  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

BACKPACK system

Yesss!!!!

Nicely done guys.
The new hardware is really and truly amazing.
Guess it's time to visit the Red store yet again!

Very beautiful and ergonomic, love the system design.

Just curious if this will allow a continuation of the RED MODULE system in a non-linear direction, allowing the stacking process to happen in different directions but maintain connectivity? Could be a cool way to counter balance/tailor to more specific needs; just a thought at least.

Bloody backorder...half my RED world always seems to be on backorder! At least I learnt just get in on day one even if the gear sits in a box till X ships, otherwise it'll be a bare bone EPIC for many many months! Gotta be quick round here!!

I love the direction that is being taken with these accessories and they look badass. Although I would like to express one concern that I see from this configuration, but I understand there is always more to come. The problem I see is balance. When this rig is on the shoulder all the weight is in the front. As a 1st AC this is a common concern for me to make the camera as balanced as possible on the operators shoulder, especially on shows that are 90% handheld. And once you've got your follow focus, cine tape, etc. it adds up. An Easy Rig would help with something like this, but you can't always use one. If you can get your shoulder and eye around the focus plane and a little more weight towards the back(modules) then you've got a much more comfortable rig that will fatigue the operator much less.

Try it before you get nervous. The Clutch system sits high. This one sits low. You'd be surprised how well this balances, especially with the RED Brick on the back.

I almost feel the same way as when I bought the older 300, and the new better looking 300 came out- Except, this is the main complaint I get from DP's- too High, and most opt to go without the front brace, only using the back brace to counter the weight, and natural force of the arms pushing forward.

I love what you did with the mounting plate, now it can really be a quick release, not pulling the camera off one quick release system and having to rebuild the accessories ( Mattebox on rails, FF, etc) At just 100, it's no big deal to just buy the new one.

But the clutch is a different story- it's 4900, to just put aside, and only use the new one.

I would think that eventually RED would offer a shoulder pad like this new one pictured, but instead of tilting the attachments 45 degrees up, a full shoulder curvature, that has the modules, continue in a strait path after the shoulder middle portion, while keeping the camera lower, and able to extend the front of the camera away from the body- the second wish they ask for. At the same time, I would like to still attach the back pad to counter my arms pushing ( naturally falling) forward.

I'm extremely happy with my EPIC, and see ingenuity in the accessory design. Like the NATO rail system for the DSMC Top handle- BRILLIANCE, it allows for extremely fast mounting- Love it. I see a picture of the REDmote being mounted the same way, on the New Handheld system. Sure, I'll buy the attachment to convert the LCD and EVF that way, but after seeing and using the DSMC top handle- I wish that were the new standard for attaching accessories, not having extra bolt on pieces in between. And would buy new ones, and use the ones I have now as back up.

I love to see the program progress, and the direction we are headed. I am fully invested in RED- not just emotionally, but all in. So I'm happy to see all of the improvements.

Couldn't agree with your perspective more. I'd like to better understand Red's end goal and design center target. Are these AKS that are being rolled out in pieces designed as an integrated system to support the gamut from classic feature/narrative/studio configurations in addition to handheld/lightweight DSMC work?

M

well yeah sure. Of course that stuff all exists already. For a good reason. However, I'm not buying your statement that Red already makes all that stuff for Epic. They make all that stuff for Red One, which is a tank compared to Epic's masaratti. If I were to build out a flexible system to cover all the configurations needed using Red One AKS, the AKS would weigh much more than the camera. Epic needs the more traditional form-function support gear just as much as these new DSMC tools. Thats all I''m saying. Obvioulsly these new AKS are very very cool and an entirely different form factor than traditional cinema support equipment. Its innovative and has an agressive design element that most everyone who shoots with Red products appreciates. Myself included.

My question is not that these are cool or not, but what style of shooting are they targeted towards? I'm a top down thinker. See the big picture and flesh out the details. I'm just starting to get what Red's big-picture is for the DSMC line. But I still am curious what Red's big picutre is and where all these are AKS heading.

Right on Jim... I think what certain people may not be understanding here is that you guys are simply presenting us with options.

People keep getting hung up on.... Well this isn't exactly what I want for my exact type of shooting... What if there are modules... What about the clutch I just bought.... People always view things from their own specific perspective. If you zoom out and look at the bigger picture.... it nuts... You start to realize that all of these systems can be combined and the parts can swap between them.

What I am seeing is a crazy and ridiculously modular system that can satisfy everyone if they just use their head, and think smart.

The kicker for me was when I saw the Backpack on the back of the camera... Then mounted on the wedge...

I was at NAB and saw the demos... I must have watched the quick release demo 100 times... I am sold. It just takes a little vision to see past the idea that you are not buying a single product that could be unusable in a year... but instead your buying into system that is limitlessly expandable.

For me, I love the back pack because I have a bunch of red bricks, and I like to keep my setup super small and compact. Everything I have I like to have it fit in a "backpack"... lol. pun...

I may not go for the wedge, I'm just drooling over the removable cheese plate. I may want to bolt something else on there. Who knows what it might be, but I can if I want to. That's the key.

I may or may not get into the module game... But this is nice and light and gives me a solution right now which no on else can provide.

I thank you for that. You guys do nothing but amazing me with this stuff. keep the pedal to the medal!!!

3rd time... EVERYTHING works with EPIC-M. EVERYTHING is the same between EPIC-M and EPIC-X.

Jim

so just to be sure ....all of these work in EPIC M????????

Just wrapped tonight shooting one leg of an 8 part TV show on EPIC and MX. 3 MX and one EPIC and I have to say that this backpack shoulder pad system would be al lifesaver. The EPIC has a very unique feel to it with handheld rifle style shooting and the shoulder mount would have been a perfect option for my style. I dont worry so much about it being front heavy as I put rouges and a clip on mattebox on the camera, I Cant wait to order one!
