  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple tablet: Thoughts?

Honestly, when I heard the name iPad I thought it was an Onion article joke or something. Apple can't be serious with a name like iPad..

Talking of the Onion and their fantastic fake products, I can't wait to see somekind of iPad accessory like this (for all the people out there wondering how they're going to hold this device ) [N.B. this is actually a REAL product!]:

It needed to have full on laptop functionality to be viable. I think our smartphones or tablet type devices will be the laptops of the future, but this thing needed to be that the day it was released, not just a big ipod touch.

Actually I do see some uses for it:

1. I can sell films to people who own it. If they have the money to blow on this, chances are they have some left over to buy movies.

2. Should make a great multi-touch controller for color grading and music (mixing, virtual instrument control) etc. EG a secondary controller / screen for your existing laptop or desktop. Of course that's assuming that most laptops don't get multitouch screens... nice for storyboarding too. EG fun toy for rich folks like filmmakers. A super-cheap Jazzmutant Lemur.

For the general public though, it'd be kinda difficult picking the much slower, much smaller-screened, more expensive, webcam-less, keyboard-less iPad over a nice lightweight laptop - $500 buys you a lot nowadays.

Oohhh, cause it looks like an oversized iphone. The only interesting thing I could see with this is if someone developed a way to control epic and monitor stats with it.

Well, the iPad does have Wi-Fi built in. There could be "an app for that".

Argh! Why no multiple USB ports on the thing....

I think people here are being way too hard on the iPad and are not seeing it for what it can be and eventually will be. So much potential here.

FWIW, I've known about it for some time, beyond the speculation and info leaks posted online. Haven't personally seen one yet, but I have a client that's already developing for it and I've been doing some of the graphics work for that project. It's going to be HUGE. I'm looking through the 3.2beta SDK notes right now.

For me personally, I think the two big features that Apple missed on this are:

* Multi-user support with shared resources for database, iPod library, calendar, photos, etc..

* The option to add a pressure-sensitive stylus. If it could have the same functionality as a Wacom combined with multi-touch. OMFG, the tablet PC as we know it would be doomed.

Oh, yeah, a dedicated USB 2.0 port would've been nice so I don't have to buy a 30-pin to USB adapter.

And WTF is up with Adobe and Flash??? This thing better have Flash player support by the time it ships. Otherwise that is going to kill this "ultimate web experience". No Flash is a huge killer as it is on the iPhone.

I actually think the 4:3 aspect was a good choice. Because it's trying to be more than just a media player.

THANK YOU, Apple! For not building in a camera and a phone!

Yes, but in the Apple iPad specs:

... H.264 video up to 720p ...

and that is 1280x720

Actually as the ATSC defines "720p", it is only 720 progressive lines and it can very well have variable horizontal resolution, up to a full 1280x720 raster. Just as many video codecs opt for non-square pixels, such as DVCPROHD having 960x720 for 720p. or How various cable and satellite providers also broadcast 960x720 or 1280x1080 resolutions.

That aside, what they are saying is the onboard software will play back H.264 video encoded in resolutions up to 720p Or 1280x720. In the same vein that the AppleTV will.

The device has a 1024x768 screen, which is incidental and does not really matter, as video content will be scaled to fit accordingly.

I remember when the iPod first came out, people dissed it for being nothing more than a portable harddisk. Boy, were they wrong. The iPhone was said to be just another phone. So in that respect, I'll give Apple my benefit of doubt.

If this thing would have an easy way to pull documents off from the Mac/PC at work, it might be perfect for casual work.

I can also imagine that it might become a new tool in sales - and in that extend will create a new need for high quality imagery, i.e. everyone that uses a RED.

(Now, if our next editing machine will be Mac based is a totally different story.)

iPad is a kind of "computer appliance, a computing device with a specific function and limited configuration ability".

It's a device that is between your mobile phone/iPhone and laptop/MacBook/MacBook Pro.

It's an ideal device to hang on forum like this 24hours/7days. :hurray::emote_happyhappy:

It's funny. Every time something new comes out, there will be people bitching.
Basically, if it isn't 100% what they wished for, they'll moan that it sucks.

This looks like a perfect implementation of what they set out to do: a device in between an iPhone and a MacBook. It does more than an iPhone and less than a MacBook. Isn't that in between?

There's a ton of possibilities here. A lot of potential for things we haven't even thought of yet - just like when the iPhone was announced.

The screen resolution is a bit lower than I'd hoped, although at 133ppi it should look gorgeous at that size.
Amazon better drop their Kindle price by 50% if they want it to survive this.

I think Apple are betting on HTML5 killing Flash.

I've been using the H.264 version for a while now and it's so much nicer. Much more stable on SL as well.

More importantly, Apple has set a new bar. How common was touch anything 2 or 3 years ago? Apple has made the technology Bonfire bigger. Conceptually great product, weak here or there, but remarkable by any standard. Will make lots of 'cheddar'.

NO MacOS X
NO multitasking
NO build-in camera
NO SD card slot
NO USB slot
NO HDMI
NO phone
NO anything really NEW

I'm disappointed ! :frown2:
