  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Appreciation...

Thank you RED

Thank you RED

It is not my attitude that I go crazy about a brand or a known person (moviestar, singer whatever). But with RED and Jim it was the first time in my life I became a fanboy and messias in the name of RED (which never asked me to do that of course not). When I discovered the very first web message of RED in 2005 I guess, I felt immediately and very strong: RED describes exactly, what I was waiting for since a long time and what was in my eyes a very logic next step in technical development: a CMOS digital still camera with at least 25 pictures per second=a digital cinema camera. I always wondered why nowbody from the "classic" film industry (Kodak?) wanted to jump on this train? SONY? Great manufacturer of broadcast stuff but I never liked the plastic look of this HD hype video and never understood why the industry praised this wrong approach as the "future of cinema".*In my opinion it had to be somebody with the right feeling and love for this magic look of negativ film and was willing to bring this magic over to the digital world. When I heard that Jim was behind this "scam" I first started to google to find out, which crazy guy would built a cinema camera for 17'500 Dollar? When I found out that this was Oakley Jim I knew: this is the right man. I always loved Oakley because this was not only an evolution but a revolution in eyewear. And I knew, that Jannard was a big collector of cameras, still and film. So this was the right man with a view from outside and enough cojones and crazyness to build this camera.

*So, in 2005 I visited the RED page very often for to know: WHEN will "they" fullfill there promise. Then, day zero, NAB, Vegas 2006, the very long expected day arrived and to bad, I couldn't be there because of a private story. So I tried to call the RED booth several time. Please, pick up the phone! Hi Daniel, you'd like to place a deposit? Could you please call later? We are not ready yet. Long story short end: I got Nr. 222. And since then, my professional life has changed. It was EXACTLY On my 50th birthday on January 12/2008 when RED delivered me my dream camera. Since then this camera works without ANY problem, so does it Nr.2222. And I can't wait to have my EPIC here, it will be hopefully also the first in Switzerland as this was RED 222.

Thats my RED story and I hope it goes on. Thanks to Jim and all the incredible people behind.

To Jim and the Red team:

On my birthday last year, I received an e-mail from the red team wishing me a happy birthday. I thought that was very thoughtful, so I responded with a thank you. Being that I thought that it was auto-generated, I did not think I'd get a response. Boy, was I wrong. Jarred wrote a reply to me saying "you're welcome, now go get drunk." I was floored by this. For him to take time out of his busy schedule to respond personally to my e-mail (and with sincerity) says volumes about this Red machine.

Heh heh heh... Never too busy to raise a drink to one of our family on his birthday.. be it Peter Jackson or the Great Robert Browning.

Thanks for the kind words... I don't think you can understand just how motivating they are to our team.

Jim,

I owe you and RED the deepest appreciation I can possibly imagine.

3 years ago, I was an action sports videographer who wanted to break into features.

3 shorts years after acquiring serial number 137, I completed principle photography on my first full-blown feature as a DP.

It's called Killer Holiday, and I hope you have time to watch the teaser here...

Without Red, I'd still be dreaming instead of doing. You literally made my dreams come true.

Jarred,

Thanks to you as well. I remember your words of encouragement at that first Sundance party. Wow, it's been a ride.

Thank you.

It's no uncommon for us to be filming a celebrity and have some stranger walk up and say, "Wow is that a Red Camera?".
The Red camera is often more famous than the people we film. It the first piece of equipment that has directly effected our profits for the better. Every time I shoot with it I'm glad I bought it.
Jim, you make us feel like part of the company, not simply consumers of your product. I'm glad to be part of it all.

And Ted,

The director and producer of Killer Holiday said they bumped into you at this year's Sundance, and that you invited them to screen Killer Holiday at Red studios.

Hope to see you there in a few months. : )

I love it that I, a complete stranger to him, emailed Jarred to ask for permission to create a RED Trivia game for the iPhone, and he was wonderfully encouraging. Made me really feel like part of the RED family, even though I can't afford a RED camera, at least until Scarlet Fixed comes out :).

