  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple tablet: Thoughts?

I'm don't think it is good for school work. There was no demonstration of a pen or a similar device to write or paint on it, or to underline something.

It is an iPod touch rolled out thinly. Kids may use it, adults may use it, but not for creative or school work.

It's perfect for school work, lectures, text books, internet, the potential for word processing combing with itunes U and much much more.

you replace a ton of clutter with this thing.

For all the people complaining about lack of camera, USB etc...how do you expect them to sell the second version of the iPad !! Early adopters are usually penalised on price and features...look at the first iPhone - not even 3G, rubbish camera, no video, mingy storage etc!!

iWork apps and a keyboard will go a long way...

My sentiments exactly

Yes, it can replace a ton of clutter. The price for that:

- reduced writing skills
- reduced physical world orientation skills
- creativity dependent on Apple presets
- increased dependency on electronic gadgets to be able to function
- even more life spent on looking at a screen instead of everything else around it

I'd choose the best of both worlds, not accept one fully.

With the USB connection you can connect and transfer files from root directories after having root access like on iphones and ipod touch. There are hacker apps from Rock and cydia that create partitions to make USB drives for storage or access them directly.

Not to mention you have your own Pre-N Gigabit router on set with you to connect to the ipad WITH root Access wherever-whenever around the Set reliably through SMB, FTP, SSH, and even HTTP, VNC also works between IPhone and Desktops / Laptops beautifully.

This is a must hack item, without root access I would say its almost useless too. But the things I can do with my iphone on set really make this iPad worthwhile.

I was almost ready to get an EE PC to run OSX on, but this 9.7" LED ips screen is the best bang for the buck on the market right now.

Let me rephrase: A 9.7" LED IPS Display with Wifi, SMB, VNC, Skype, http, SSH, 3G, Bluetooth, USB, and all touchscreen.

I don't even want a camera, even though someone can hook up a USB webcam absolutely no problem, But you must have root access. The possibilities are endless, for most it won't be very useful.

For people who love exploiting electronics this is the next best thing since the original xbox.

If Apple creates an iPad just for us film makers with all the functions we crave for they will go bust... we are insignificant as far as sales go. The iPad was never made for us. It was made for people to email, surf the web, show photos & videos and use cool tools made by developers, some of which will help us in our work. Come to think of it, I am a potential Ipad user. Imagine tomtom software on it.. I will never get lost again :)

TomTom software runs fine on Ipod Touch and Iphone, It will run on Ipad also. There is no limit, and Hackers now have their own app store called 'Rock' where you can purchase 3rd party apps from Hackers/Developers. And it has a great feature when you have to erase the phone and start over it will download/re-install all apps bought from 'Rock' for no charge. I just did it myself and can't notice the difference from the last iphone I had.

Having just written a 70 pages thesis on a 13,3" laptop, I don't think you want to get any smaller than this. It's strenuous for the eyes, especially if you check the layout with a whole page on the screen. Sure, you can use the iPad upright but that is not that big a change.

And if you really want to use it for writing, you'd need the external keyboard in your backpack. That's another bulky device in there.

Then you can already think about a netbook or a cheap laptop which goes all the way towards being a real computer, maybe even with an external monitor at home so that you have a bit more comfort for working.

Also drawing sketches and write handwritten notes are essential because you very often need to arrange your text in a freeer form (like a mindmap).

Don't get me wrong. The iPad is neat and as a mediaplayer its quite handy, but if I wanted to get some work done I would not invest that kind of money as a student into a tool that only gets me half the way.

Just my 2c.

Totally, this is a gadget. It won't replace your iphone or your Laptop. And I wouldn't recommend it to a writing student either. Drawing? Maybe...

Drawing? On a capacitive touch display without a digitizer? No. Finger painting... maybe.

If you want to draw. Buy a real tablet with Wacom support, pressure sensitivity, an active digitizer which can ignore palm pressure etc... They can be had for the same price. And you can run REDCine, nuke, Avid etc.

It has a USB port no? Through the dock connector! Wacom is USB2 right? It will work eventually if Apple doesn't already see some sort of advantage for it here themselves. I can already use a Wiimote (bluetooth) with this thing, play super nintendo games, and control my Workstation from wherever I am over VNC and 3G. A custom USB connector for the sensor bar and you have a fully functional Wiimote.

Anyone know the FSB on the 1ghz CPU? That will tell us how fast it really is.

The iPad is basically an iPod touch with a big screen. This is what seems to have upset lots of people here. But I see many potential uses for this device and its larger screen, so I started up a list of ideas mentioned here and else where of the possible Apps and future potential the iPad can do for us filmmakers.

Viewing/playback
- field monitor (check zeberas, aspect ratios, histograms, etc)
- shooting script, lists, schedules to view/edit/mark up in production
- life sized slate with timecode
- storyboard drawing, setup diagrams
- viewing dailies
- color grading quick preview with Redcine app

Controlling devices
- interface with DSMC camera contorls via bluetooth, wifi
- Controlling pro apps (Editors, Effects, Color, magic bullet, etc)
- Field sound recorder with multi-touch controls via new hardware support

Some of these will require new hardware adapters, such as HDMI. That alone would open up a line of filmmaker Apps and any hardware developer who makes the HDMI adapter would make a killing from it.

I'm a software developer in my full-time job and am considering joining the iPad developer's program to start making some of these filmmaker Apps. Would be great to collaborate with other filmmaker developers here. Jeff I'll PM you.

It's starting... Might have my first iPad app development contract real soon here. Same client I'm already doing graphics for on another iPad project.

The medical sector is going to eat this shit up. ...Just sayin'

Analysts: Apple could ship 4 million iPads in 2010

All I see is 125 million credit card accounts with a big screen and one-click purchasing. For people making content, it should be a no-brainer.

Analysts: Apple could ship 4 million iPads in 2010:

Analysts have already begun adjusting their predictions
and impressions regarding Apple's new iPad tablet,
with the research group IDC anticipating worldwide sales
of four million units this year. The group believes Apple may
sell two million iPads just in the US market this year,
with sales accelerating as the device gains momentum in the near future.

Yeah, funny there are so many critics here... Who are supposedly in the content creation biz.

People laughed at the "iPod" when it was announced too. Yep.
