Storage is almost as cheap, maybe as cheap, maybe even cheaper, than shipping a few cans of film to and from a lab. And, unlike film, which always increased incrementally in price, storage prices continue to drop.

The "film is as cheap as digital" argument was lost before the first engagement.

No, film isn't dead, but it's like a man overexposed to a lethal dose of radiation; it's just a matter of time.

We did the budget for a film we proposed on both film (what the investors wanted) and on RED. Funny thing is, we were 1/2 the cost with OWNING the RED cameras (not lenses though) with the places that the producer got quotes from. I really had wished that project got the green light...I'd have a Red One at this point

And these days, most every production shot on film still incurs all those same requirements and costs. Lets face it, not much of anything these days doesn't go through some form of DI process or digital mastering for broadcast, DVD, Blu-Ray or even the web.

Since working with RED, I have not come across any project that could be done for the same price when shooting film, let alone cheaper. People can talk all they want about the cost of RAIDs, HDDs, LTO tapes and drives, etc.. Fact is, that stuff is dirt cheap and most "shot on film" productions need much of it themselves.

The thing about the AF100 is that the manufacture of it has caught up to the R&D, therefore yipee it goes on sale. It might even be interesting if it weren't for its sucky 8 bit long gop capture codec. Scarlet on the other hand has a gap between its manufacturing and its R&D and every time that gap seems to narrow it suddenly widens again. I surely hope to god that this trend will end soon and you can finally release it.

Not true. An epic without media still has the ability to be useful via hdsdi, hdmi, or ethernet. There are people who have requested brains only and won't be recording on board.

You can run Epic off AC so battery isn't needed either.

I know the analogy is kind of silly, but I stand by the point. A Scarlet Fixed costs $5750 trying to figure out some “true” cost outside of that is an exercise in futility because everyone’s needs are different. Fair enough to post the total one is going to spend on a particular set up, but not fair enough to insinuate or claim that the base is higher than it is because of it, which I think happens around here a lot.

I deleted my post after I saw that you'd already mentioned the AC-only option. Glad to hear that.

Can you now record directly to a computer via ethernet? I thought all you could do via ethernet was offload from CF/SSD.

One minor correction, the AF100's codec once transcoded to something like Pro Res is no longer Long GOP.

Well O.K, but to keep descriptions accurate, once it's been transcoded to Pro Res it's no longer the AF100 codec.

The key issue is once you have used LOG GOP 8-bit 4:2:0 on your source footage the damage has been done...

I'm just a lowly college student hoping to get a lick of the professional camera salt block. I knew I was going to have to save my hard earned cash a long time to get the $4750 needed for just the fixed Scarlet, but now I feel like I'm just some idiot chasing a dollar bill on a fishing line... right into a big cactus.... What happened to 3k for $3k?

You guys just need to slow down before there's nothing left to distinguish the scarlet from the epic. (okay okay I exaggerate, but I'm still sad!)

I too am a college student shooting primarily on an XH-A1 and a 7D. I really have a great deal of nostalgia for both of these cameras...I like the sharp, raw look of the A1 (even if its because of noise and a tiny sensor) and the softness of the 7D (even if its because its real resolution is way below 1080p).

But hell, I'm sick of both of them and will do just about anything to get my hands on a RED camera.

And taxes aside (lol), its true that times sure are better for a poor college student now than a few decades ago. I mean, the Bolex is a nice toy, but want to try and shoot a feature on it??

The fixed Scarlet kit is only going up $1,000 to $5,750.

That's still twice the original estimated $3k price.

Now, for the 'pro' end of the 'prosumer' market, that's not a big deal; the extra features should make up for the cost and if you're actually using it to make money then you'll pay it off pretty quickly. But at that price RED have lost the 'sumer' end of the 'prosumer' market.

To the extent that I'm not really sure what market niche the fixed Scarlet is supposed to fit into anymore? I'd imagine it will just eat into their sales of higher priced cameras to the pro markets while bringing in few new users.
