  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Attitude adjustment...

one day before RED 1 was $ 25,000. Now with that money you can buy 6 cameras. I don't want to talk about other cameras of RED and poke at those owners. Enough is already done. Is this true? Is this really happening? I don't think it is a Joke. One thing is sure...in this world nothing is permanent. everything will change..what you are now is not same after few seconds and you never will be that again. Then what can RED do? it has to change...change is law of the nature...every one who wants to survive has to change....

This might be a bit cheeky so please dont yell at me haha

If the Red one has now dropped to $4k and that has 120fps at 2K

Surely Scarlet users will be getting a firmware upgrade soon for 120fps at 3K/2K haha

Cheeky but doable?

Right?

;)

On this day, film finally was able to retire. If not before then now for sure. With some exceptions, every motion format from 16mm to 5-perf 65mm can now take a well-deserved bow.

"Film deserves to go to the retirement home being proud of its successor." - Jim Jannard (here).

You don't know how much I loathe saying this. But this was the year in which film could make one, final breakthrough, whether for still or motion. I was even considering buying an Aaton A-Minima. For film to flourish, it needs to be as cheap as Scotch tape. God, if it were, people would be dumping their HD cameras on eBay like flies on a kid who crapped in his shorts on the hottest day of the year.

For stills, of course, film makes a lot of sense if you're shooting 6x4.5 and larger. I ordered a Lomography Belair which can do 6x6, 6x9 and 6x12. For about $200 including two lenses. If I don't like it, I can't lose. FWIW I did a shoot a couple of days ago with a Sony NEX (I am not a full time photographer, though, just so you know). My Nikon D700 is the last DSLR I ever buy. Things have changed for the better, at least within the digital realm.

Hey man, settle down there, I'll just repeat what the others are saying here... "Come on man, like you didn't see this coming" or "don't you know the price of electronics drops as soon as you buy it" or just move along no room for dissenters" pick one, because that's all you'll get pal.
That is unfair. Try to help the guy instead of dismissing him. Is that unreasonable?

Jim, Jarred, and all the rest of you guys - you're all nuts! And I love it! :)

Thanks for making our plans to purchase another EPIC SO much realer! RED is such an unusual, customer-oriented, forward-thinking, fun company, great to be part of the family..

For every one guy who complains due to his self-centered interests, there are 25 guys whose dreams just got a little closer to coming true.
You are underestimating ;-) 1 per 100 is my guess after reading the boards :P here and out there :-)

People have false expectations about camera prices, because the whole game has been rigged for decades, by companies like Sony, Canon, and Pansonic. Sony always floated their overpriced cameras by suppressing technology in lower-priced cameras. Or with Canon, they slowly trickle out technology, just enough to force people to buy the next model. It's all rigged and manipulated. What Red is doing is closer to the high-end PC market, where fast-moving technology dictates the pace and price of changes more directly.

Last Fall, I built an awesome $10K editing PC. I needed it to edit my film. The day it arrived at my house, it dropped in value by 30%. Six months later, I could not sell it on ebay for half the price I paid for it. Did you see me going onto PC forums and complaining? No, I understand how fast technology changes. I needed the computer.. I bought it, and used it successfully. The attitude adjustment that people need, IMO, is adjusting from the phony, inflated, manipulated camera-pricing markets of the past to this new model that Jim and his team are pioneering. Think of an Epic as a small supercomputer with a PL mount strapped to it. Once you do that, things will make much more sense.

So 530 posts later, the EPIC-X still costs $19.000.
Lets move on and get some Dragon updates!
Wohoo!

Robbing cinematographers of the choice to shoot their projects on film is not an advantage; it's a loss. Film was just another choice. It's still valid for many projects, but becoming less and less viable as time goes on. Though... there are a handful who have the wherewithal to demand 65mm, like J.J. Abrams on the upcoming Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Same thing with digital formats. Killing Canon, Sony, and Arri overnight will not make the world a better place; it'll just mean future options. Choices are good, whether you want a GoPro or 65mm film.

I'm conflicted because I like price drop. But I liked renting the camera aside of my skills too, it was a great bonus at the end of the day. Now it will be dearly missed.
What bothers me more is that new buyers will have a Meizler + Epic, for less than the old price of an Epic.

If Red could do a price drop on Meizler for early adopters of M and Stage X... I mean, it goes out from the same facilities...

Holy. Holy. Wow. Thank you so much for the message, sir. I was yelling at the comment, and woke up my girl. She laughed after I finished dancing around though. "Com'on Eryc, go to bed." What? How can I sleep now? Impossible.

Thank you for the kind words, sir. This is the most awesome night ever! I will see you, and Jarred, at RED soon. Promise. And I won't be too shy to introduce myself this time. :) Filmmaking has been with me for a long time now, and ...... there's just too much to explain. USC. A lot of PAIN. A lot of working in thankless environments...not that others haven't endured worse, but this has just been a long road and I feel like I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Screenshot of your comment and posting it to my FB. Hope you don't mind. :) :)

This represents a dream come true. No joke...no maudlin nonsense. No sycophantic stuff. Just immense appreciation.

cool :)

I have been reading other forums also Emanuel, i think it would warm Jim's heart to know a lot are starting to ask real questions about red camera's.
Surfs up guys looks like a big wave coming

Peter... I am not really so smart. We try really hard to put ourselves in the position of our customer and weigh that along with our situation and the state of the market.

We make the best call we can given everything we know.

Some will be happy. Some will not. But it isn't for the lack of us trying.

I love this industry and have a special affinity to the young and up coming shooters. We try so hard to make everything work. But there is no magic wand except making the best camera we can and selling it for the best price we can given our costs.

This is easy stuff to understand but difficult to execute.

Jim
No, you are smart. But also 'cause you understand where the history of this business is. And you're making it against the usual interests of people interested to make money within.

Moreover, you make money with your REDvolution. Respect.

I lost a lot of respect for RED for devaluing my EPIC by almost half in one day. In fact I would say that I lost all respect.

So you, Jon, did not just lose "a lot of respect for RED" but "lost all respect" -- wow. Just WOW.

How differently you and I look at this is just WOW. In my case, RED & c/o have never gained so much respect as of now, (and I'm known to be a very picky person).

I notice those complaining and keen to stop anybody else getting their hands on the technology actually all seem to have had a really succesful time with their cameras, made loads of money with them, written the asset off against tax, and are now feeling hard done by because they won't be able to make as much money by selling off their depreciated asset.

My heart is bleeding.

It's funny how it's often those who are doing just great are those who are the loudest whiners, the first to suggest others shouldn't be allowed in, the people who are pulling up the ladder after them. I think there's a lot of this going on in the world generally and I don't just mean in relation to cameras.

Suffice to say I'm not impressed.

love

Freya

If there are more RED cameras out there for a cheaper, it can also mean more productions might be willing to use EPICs, hence more rental days for us owners (that works with more cameras than the just the Epic)
