  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Atomos Samurai and Scarlett-X - VOTE HERE!

keep in mind that Epic (and presumably Scarlet) CURRENTLY CAN NOT PUSH OUT AN EDGE TO EDGE 1080 IMAGE. So if your client wants prores now, you will be delivering footage with black borders on some/all the edges of your footage. this makes any offboard recording as a new master dead in the water.
again, all current 5k resolutions are not 16x9 and the 4khd spits out 1080p but with a small black border around it.

this, of course is subject to change- one firmware update and this can go away. bring back 4k16x9 in addition to 4khd and I think problem will be solved.

Thanks Nate, I'm hoping both Red and Atomos will be listening to this thread as it will make the Scarlett-X a more achievable option for quite a few customers I suspect.

Or better yet, perhaps Red could add an option for internal recording format 1080p, 10 bit codec (such as pro res). Scaled, not crop of course. I, for one, would be ecstatic if they added this.

This would be incredible.

Heard back from Atomos today, here's an update!

New Update:

Dear Adam,

Thank you for your email regarding compatibility with the RED EPIC or Scarlett camcorders.

At the moment we are in talks with RED about how the Ninja / Samurai can work with the Red EPIC / Scarlett Camcorders.

We have no news to offer at the moment but when we do we will announce this on our website: www.atomos.com and send out emails to all our registered users.

If you have not registered please do so for news updates and an extended warranty: http://www.atomos.com/registration.xml

I will see if we can get someone to post on your forum thread and will look there o see how you get on. We appreciate your support :)

Once PLAYBACK is turned on in the EPIC... My multiple orders for the Samurai will be terminated. I may still get one or two for painful clients to play with... but really.? I think in camera PLAYBACK will suffice. It did with the REDONE, it will with the EPIC. ... And If I need to remember a shot, I video the playback screen using my Iphone. :)))

1080p unscaled 10bit or at least a workable atmos solution would be great to use the cam for more cases.

According to Phil Holland the closest to 16 x 9 broadcast, is the QHD setting on Epic /Scarlet X . I assume most who are considering this workflow will be using it for broadcast or web. If web it doesn't matter with on screen cropping just mask it out . With broadcast, if the cropping is minimal, you should be able to enlarge the image say 1 or 5% to remove the crop lines without serious degradation in the image. Obviously it would be preferable to have no crops, but this could be a possible work around until a update. So 2 questions to ponder.....

1)How bad is the cropping @ QHD thru HDMI output?

2) If PIX 220 reckon currently they can get clean out thru current internal camera settings without cropping. What are those settings because those settings reside internally in the camera & would equally be applicable to Atomos?

Myself I'll be recording as much as possible to SSD. But having spent years in broadcast I can understand the attraction of this workflow for many. I also believe this is a key important difference between the Epic market & the Scarlet market & to be fair most probably hasn't even been on the radar till fairly recently.

Got my Samurai two days ago, hooked it up to the Red One, turned clean output on in menu, turned TC output on and away we went........all worked fine recorded same TC as RAW file.
Only thing was i had to roll the Samurai myself......so what.....!
FCP loved it all, no issues at all...........really good little unit.
By the sounds of it Atomos are talking with RED about the EPIC's issues and triggering rec issues etc.........so as far as i see it it going to get better & better.......fingers crossed

Hey Paul,

Thanks a bunch for the feedback on this! Were you able to record the flat RAW image out to the Samurai?

see for me, if i have a client who is going to pay for the storage and the extra time in post for awesome projects, I.E. Commercials or music videos or Short films to festivals, 4k is hands down what i want. But since i sold my 5d mark ii and only have scarlet cam now, there will be times when i pick up the occasional project for under 1k budget where they dont deserve the quality and extra time for post work, just want something i can turn around fast and not worry about quality, then the atomos would be my option for that. quick easy media for quick turnaround to lower end jobs since i dont have a secondary camera. Id say its a good tool given the right circumstance and job and client budget.

