  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Attaching RED's Pro Matte Box to a Rod System?

The way I remember it, Jarred indicated long ago that the matte box would have more added to it as time went on, beginning with the french flag, then wings and cage, and eventually a rail-mounting alternative, rotating stages, swing away option, etc. These are just some of the things that were mentioned in threads about the RMB. Nothing more has been said about it since, but it certainly seemed clear that a rail-mount would be forthcoming.

Clip-on functionality appears to come from a tension ring that is clamped into place on the matte box and clamps onto the lens barrel exterior directly with differently sized tension rings, depending on the lens used.

Clip-on functionality comes from a threaded ring that is clamped into place on the matte box and screws into the lens via threads on the inside of the lens barrel.

RED Pro MB included: 110mm, 114mm, and 142mm Clip-on rings, You can directly attach to the front lens barrel Using a quick-lock mounting system (no Screws/ Thread).

Note: For (lenes) smaller than 110mm (diameter Outside) ring, you can use Chrosziel 110- (Required)mm screw Step Down.

Hi Ryan

The Red Matte box does not clip on to the lens even though it is called a clip on matte box.

The plastic rings rotate and "lock" into the matte box. there is a knob on the matte box which holds the rings, when the knob is turned it tightens around the plastic ring around the lens and holds the matte box securely to the front of the lens barrel.

We have been using a Red matte box with RPP and RPZ for over six months and are happy with is's performance. it is very light weight and works great for handheld work or if you are working off a light weight tripod like a OConner 1030.

Some of the main things to be aware of are

1. No Rotating filter Stage for liner polo filters.
2. Only two stages.
3. Only 110mm, 114mm and 142mm rings for RED lens
4. At the current time no rail support, so if the lens is not 110mm, 114mm or 142mm you are out of luck using the matte box.
5. Only 4×5.6 so even when rod support is available will not work with large lens like 45-250 or 24-290

Over all a great light weight matte box ideal for handheld work or small crew, fast moving d documentary work that is a fraction of the weight of an metal Arri matte box.

4. At the current time no rail support, so if the lens is not 110mm, 114mm or 142mm you are out of luck using the matte box.

Hey Craig;
Successfully, I'm using Chrosziel 110- (Required)mm screw Step Down with Red Pro MB

Hi Kwan

Hey Craig;
Successfully, I'm using Chrosziel 110- (Required)mm screw Step Down with Red Pro MB

Great to know, thanks for the info I will check it out.

Thanks for the replies. It's a bummer that it isn't compatible with smaller lenses (I'm using Zeiss ZE for now). Buying step down rings for each lens would be a little ridiculous. But the clip on function sounds really great for steadicam work. Does anyone know how much it weighs?

We'll be using this for our up-coming Matt Box. If there's enough interest I could get some out sooner than originally planed. It is 142 outer diameter to attach the Matt Box and 114mm diameter inside. It has 15mm rod mount. There is a bracket to convert to 19mm or 15mm studio.

Is there any way to attach RED's Pro Matte Box to a rod system?

So, if I understand correctly, the cage on RED's Pro Matte Box wraps around this, and this is on rails?

Does any one know if there is any date set for this or if there will be a red "donut" coming any time soon?

Or what about the swing away...

our new lenses has spinning front barrels... which kind of puts both the Arri LMB15 and the Red mattbox on the shelf. I want to improve the red mattbox preferably with a swing gate thing and some donuts that lock into the same place as the plastic rings for the clip on. or maybe even nicer to loose th clip on all together and have the whole back plate replaced with a rubber donut thingy.

Any news on this will be great I can hold out during the summer then we need to buy something...
