Here it is! This years official after movie! My most anticipated film each year from the best multiple day event of the year! H2Oi just feels like home for me. It really does not get better than the few days we spend down there each year and its because of not only all my friends but a ton of you guys being there as well, so thank you for that. This year I decided to switch things up a bit and rent out a set of Atlas Orion Anamorphic lens to play around with. I love the vibe they brought to this after movie and to Ocean City's sites and sounds. This was also my first H2Oi with my Red so I took advantage of my new slow mo capabilities to the fullest extent. Thank you guys so much for watching and I hope you enjoy this years 1 hour long After Movie!

It's an odd test for anas as vinjeting / focus falloff towards the edges is a big thing to look for as well as lens distortion. All difficult to judge if shooting against a black background without vertical or horizontal lines. But I guess they look more for color rendition in the given light, then pitch black surrounding is a good thing.

Bjorn,

Yeah, I guess this was maybe just a skin tones and color accuracy testing of the lenses.

Hi

We had a demo set of these lenses in the other day and even though I was blown away by their material value I was left wondering. The 65 and 100 where full of charector and really easy to put to work and and bit of a steal.... however the 40mm was a mess. I took to my lens guy and felt (lots of ana experience) that it was not setup correctly. Even throwing out the back focus on the projector and then refocusing the barrle made some small improvement (really not sure i understand why?)

So my question... do any of you have a 40mm as easy to use (or even as good) as the 65 and 100?... I am down for a set with a dealer very soon but I would struggle to work with the 40mm if that is how it is!?

Now before anyone suggests that is just what anamorphics are like I do understand the subjective nature of ana character.. and don't expect T2 sharpness or even lens to lens consitancy seen in modern spherical primes... I have a very particular SF Cooke ANA on my monstro at the min and it is full of interesting aberations and lots of very usable fun...

for one thing The 40mm we quickly looked at just doesn't seem to make any atempt to bring the different wavelengths into focus anywhere near each other....now the axial CA was predictably all over the place on all the lenses but nothing seemed right about 40mm...

Hopefull it had been droped or something? What are others looking at with their 40s..? is it the worst of the 3 current lenses?

Your 40mm sounds like it might have been whacked or "reshimmed" by someone who doesn't understand how these lenses are back focused.

Can you bring it in to our Burbank shop or have it sent in to us ? That's just not how it should be.

as for adjusting the back focus and then refocusing - yep - that means your back focus is not set right.

If your camera's back focus is not set right, or the lens is not set right, you will get the same results.

We collimate people's DSMC1/2 cameras for free at our Burbank shop using a Denz FDC - THE standard for setting back focus on a lens mount correctly.

The wide lenses are more sensitive to correct back focus - a 40mm is a 20mm horizontally, so that's something to consider when thinking about wides and collimation.

In any case - please send or bring in that lens, or let whoever owns it know they can/should do that.

thanks!

info@atlaslensco.com is best for setting up a checkup / collimation.

Hi Dan

Thanks for responding. Unfortunately I am in London. It definitely wasn’t just back focus as we could compensate for this on the projector and it still was not right (but it was a little better). I am glad you think it was definitely ‘wrong and def fixable’... I am going to switch to PM if you don’t mind as this is probably not of much interest to anyone else.

Thanks

Ps I still would love a confirmation from other Atlas owners that they have good 40mm examples.

Hi Michael,
My 40mm has been on a camera chart and reviewed by a leading rental house in Toronto. We are quite impressed.

Will be shooting with it soon.
