  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Appreciation...

Heh heh heh... Never too busy to raise a drink to one of our family on his birthday.. be it Peter Jackson or the Great Robert Browning.

Thanks for the kind words... I don't think you can understand just how motivating they are to our team.

You are too kind, sir. You guys motivate us, and conversely, we can motivate you. That is a very exciting circle to be in. It's nice to be a part of this revolution in resolution.

Congrats to Kelly and Brent!

And thanks to the RED team for dragging the acquisition side of cinema kicking and screaming at times into the modern age. Even if RED had been a one shot wonder and disappeared into the fog of history that contribution alone would live on. All the better that the One was such a success and you can continue pushing the limits for years to come.

Now on to Monstro! I've still never bought a digital camera. A nice FF35 6k DSMC with 14+ stops of dynamic range sounds like just the ticket to break my fast.

As a rule I make it so that I never have to regret my actions but there is one thing I look back to and regret... not looking in the right place to find out about RED early enough.
Granted, I got in on the "last chance" that was given on January 2007 but I could've been there earlier... Not for the titanium R or anything else but because I wanted to believe in RED from the very beginning.
But at least I get to enjoy my baby every day! Since the day I got my One (I called my mother right after my #1333 cleared customs and told her she was now a grandmother and that gave her a mini heart attack, I'm sure) I've helped out so many friends who wanted to tell their own stories because that's the feeling I got from RED and all I ask is to be on the set so we can all play with my camera (and because I am really bad with money)
And it is all thanks to you, Jim, Jarred, Brent, Kelly and every other hero-member of this extended family of RED for giving us a voice and the power to say millions of words with beautiful pictures!
Thank you!!!

EDIT: Kelly and Brent; so is it an Epic or a Scarlet or an actual human baby? And since I am pretty sure we are talking about an actual baby with 10 fingers and 10 toes then congratulations!!!

Congratulations Jim! Epic changes everything.

BTW, ...when I tell people I was the guy who made that first presentation at NAB, they usually look at me with serious doubting eyes.

Your success is due to many many factors, but I think your honesty and generosity with everyone around you is legendary and inspiring.

Enjoy every moment of NAB!

Your friend,

F

You know, it's really amazing how this community has sprung up and gelled into something so tangible around something that's - let's face it - quite obscure to most people. It shows passion from every side, and I love it, because there are so few places in life to find that. I'm a passionate person, especially when it comes to creating, yet I too often am surrounded by apathy, and it feels lonely sometimes.

I don't make my living with film - yet. I decided a few years back (right around when Red was getting moving, actually...) that I wanted to switch career paths and move into film, and I'm well on my way. This is hard as hell to do mid-life, but the passions that fly about on this forum and among those few I know who work with Red cameras, they keep me motivated like you wouldn't believe. The value in Red is so far beyond the products, it's in the people, all of us together chasing this dream in our own ways.

You're the family that I can't easily explain to my friends ;) and there's no better group that I'd rather march into the future with. So, a sincere thanks for the tools, the teachings, and most of all, the inspiration.

Time for personal thanks... to all those helping in this forum generously for more than 4 years.

In my case ( to mention a few...):

Gunlik Gruven
Luca Imensi
Kaku Ito
David Mullen
Michael P
M Most
Hans-Georg Daun
Ian Bloom

And many others Thank you for your generosity.

And thanks to all RED team for their incredible help and support.

The same goes to you though. Than YOU for sharing your thoughts and findings.

I want to thank Frederic to get me in ;).

You are one of those guys that stand out as well Joseph... the amount of help you have given to people around here is incredible... almost 2500 posts worth.. day and night. The big dogs need to look over their shoulder for the guys like you.

Was great to see you the other day, glad you finally made it to the studio :)
Glad to see Joseph's name enrolled on it, cheers to both of you :)

Shawn... you are one of the ones that was there at NAB for the 1st presentation made by Frederic at 9am on the 1st day of NAB 2006? (...)
Frédéric, another one... ;-)

Way back when there was the chance of making the $1000 deposit I just did not have cash, I did not even have the $1000 for the deposit, but I never lost hope. I worked, and worked, and saved up, until I had the cash to buy my RED, that took time, so much time that I ended up with RED #6340, it took 6339 RED's to be sold for me to have the cash to buy mine...and when I did, I had no cash left, but, this camera has generated so much work, that I have been able to start shooting with my old Nikon lenses, and from that I have now the full range of RED lenses, all primes and 2 Zooms. Now comes EPIC. I debated, should I go stage 3 and loose my RED or go stage 2 and keep it, and have the possibility of shooting with 2 cameras. Stage 2 won out. Soon lots of us will have 2, some more than 2 RED made cameras, yet, such a short time ago, many like me, could not even afford 1.
All this living in a country, Mozambique, which is one of the poorest in the word, and where the import tax I have to pay on all equipment is 42%...imagine, and the cost of shipping to Mozambique is so high....my RED equipment ends up costing about 50% more than what it costs in the USA...
De facto, António, quase um milagre / indeed, almost a miracle :-D

This post is solely to remind everyone how much we appreciate the support.

We are fully RED because of the suggestions, comments and patience of our customers and posters here. The interaction with everyone has made RED a better company.

I'd start with people like David Mullen, who has donated his time to the cause of helping young and interested enthusiasts understand just about anything they can think of. Imagine having a trained professional that will answer each of your questions... wow. Only here. I can't thank David enough...