Unfortunately I ran into a tough bug and had to work on some other projects, but RED Trivia should be ready on the App store in a month or so. I created it with great affection for the RED company and team, and think it will be a real blast :).

So thanks to Jarred for his encouragement and for Jim for inspiring all of us who have business dreams!

I've followed RED for a few years and have loved every moment of the journey. For me life is a journey, while I'm constantly aiming somewhere, wanting to achieve something, it's the road to get there that has always captured my heart. That's what I find so addictive about RED and the passion in this community. I feel like I'm on a journey with a huge group of people like me. Some shine like stars and some of us blend more into the background but it's common ideals spawned from people of difference that makes a community and I'm so so grateful to the whole RED team for letting me come along on this one.
Jim, you said that there's a long road ahead; I hope you don't find that too daunting. I suspect many find it frustrating but I find it hugely exciting.
Thank you

I've made my living as a filmmaker in a small market for about 30 years. In that time, I've pushed for better images and better tools wherever I've been. It's not easy, and for most of that time, it has felt like the big things happening in production were very far away. Red has changed that.
There have been three times in my career when I sensed that something was so important that it was going to change the world. And each skeptics felt surrounded by skeptics and naysayers.
The first was time code. It seems silly now, but nobody at the TV station where I worked could understand my excitement. "Why do you need to know the exact frame?" they asked.
The second was Avid (in 1989, I think). I saw an early demo, and it was immediately clear to me what a good idea editing on a computer was. Nobody I was with thought it would go anywhere. (A couple of years later, when I owned a production company, it was my first purchase.)
The third is Red. I've been astonished at the FUD lobbed at Red, and the range of sources it has come from. But the pictures speak persuasively for themselves.
But there is something more at Red. There's passion. And Jim's passion has attracted a group of people who support each other, and who support Red the company. The vision I see at Red is about more than a great camera, it's about breaking down barriers -- barriers to gear, sure, but more importantly, barriers to knowledge. David Mullins and Steve Gibby, Graeme Nattress and others will answer questions from anyone - kids just starting out, or old hands like me. Jim and Jarred and the other folks at Red have created a community in which that is able to happen. What an astonishing thing that is! It makes this a noisy place. It drives some of the guys over at CML crazy. But it's changing the world. When a guy like me in a very small city well away from LA can be looking forward to owning the very same camera that the latest Hollywood blockbusters are shooting, that's a paradigm shift. But when I can share ideas with the people who are working on those films, that's a revolution.
Thank you for working to change this world we work in.

BTW... this moment in time is the single best of my business life. I have had the luxury of being associated with a bunch of really great people and really cool stuff ... more than anyone deserves. But the release of EPIC takes the cake. Times a million.

Jim

I said it at the studio, and I'll say it again: Thanks for nothing less than enabling our careers. And I can't wait for my piece of that cake. *grin* See y'all at NAB.

Although you might feel that you Jim are the one that has to show appreciation towards us loyal red Community! in reality we are the ones that have to say Thank you Jim Jannard for providing us with the tools to make our dreams more reachable! i for one can see my ambitions being alot closer than before red came to be. im a strong believer of saying that where there is a will there is a way, and you Jim are a true testament of that. before red i had no idea on how to go about making it in the film industry, then a good friend of mine told me about this revolutionary camera that is changing the world, and more importantly that it was a the reach of with not alot of money, unlike other professional equipment. so i set out to educate my self out the art of film making, went to school NYFA in new york city, did a 1 year film directing course, and was even fortunate to work with the beloved Red One on my last project, and all of that i was able to do it in a 2 year period. You might have set out with an idea of making your dream camera, and ended up making a tool that has touched not only the Multi million dollar budget films with the deep pockets but also most important individuals with just a dream in their hands like my self and many others in between, im pretty sure of that!. So on behave of my self and the ones that are one step closer to achieving their dreams as a result of your pioneering motivation we say Thank you Red and everybody has worked very hard for vision, and to the one responsable for all of this Jim Jannard!

