Hey EPIC Users,

We have created a setup video for best practises when using the Blade and EPIC. We will do more over time when I get the EPIC back in the office again.

http://vimeo.com/75928189

Released recently is new firmware that will help out when using the EPIC. We have changed the way it does file naming during recording. Once you have installed the latest AtomOS for your device.

To get an exact match with the Red filename:

- The camera must be set to TOD.

- RED camera trigger must be used. Set this in the timecode page.

- On the File Naming page, enable RED One/EPIC under source.

- The record button on the RED camera must be used to start and stop all recordings.

Exact file naming only works correctly if you hit record on the EPIC and stop on the EPIC. If you press record on our device either before or during when file naming is active you will run into issues.

This is such great news!!!!!
Thanks for getting this update out!

Just wondering: in the video you're setting the epic to EDGE and not TOD TC,
whereas above you state it has to be TOD?

Or did I get something wrong?

Hope I can test it with my scarlet soon!

I run this with my EPIC and its the absolute BOMB addition to my camera for the work i do on NFL sports.

Do you conform back to the R3Ds for final output, or just use the Blade files for editing and output? Thanks!

Hi Brooke

Couple of questions from the video.

The Red SDI record flag isn't dependent on the mode of timecode as far as I know, so TOD or EDGE should BOTH work fine in terms of triggering the Blade to record??

However, EDGE should probably be avoided because on the Red it resets after every mag change, and would therefore often have duplicate timecodes, although the clipnames would still be unique.

Is my understanding correct?

Cheers.

Just so I understand. Is it only possible to trigger the auto record with the epic record button? As when we used the PIX240i it worked fine to trigger with external triggering for the epic. Is that not posisble with the Blade?

Another question is there a Blade V mount plate or such so it can run of a Vmount battery ?

Edit: One more question, does the triggering work trough a teradek bolt?

If I remember it right, all AtomOS recorders do not have external power input, you have to use "dummy battery" for that. But it accepts anything between 7 and 18 volts DC. So yes, you can power it from camera/v-lock.

There is also small HDMI-SDI (and vice versa) converters to attach between recorder and battery. Got it's own tiny battery and a flashlight ;) in case of power loss. Actually drives Ninja2 for about 30min without any battery attached at all...

BTW: Anyone tried out Ninja2 with R1 HDMI output? Will it get the time code and rec trigger? I'm just too lazy today to dig up the cases and try :)
EDIT: This doesn't work. I wonder about Samurai Blade - will it?

I really would like somebody to make a unit that was really solid and had a blade (or pix240i) a Vlock plate and a compartment for Wireless reciver.
Basically as small solid box with a screen that can run pretty much all day and be tossed around between director / client etc.

Does anybody use the new firmware already and would like to share some first experiences?

In particular: does the file naming and relinking work flawlessly?
Are there any glitches when doing takes longer than 15 minutes?

Thanks in advance!!

The onboard battery on there will actually last most of the day. Adding a V-mount will make this unit not very portable. Remember, you can keep the unit running with powering down because it has two battery slots that can be changed while running.

that is way better than my Samurai, a must for me!!!!!

Then the bolt als sucks power...

Hi Sebastian,

We recorded that before we released the firmware to enhance and match RED file naming. Use Time of Day if you wish to match RED and our file names together.

Thanks Sebastian.

Hi Eric,

That's correct, either will trigger via SDI, it's only if you wish to conform or sync the clips from the RED and our devices using the same files name, use TOD. I'm trying to get my hands on an EPIC so I can do a new one with the updated firmware.

The firmware release notes are more current than the video. I recommend all RED uses update when possible.

Thanks Eric.

Hi Björn,

You can press record and trigger from our devices however, we have found that most RED users prefer to have the same file names as recorded on the RED. The new firmware will allow users to make sure that the names are now the same, so it is easier when editing with our ProPres files, then replacing with the RED files on file output.

If you don't require matching file naming, then by all means record trigger from the Blade or Samurai.

Thanks Björn,

Hell yeah, don't spend time writing about it, just go and get one!

If you look at the video, the screen res is much better than the RED display, I noticed it straight away when I set them both up. It's set to Rec. 709 and we are just about to release the Atomos Spyder to on set calibration with the Blade.

Focus peaking and WFM is so awesome on the Blade display.

Thanks for the clarification Brooke!
Will try it out soon!

Hey Brooke!

I am on a RED MX and have just got my Blade, I cant seem to get the file naming to work, does it not work for RED ONE?

But is it possible to "auto record" from epic trough Terradek Bolt onto the Blade, and get the file names etc?
