  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Atomos Samurai Blade and RED EPIC setup video

Hey Brooke!

I am on a RED MX and have just got my Blade, I cant seem to get the file naming to work, does it not work for RED ONE?

Hey Ajay,

We haven't heard of any issues with RED One file naming.

Try this and let me know:

1. Format your drive using the Atomos device
2. Go to Menu > Timecode > Camera Trigger > RED Epic
3. In the Timecode Menu change source to Time of Day.
4. Go back to the Menu then File Naming
5. Source > RED One/Epic
6. You should see that on the bottom of that screen, the File Name should update to the name that the RED is outputting.

Do a couple of test records, remembering to only trigger record from the RED One and not the Atomos device.

Let me know how you go.

Cheers,

But is it possible to "auto record" from epic trough Terradek Bolt onto the Blade, and get the file names etc?

We are good friends with the guys at Teradek and their products are great.

I'm not sure if we can be 100% certain what information the Teradek Bolt is passing through.

As a suggestion, could the chain go EPIC > Blade > Teradek Bolt. Then file naming will work. We support loop out from our device.

What are your thoughts Björn?

Yeah, in and out. And plug a Atomos Connect on the battery slot and you can do HDMI in or out depending on which version you get.

Ajay,

Filename works on Bolt & RED, but you must have the latest firmware update on your Bolt system to pass it. Did you get it from us? If not, shoot me an email: Mike [at] Teradek [dot] com.

Thanks Mike for that update. Do you know if you can put our device at the end of the chain then and file names are received correctly?

I'm designing the booth for InterBEE and it will be interesting to see the Teradek studio in the centre of our booth, maybe we will have to use this as a case study for the expo.

Hi Predro,

I haven't used a scarlet, so I can't comment if the setup is the same. Have you done a quick search in the forums about clean out to a monitor? The main thing to note is to have the internal base frame rate the same as the external frame rate.

Brooke,
I just purchased a Blade yesterday and it's better then I could have hoped for getting pro res files immediately. One question, you say that with using Red file naming if you hit record from the device you will have problems. We need to shoot some 60 fps shots during our shoot, I figured the only way to get those to the Blade is through playback off the Epic, which I'll need to hit the record on the Blade to accomplish this. Is this going to mess up the file naming for all the 23.98 shots, which is the majority of our footage?
Thanks for the help,

Steve just be aware that when you playback on the Epic I'm pretty sure the SDI is half de-bayer, it's a full de-bayer during recording though.

Adrian, So you're saying that the quality of my high speed playback will not be as good a quality as my 24 fps live recording?

Hi Steve,

Glad you are happy with the Blade.

I'm not sure if you can pick up the file names of currently recorded media on your RED mag, I haven't personally tried.

Adrian may be onto something as RED raw files are very intensive and even on a fast computer it doesn't play nicely at full res. This is why RED users use the Atomos ProRes recordings for offline edits.

Make sure under the brain settings that the output frequency matches your recorded media to be on the safe side.

For future recording, record on the RED and the Blade and you should be fine. :)

Thanks Steve.

Brooke,
Not sure I understand…..I'm going to record the HS playback on the Blade. Am I not getting the same res as I'm getting recording 23.98 off the live recording? If not what is the res equivalent to? Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

It's the same as going from red cine to HD with half debayer... As it works when in playback on camera it's only every second pixel that is used for the downsampled SDI OUT image, where as when looking at the recorded stream going trough the camera you get all the pixels / full debayer. So you could run into problems with moare and such but I think the chance is pretty slim when you highspeed footage as it's usually pretty soft any way.

Will the combination Atomos Samurai Blade and Red Epic Dragon be frame accurate? I am able to borrow one, to try out an offline workflow with my Red Epic Dragon, but when I tried it out, the conform was not perfect, it was some frames off. Is this suppose to happen? Will I have to manually "sync" it? If I have to, I do not see the point of using this, except when you are finishing the project also with the footage from the Blade.

One little feature request...for me these record start stop things never could be I´m triggering the camera trough the ctl port, could be that the bolt is not letting the trigger though but some times it does work but 99% of the times, well it does not.

A long time ago I made my own recorder and my way of triggering was to move a little color picker on the screen, simply placing it where the red rec light blip comes up in the upper right corner.. when the color picker got "recording red light" then it started to record, and when the light when off it stopped... I then got little proxies with interface gui on the screen which is fine for video village and all the rest.

Please implement such and I might just buy one of your recorders. :)

Would be a cool upgrade for the old MX sensor cameras, to change them over to internal ProRes internal XQ 4444 5k resolution. But, then again, most modern computers can natively cut R3D codec

I have no problems natively cutting R3D, but it would for sure be great to have the opportunity to go straight to proxies sometimes. Will not buy the recorder this time.