What I want to know is, can Samurai introduce the 'matched - clip name recording' like the Pix240 as a firmware update and hopefully they'll sell like hot cakes for both Epic and Scarlett-X?

Chime in, let's get this happening! :-)

I am in on this, and would buy a Samurai with this option for certain projects.

One answer could be: Person A calls me from the US (Im in Aus) and says we need some B roll of location X or we need you to shoot an interview with Mr Y. We need 1080P @ 24fps in either prores or DNxHD. Now, the question I have is why do I want to go through the RAW workflow that costs me time = money, when I can avoid that whole step?

My question though is what is baked in if you go through to Samurai etc - Is the camera delivering a LUT'd rc709 signal from the HD-SDI?

You could get either a REC709 compliant redgamma2, or a very grading friendly RedLogFilm out the SDI.
If you are going DTF (Direct To Finnish), you probably would like to make the image a bit more saturated and contrasty.
Fortunately, those controls are at hand in the camera.

I can see a lot of uses for these kind of workflows. RED does not promote this way of thinking, but I can see absolutely no downside by having this option, too.

I am all for futureproofing my "huge arty stuff", but even though I have left quick-turnaround-commercial-production, I would still love the Scarlet over a 7D for those kind of situations.

In my case, I think I'd mostly still shoot RedlogFilm, as I rarely do anything that doesn't go througfh a grade of sorts.
redlogFilm is much more flexible to grade and carries a lot more DR, than REC 709, and the finnishing is as fast, if you're doing a grade anyway.
But that is the stuff you can find out.

Get the advantages of an Alexa or an F3 too on a scarlet.

Just smart, if you are in those markets methinks

Cheers!

I know the Atomos guys and they're top-notch. They started talking to Red at NAB about record flags from the Red One. On Epic I'd say it's not if but when. Certainly a Scarlet with a Samurai will cost and weigh less than an Alexa with a Codex. Both will give you ProRes and RAW.

Yes, agreed. The "Professional" has many modes, its not always the highest end of the spectrum. Most of the production world lives in a fast turnaround (budget dictated) environment, and the last degree of quality possible is not needed, or wanted if it cost more time, money or data storage space. And as Professionals.... we still want to use the tools we like to use (Epic or Scarlet) rather then switching over to a 7d, ex1, etc, when the project has lessor requirements.

Recording choices should be part of a Professional camera program. This thread (and others) point to how many Professionals are trying to find the "work around" with after market recording products, with the flaws/issues inherent in hanging these recorders off the Red camera products. Hanging an on-board recorder (work around) is not exactly professional for a few good reasons..... but a built-into-the-system module option would not only be "professional"....... this would immediately change the game in a big way!

Well if you record with the Samurai, you'll probably either be going to 1080p finish (probably always best to revert back to the RAW then convert down instead of going straight but each to their own) or you want to speed up your workflow,

On another thread, the idea was posed that the Atomos gear could be used to easily increase the speed of the workflow, instead of working with RAW from start to finish,

You would start editing with the Atomos and then convert back up to RAW for grading, prior that I believe adjusting metadata etc. in RC-X, white balance etc. then going to color will be an effective workflow,

all for doing RAW the entire way through but sometimes on the road, being able to edit on your laptop of choice, whether it be Apple or whatever, it'd be nice to have real time and the knowledge that when you get back to your base with that mammoth of a super computer you can return to RAW...

I'm all for finishing in RAW, just the great thing is the options in which one can start the workflow....this method is awesome for those of us who are constantly travelling and more so if/when Macbook Pros get updated with cuda able graphics....add graphics etc. work at full res of 1080p then go home and work with graphics etc. your rocket and your tesla at full 4K or 1/2.

Those that need fast turn arounds also will like to get to the grading period the quickest and easiest way too im sure...

Can't wait for them to get the file names...just ordered my atomos today