The shape of our program has changed because of you. The time you have spent here has made a huge difference in what we are doing. I hope it is apparent that we are here and listening, sometimes to 4am. We are aware that this interaction is not normal in any industry... and we like it.

We are always late, but worth the wait. Only a dedicated group of friends would put up with this. We count you as just that.

I hope many of you can make NAB... for selfish reasons. I'd just like to meet you and shake your hand. You have helped shape what RED is...

Thanks again... it is a long road ahead.

Jim

Well, I can't afford to Jim, to see the birth of my longterm dream, but I fully appreciate what you have done and the effort you have put it. I think we all do.

16 pages on this thread...and I just discovered it. I must have been asleep at the wheel :)

Bear with me as we rewind back to mid-2005:

I leaped onto a yet-to-be-created Red train way back in mid-2005, when Jim shared with me his dream for a new camera system. At that time I believe just Ted, me, and possibly a very few others knew the details of Jim's dream for what eventually became Red. I had already known Jim since 1985 from my sports TV work, and Oakley's involvement with the sports industry. That day in mid-2005 was a deep catharsis and turning point for me. What I heard from Jim that day radically changed the entire direction of my career, and my passion for my work - and I dare say since then Red has deeply enhanced the careers of thousands of others in this industry, including those of you who've posted on this thread.

People do business with other people they like and trust. I liked Jim and trusted him fully - thus the move on my part to support Jim and his new vision was really a no-brainer for me. Somehow I was placed in a position to be one of the earliest supporters of Jim and Red. I fully embraced that - and I believe most of you would have if you'd have been in my shoes way back then. To be clear though - those of us who adopted Red before and shortly after the formation of Red put our careers and reputations right on the line. Risk and return are inseparably connected - we risked a lot, but the returns for that risk have been phenomenal.

I was just really fortunate to be on the invited team of industry people who met at Oakley headquarters on December 14, 2005 to brainstorm ideas for what would become Red one. I was also way fortunate to get the chance to publish the first interview with Jim about Red (Studio Monthly, 4/06), and most of the other early magazine articles about Red.

The uncanny vision, endless tenacity, tireless passion, and remarkable team building skills of Jim laid the cornerstone and foundation for everything which became Red. Many business people have built new successful companies - but very few have combined Jim's rare mix of attributes. Its one thing to have a vision for something - but quite another to bring it to a reality on such a grand scale.

The Red Team that Jim built has great breadth, depth, tenacity, goals, and a never-ending sense of "family". Jim's vision for Red would never have been realized without such a dedicated team being formed, and then their many long years of full commitment since then. I know them all - and they each have my deepest respect.

The other early Red supporters also have my deepest respect. We share the common bond of knowing that we recognized the potential of Jim's dream to the point where we put our time, talents, and money into the effort. Its one thing to "talk the talk", but quite another to "walk the walk".

All you members here on Red User also have my deepest respect. Everyone's contributions are important here. Many of you members have contributed untold hours to moderating, explaining, mentoring, and supporting this community. Without your support there would be no Red company, much less their products. Red is a company built by the people of the world - not just Jim and Red Team.

Thanks for this "Thanks" thread Jim! The cool thing is that I know the deep gratitude you and Red Team have expressed for your supporters, contributors, and customers is absolutely sincere. We feel appreciated and respected...

One last thought. Yes, the seeds of Red were planted back in 2005 (and earlier than that in Jim's dreams), but in a real sense Red is still in an embryonic state. If we think that we as a community have already come a long way, consider for a moment that its really just a drop in the bucket to where all of this is headed. It won't be without some more growing pains along the way - but nothing of any real value is ever achieved easily.

Thanks Jim, thanks Red Team, thanks Red User members, thanks to everyone in the world who shares in the ongoing vision of Red. Thank you for all the insight and kind words. We're all in this together...

I love reading these stories of how RED came into being. It really is an unbelievable story. For a camera company that was only a twinkle in Jim's eye only 6 years ago to now be producing by far the best camera in the world - hands down - is just amazing. Even more so when one considers the experience and resources behind the giant multinational competitors who have been seemingly completely left behind. It is, literally, awe inspiring. I would love to see the RED documentary.

I hope I can make it to NAB to meet all of the amazing people whose posts I've been reading here on Reduser.

Thank YOU, Jim!

Steve, you're one of the folks that I met through RED and have always been very generous with your support and advice to me. I echo many of your comments in that we all want to work with people we know and trust and that is why RED has become the powerhouse it is in such a short period of time. It started with the people behind the product, then came the cameras, but it still remains with the backbone of the company and this community it has created. I think it's because we are all taking ownership in seeing RED succeed. No amount of marketing can gain that kind of trust. Just honest, hard work backed up by a strong ethic and commitment to the customer.

Jim and RED Team,

RED has become my career starting last spring. I graduated from film school in 09. I attended The Art Institute of Portland, and was born to be in this industry. I didn't know where it would take me, but I am extremely grateful that it took me to your product and community in RED. As an AC/Camera Op and an aspiring DP, I hope it can be my career for life.

Unfortunately I wont be making NAB this year. The company I work for has fallen into some hard times, but we are working our way out. I am sure it is going to be an amazing experience. I hope that I can get to REDucation, that is my goal this year, even if I pay my own way. It will be nice to meet the RED team, and to shake your hands. As well as meet some of the RED community. Thanks for creating such a great product. It is, and will be, my future career. I appreciate your sincere words.

Cheers
