possible on the operators shoulder, especially on shows that are 90% handheld. And once you've got your follow focus, cine tape, etc. it adds up. An Easy Rig would help with something like this, but you can't always use one. If you can get your shoulder and eye around the focus plane and a little more weight towards the back(modules) then you've got a much more comfortable rig that will fatigue the operator much less.

I am blowed away by the beautiful design of this piece. That was also my concern. I am hand held guy . And as longer I carry the weight of the camera on my shoulder, and I use only my hands to control it, I can go all day long. In our R1 hand held rig having rods in the back allows to adjust by distance the red brick to counter balance the weights very accurate regardless the weight of the lens especially zooms (lighter the front shorter the distance) . My main concern is if this new rig allows you to adjust the red brick wieght by distance. Otherwise it will diffucult on the arms to shoot for long periods of time. I am just speculating without trying and Im might been missing something.

Except there is no more spinning drive to deal with anymore and the bomb evf has transformed into something even cooler. I dig it.

you can bolt the 19mm universal mount right on there instead of the 15mm one :)
 
Hey Jarred, are you going to have the EPIC Assault plate for sale without the 15mm rod adapters or is it only a combo deal?

For instance, if we would rather use 19mm and have no desire for 15mm as Ketch suggested, would we still have to buy the pack including the 15mm adapter or is their going to be just the plate by itself in time?

Same question here...
It doesn't make sense (economically and ecologically) to buy something and throw half of it away.
 
This looks great. Lot of thought and problem solving. Functional at every turn.


One thing - Is it possible to not have ASSAULT written on there.
Haven't guns and violence only caused pain and suffering.

Ill black it out, but something to think about.

I can't quite tell from the photos, can you mount the wedge directly to the Epic and then the battery plate to the Wedge without using the backpack?
 
The backpack clearly has 4 screws.

In the one where it's not mounted you can see the holes for the screws, but on the picture where it is mounted, you can see the 4 screws in place, so I would assume you do have to use the screw method.
 
I love the new Backpack system and the whole Quick-release system you guys have built! Also love the new videos on the RED Store - I hope there will be one for the Backpack system too! :-)
