  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Atlas Lens Co. - Orion Series 2X Anamorphic Prime Lenses

There’s a lot going on in that test video, and he doesn’t have his setup correct in terms of post...

I would urge anyone on the fence to see the lenses in person either at our December demo event or at a rental house or something...

Also, an F2 lens at F2 with an anamorphic adapter on the front is not T2...

Not sure what his T Stop would be , but it’s definitely far from a T2 ;)

Have shot extensively on the Atlas lenses since summer and these lenses are not soft. Yes they bloom a little more at T2 but not unexpected for this stop on anamorphic. Beautiful lenses.

"Lenti ANAMORFICHE Atlas serie ORION con il DoP Alessandro Zonin"

From YouTube...

Well Ill never be able to buy a whole set. But if you could buy only one lens which one would it be? Which one is the workhouse of these sets?
Something versatile like a 50mm on FF camera. So indoors in small rooms, but also close minimum focus distance without weird distortion.

Also would be putting it up for rental. Wonder if they would rent out much to make some money back on em.

They rent fairly inexpensively if you are in a good sized market. If I was gonna buy only one it might be the 65, although I haven't seen the 50...

Thanks Jake! Love your work, I saw bomb city once :) Great job. Stuck with me for a while.

Most of "Chinatown" was shot on a 40mm anamorphic lens, as were most of Wes Anderson's anamorphic movies like "Rushmore" and "The Royal Tenenbaums". And a lot of "Raiders of the Lost Ark". It's a bit wide-angle for close-ups though (it would be a bit like shooting a whole movie on a 21mm to 25mm spherical lens -- as a frame of reference, Wes Anderson shot most of "Bottle Rocket" on a 27mm spherical lens), I'd probably want to carry the 65mm anamorphic as well for those.

Just keep in mind that a 40mm anamorphic is basically like a 20mm horizontally and a 40mm vertically.

A 50mm on a full-frame camera is like a 35mm on a 35mm cine camera.

I'm wondering which productions have used both anamorphic and spherical lens interspersed on the same project?

Check out the TV Series "Vikings" especially the episodes shot by the amazingly talented PJ Dillon. While the show is mainly spherical he occasionally uses anamorphic. I read somewhere he used the anamorphic glass for shots with a special emotional context. Its amazing how well it cuts in and it took me a while before I spotted what he was doing.

Argo was shot half and half, the LA stuff was on anas, and the rest was spherical.

Since DI’s, there have been quite a few movies that have mixed anamorphic and spherical. Some for actual changes in look and aspect ratio, like “Grand Budapest Hotel”, others just because it was sometimes easier to use a spherical lens.

Adding to the mixed format anamorphic + spherical discussion :

“American Gods” (season 1) and I think season 2 (which btw used Atlas)

“Westworld” Season 2

I think “Overlord” did (just watched in the theatre about a month ago - wild one)
