Apple's announcement...

I got really excited about that as well, but then i re-read what David Pogue said :

"Many Apple observers also wonder if Apple thinks that desktop computers are dead, since not a word was said about the iMac and Mac Pro. An executive did assure me, however, that new models and new designs are under way, probably for release in 2013"

Dont forget the Imac in that sentence and the topic being desktops which the imac counts as... it could very well just mean that there are new iMacs coming, not necessarily mac pros. And Tim Cook didnt really say anything either in that email.

Boy is it funny how hard we all really try and find some good news between the lines. We are a desperate bunch :)

I have already switch to the dark side.. but i promise, if a tower and proper notebook is released in the near future, I will get back on the apple horse faster than it took me to write this post :)

In fact, when I saw that the new Retina MBP was equipped with an Nvidia graphics card I started to hope like crazy and then... Nothing.....
In a few months I'll be Senior Data Manager (and/or workflow manager, we did'nt decided how to name my job yet lol) on a feature film shot on Red (seems to be Red One MX and Scarlet here) and I have to make the specs list of the machine I need to do the job... I wanted a Mac Pro but why would we pay more for the same machine as in 2010 (it is more or less 200 euros more expansive in France) ? Sure it will get the job done and since I will certainly use a Fibre Channel card I don't need Thunderbolt and USB 3 for the job... But the company buying the computer want's it to really last... Cnsidering too the Dark Side... Fu***ng Darth Sidius !!!

Well, the fact that there is a Nvidia card again in the new MBPs is giving me hope. If this is supported by Premiere Pro any time soon, together with Thunderbolt and USB-3 we'll have great portable solution. I can imagine that Apple is focusing on the upcoming wave of TB peripherals and may give us a small core device of sheer computing power instead of a desktop MacPro.

Think hyper Mac Mini !

I would LOVE the return of a "Cube" Mac (that would be that "hyper mac mini").

Just get a hackintosh, then you get your OSX and thunderbolt and USB3.0 + all the cheapness and speed, AND you get to learn something building your own computer....ikea furniture is harder.

My 1st computer was a Mac in 1984. I have never owned anything but a Mac. I am an Apple collector. I knew Steve. And I am a huge Sir Jony Ive fan. Huge...

Today's announcement was certainly a setback. No question about it. The appearance is that Apple is abandoning the professional. No 17" Mac Book Pro and no real new Mac Pro are signals that will shake the core of the Apple professional.

But I don't believe this is the end. My bet is that Apple is just taking a bit more time to get it right. I spent several years in Apple purgatory when Steve was gone and Sculley (and others) completely screwed up Apple. I expect this moment in time to be just another brief moment in Apple purgatory.

There are lots of smart guys at Apple. Too smart to give up the professional. Professionals are the front row. They influence the "rest". Apple gets this.

My bet (and I have no inside knowledge whatsoever) is that Apple is feverishly working on a Mac Pro with full 4K graphics support, USB3 and Thunderbolt, along with a new 17" (or greater) Mac Book Pro.

If I am wrong, Apple clearly knows the consequences. I just don't think that Apple is ready to give up what they have worked so hard to achieve... the loyal support of the professional.

Jim

My first computer was a Commodore 64 in 1989... things have changed significantly since then.... now my cell phone has 8gb mini sd card...and yes apple has done a lot of great things but I think they are over rated... thunderbolt technology is still ahead of the game but people are still using usb instead of thunderbolt...iphone has a billion applications and at least half of them are useless but we will all miss Steve jobs as an inspirational leader and an inventor...

I‘m a Mac fan since 1987. Let‘s get realistic, Apple will go Retina on all devices but today 4K Displays/iMacs/MacPros are simply not ready or could not be priced under $4K. Apple don‘t want to cover a 5% niche market with super high priced products.
And it‘s not only about 4K it‘s about convenience and portability. I think many if not most of us can live with the new Retina MacBook Pro combined with a 27“ Display. All others have to wait at least until 2013...

heh heh love you Shawn... now you know just how much you putting that sticker there means to us.

Remember.. true story... Jim and I used to hand make every sticker we sold on RED.com while we were waiting for the Red One to show up.

Seriously.

He would line the big roll of 3m paper on the plotter and print each one out and then cut each one and i would laminate them, we would do that in the middle of the night, each and every week as we waited for some code to cook or some hardware to come out of the oven. Pretty Crazy.

So all of you that have those old stickers, there was ALOT of love put into each and every one of them.

We need updated stickers and Buzzsaws, Jarred! I need one to put on the car I bought a year ago for less than I've put into my Scarlet :p

You make a good point about Retina.. It is nice to know that Apple understands the advantages of resolution, and knows very well that 1080p was a stop gap as well. Funny to think that if you shoot 1080p , you cant even go full screen on a 15" notebook anymore. Heck, you cant even go fullscreen on an Ipad. :)

Something to chew on for those of us sitting back and enjoying Timescapes in 2560x1440 on our iMac, cinema/thunderbolt display, or now our retina MBPs...
1080p is okay. But 4x the resolution never hurt anybody.

