  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

MX False Color?

Maybe I'm not explaining it correctly.

On the M sensor when false color is activated, I'm able to see a red posterize in blown highlights. With the MX when this feature is activated, nothing really happens. I see what seems to be blue edges.

You are looking at the focus assist mode in which things in focus have blue edges (used to be red edges). That mode is indicated at the top of the monitor by Fv symbol. What you want is the exposure setting which will show the Ev symbol. This is a black and white setting in which overexposure will show up as red noise and under exposure will show up as purple noise. This meter reflects the raw image.
Alternately you can use false color (Fv), which has the multi-colored predator vision that you are probably used to from previous builds. I don't like using it because it reflects the LUT you are looking at rather than the raw image. Thus metering at 800 iso will show clipping when the image is in fact not clipping at 320 iso.

Ivan, you have COLOR set to Focus (Edge Highlight), you want it set to Exposure.

There are two modes now for false color + the exposure overlay.
One is marked as "video"

That's probably the one you're looking for.

Ivan, you have to cycle through the false color options now with multiple button presses. It no longer just on/off. There's the new exposure false color mode (only shows red for highlights and purple for lowlights) denoted by √E as well as the focus assist mode (edging in blue) denoted by √F and finally the traditional false color mode denoted by √V. After that it cycles back to regular view mode.

Would someone please tell me the reason for having the "video" FC mode any more? It seems like it gives you no useful info since it won't tell you what's truly clipped and where things are laying in the exposure. I would love to have it back to a useful state because it was one of the best tools for exposure to me (knowing how close some things were to clipping and what not.)

Popular demand?

The FC makes a lot less sense on the MX than the M.

I am a foolheartedly retro guy, and really wish for the waveform to be restored into a usefull tool...

I don't know why, it's still best to push the highlights as far as possible so your shadows are not too noisy. I like knowing in the RAW when my highlights are a few clicks away from blow so I know if I can recover the blue in the sky and what not.

Hey guys to add to Ivans question... Can some one give me a step by step to get the proper false color setting up? I'd like to try this out on a shoot on Monday. I need the false color that will display the clipping in the RAW...
