  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ARRI 4K Super 35 Camera Will be Launched Next Month

Even if it were “just a 4.6k ALEVIII” it’d dominate.

And yeah, Arri saying 17 probably means +/- 8+ stops of useable/recoverable/colour accurate DR, and likely capturing at least 20+ decent stops (not missing channels, rebuilt, weird casts, or anything.)

Liking that they cut the difference in size between “Mini” and “Regular” versions for the base model; it looks similar to Venice. Still hope they come out with a half-sized “Tiny”/~3.2lbs version, but 6.4lbs isn’t bad (still think 24v/increasing power draw is gnarly though).

Looks very impressive-- amazing dynamic range, 120fps in 4k, and 4.6k is a good resolution for my purposes. And I personally like s35, since I like vintage lenses. But "full frame" carries a big premium for lots of filmmakers right now.

Given similar pricing (for rental/for purchase), would you choose this over the Mini LF?

I think maybe one of the reasons for the display on the Operator's side of the camera was to have a way to see and select what ND filter setting you wanted. Will this ND system allow for only full stops or will it also allow finer increments of change between stops. Are the NDs just different strength glass filters or will it be some type of E-ND system.

It’s an Arri. There’s a reason why the company been around for over 100 years.
Still look forward to V-Raptor XL as a high res, relatively high frame rate, multi format camera.

if anything, Arri’s approach with the larger photo site sensor is another vote for a DSMC 3 version of Gemini.

Matt,

If I'm being honest, I still think that the S-35/+ frame size is still the sweet spot for an " In focus- Out of focus" shallow depth of field image.

4.6k... arri you can't do a real 4k with it...! Does Netfilx apoorve this BTW?
Well Deakins was happy with 3.2k for an Imax output :chuncky:
Give me an LF version please.

And the body is too big IMHO.

"The ALEXA-35 makes the original look like an enormous dinosaur. It’s efinitely the right move to use a similar form factor to RED."

It's still a huge dinausor if you ask me.
And not so good in lowlight... (160-6400 iso)

But it's going to sell like litle kakes anyway...

I think the size was necessary due to maybe the size and or heat dissipation of new components that are responsible for all these great new image capabilities. If you look at the left and right sides of the Alexa35 in Dan's #2 post, where are the fans? The B24 battery will be in the back so that leaves the top and or the bottom. Maybe they have come up with some new or better optimized way of cooling the camera with a much lower fan noise?

The body is mainly a heat sink. A big hole.

Apparently there are 1.5 additional stops of dynamic range in the shadows. At base ISO (800 ISO) Arri used to quote 7.4 over and 6.6 under (14 stops), but I think that's been expanded to about 7.8 over and 6.7 under maybe with recent software updates? As they now rate the camera closer to 14.5 stops of dynamic range ("14+" stops).

Anyway, this implies something like 8.8 over and 8.2 under for the Alexa35 or let's just say 8.5/8.5 maybe? The Alexa is interesting because in my experience it's much noisier than Red or even Venice but holds onto color better than most competitors despite the noise. Also interesting because how did they achieve this? Full well capacity should dictate highlight dynamic range and with smaller pixels there should be about a stop LESS highlight dynamic range at a given ISO, not more.

I wonder if Log C will be the default recording format and if that will preserve all the added dynamic range. So many workflows use is it as a standard but where is there room for the extra dynamic range? Canon Log 2 is starting to get "too flat" for me so I wonder what Alexa35 log footage will look like.

I bet skew will be about the same. Really intrigued by the 2K S16 mode too.

Alexa35 looks like a winner all the way, but Arri mentions but the new camera intercuts perfectly with previous models, so I don't expect any major changes. Just upgrades, like the extended latitude, better low-light performance (when I was still amazed at how well the current models work in that regard...) and the Codex system from the Mini LF. The sensor size is the same, so it will allow to use all these amazing legacy lenses that have been abandoned in favor of FF glass.

Anyway, I could have been shooting with the Alexa Mini or the Mini LF for another 10 years.

Let's see that dynamic range in action! BTW, It looks like an old TV studio camera...

Something about it reminds me of the Fisher-Price Pxl 2000 Pixelvision camera:

1.5 stops more in the highlights puts the camera around +9/-8 instead. That is insane. No idea how that is possible with smaller photo sites.