I'm still a bit curious to see how well the graphics chip in this new Retina MBP will hold up displaying all those pixels + doing all the computing stuff.

I remember when "HD" came out, it was the badass new thing that everyone wanted to get to show off to their friends. Now, even broke ass college kids have HDTV's. Reminds me a lot of how people acted when iPod's became popular.

If 4k becomes the new "it" thing (which, I think, all of us that have invested in Epic's and seen 4k firsthand believe is an eventuality) then Apple would seem a likely company to invest early and substantially in it's rise. After all, the rumors of the Apple TV are still floating around out there... do you think they would launch with just a 1080p model? Doesn't seem very 'Apple'. Their perseverant marketing of the 'retina display' shows there is already a significant consumer awareness of the advantages of resolution. It makes me think they would probably launch with models that at the very least support 2K or quad HD. I'm sure it could convince me to abandon my new 3DTV.

Plus, with the inevitable transition from hard copy's of movies (DVD/Bluray) to the streaming/download/cloud storage of movies, I would imagine Apple would invest in the support of whatever format makes them the most money. Because as much as they focus on the development of iPod's, iTunes is just as important to them. And if 4k becomes the new "it" thing (which IT WILL!!!!), then they stand to make vast amounts of money by investing in machines that can support 4K playback. If they make Mac's that can support 4K downloads, then they can charge a premium for them (just as theaters do with 3D.. anyone think we'll see 3D support in mac's soon? honestly I was shocked it wasn't in the latest generation. Think of the iTunes revenue!!!!) on iTunes. This is why professional support is so important. Our lofty expectations set consumer standards. And as we've seen with the digital cinema market, if you aren't cutting edge (RED :D ), then you will play catch up for years, and your business will suffer for it. Right now, iTunes movies read like this: 'Rent Movie:$3.99. Rent HD Movie:$4.99.' Why would they not invest in ' Rent 4K Movie:$6.99 Rent 4K3D Movie:$9.99'? It's only a matter of time before we see it.

However... Macbook Pro w/ USB 3.0 + Maxx Digital Mobile Rocket (whatever newest iteration they come up with) + Red Rocket Breakout Box + Red Projector = on set :)

I like Apple, I like their laptop and mobile solutions. But I really don't know what I need a Mac tower for. I have a PC workstation, built with the components I choose to fit what I do best. It's made for me, it's designed by me to fit my needs. I tweaked the system to make it fit my needs and at a fraction of the price of a Mac Pro of the same caliber, I edit Epic HDRx 5K footage, grade in Resolve, make VFX:s in AE and for other stuff edit in Avid. The only thing I miss is thunderbolt, but it's coming out now for PC.

So, I would never have a PC laptop, but I could never see why a Mac Pro is needed in my line of work.
I would have wanted a 17'' Macbook Pro, but the new Macbook is great for difficult on set work with little work space. Thunderbolt, USB3.0 and HDMI: I have waited for those connectors on a slimmed Macbook Pro with Nvidia graphics for a long time and I think it comes together nicely in the new macbook pro.
If I need a bigger screen on location, then I would not want a glossy 17'' screen with the program interface, I want a 21'' 10-bit monitor instead. Being on location it's the throughput bandwidth to disk drives that is the main issue for me working with footage.

I am more happy with this update then I've been with the last two Apple updates. But will I ever buy a Mac Pro tower? I rather put my money on a Red projector and a great RAID solution.
I'm editing on the current Mac Pro right now and it's a pain in the ass compared to my system at home.

IMO

As an outsider (not a mac user) I wonder if the fact that Windows has become more stable hasn't affected the thinking at Apple. A few versions of Windows ago, the Internet was peppered with Windows complaints. Not so much anymore. So I'm wondering if Apple isn't losing market share to the less expensive Windows machines? Being a stockholder company, things like market share do matter. And if you are not an Apple loyalist, you can easily get the job done with a Windows machine. Again, as someone who has never even started up an Apple computer, I wonder if the loyalty issue isn't heavily tilted to long-time Apple computer customers while Apple loyalty has shifted to new Apple hand-held device customers.

My first computer was an Apple portable in 1992, so I have been an apple customer for 20 years.

I am sure they will not give up the professional market, what they are doing is building the best 17 inch and Mac pro they can and will release when they are ready. They are not going to rush it.
Thr 17 inch MacBook pro I have now, is still a great computer and I can wait for the next generation 17 inch, because I know it will be a great computer when they are ready developing. Same thing goes for my MacPro, it still does the job, and with the rocket inside it is great for all RED footage.

If everybody want to belive that something will change, then you are probably very near of losing your hope :)

I feel bad for those who trusted apple. The apple you all remember died with Steve jobs. His sense of design and the importance he placed on design were traits passed to him by his father. Tim Cook is an efficiency expert. Not art, not passion, but numbers.

it is time to let go and move on. the apple we grew up with died of cancer.

Very sad.

4K will become the new "it" thing, just a matter of when. Taking a guess, probably around 2018 before the first broadcasters start broadcasting in 4K and consumer 4K TV's start to make an prominent appearance. They still want to milk HD for a bit longer (would have been a lot longer if it wer'nt for Red).