Truely !!!!

This was my exchange with Jarred when I got my happy birthday email...

To Jim and the Red team:

I've been a member on this forum for almost two years, and I've never written a single post. I did not feel the need to. Anything that I needed to express has been done so time and time again (and quite eloquently) by the many loyal members of this forum. I've been fortunate enough to just sit back and absorb the wealth of knowledge that this forum has to offer.

I also don't need to reiterate the magnitude of the technical feat that you and your team have accomplished. Anyone who is a member of this forum is quite aware of that (and once again, have put in words far better than I could.) We are all so appreciative of that. But what I want to express my appreciation for is another aspect I feel is deeply embedded within in your vision.

...

I will be at NAB this year. It will be my first experience. And I too hope to shake your hand and give you my personal gratitude and say. "I'm honored to be able to shake the hand of a visionary. A visionary that gives the grandest of voices to the smallest of people."

+1

I've been quietly following RED's progress ever since the first teaser website in 2005. I was a broke, and broken-hearted, college student when reservations opened but I resolved to buy a RED as soon as I had the means. Fast forward to today and I'm finally ready to invest in the camera of my dreams and the camera that will launch my career. I couldn't be more excited.

Thank you, RED team, for your vision and your creations. I'm truly grateful.

See you at NAB!

84, 85

I still remember the first day of NAB 2006 when we signed up for our first two cameras. We used Amex and were a bit late, so we ended up with serials 84 and 85. Still not bad! At this point there was nothing firm, just rumors and aluminium mockups and the promise of a Big Change for the entire industry. I saw it clearly already then.

I remember shaking Jim's hand and being told very firmly how we would get a full refund at any time. I told him no way, "In Red we trust!" We got our two Rs, asked for them to be signed, and also got that insane business card "If you ever doubt this project, call me, please." We never doubted.

I couldn't personally go to Red Day to pick up the cameras, but Monica and Noah went. We got our Pelican cases branded (what a great idea!) and the pictures from the event are wonderful.

And so we lived through those first days and weeks and months: bad blue channel, constant overheating, poorly finished accessories and being in a constant beta state. Nobody else around us believed in Red, the big camera makers all mocked us. And boy was it FUN! Probably the most exciting moment I've lived technologically.

Since then our two babies have been everywhere, they've shot movies, big TV-series, music videos, we've lent them out to personal and student projects. They've been employed as props. They've been banged up, they've fallen down, hard... And they've never been more busy than right now, as Red seems to have taken on a mind of its own.

Whenever we've needed help, the Red Team has always been there. I'm not a big fan of the phone, but that's never been a problem with Red since e-mail responses seem to be completely instant, 24/7. You guys have never left us hanging with a tech question, and I truly appreciate that! Thank you Deanan, thank you Graeme, thank you Ted, thank you Jared, thank you Kelly! Thank you to the entire Bomb Squad!

Thank you all so very much.

Now hurry up and ship our Epics!!!

Jim, here I was one of the first to believe in RED. I saw your first posts on DVinfo, and even as a 17-year old student who had no means to buy a RED, I was in love with the concept and the promise (even before pricing was announced).

I went to IBC that year just to see RED (2005 I guess?) to see the first images of the Frankie-sensor.

No, I couldn't afford a RED One, and still don't. But I kept believing in it, talking to people about it - still do, btw. I also was very taken by the fact that me and my friend could just talk to you on IBC, and even though we weren't a big customer then, just 2 students being interested, you gracely took the time to talk to us.

I spent 5 months in film academy before leaving. I kept talking about this RED camera, and everyone there laughed at me and called it a scam. Fast forward to 3 years later, all their end projects are being shot on RED.

Now I'm maybe in the running to buy a Scarlet, but it will depend on budget, the final script of my short, etc. Anyhow, if I make a movie, it will be on RED.

Thank you.

Best regards,
