  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple tablet: Thoughts?

I would really love if somebody would be able to make an adaptor that would allow hdmi input.
Then we could use it as monitor for the Scarlet.
Plus you can use it later on to demo your footage to people.

I think it will be a blast. I still remember when people said: the iPhone sucks, it doesn't have this, this and that. Couple of years later we there have been millions of iPhones sold and the market is flooded with clones.

I'm pretty sure that within the year we'll see clones of the iPad from other manufacturers.

Like someone else said: compare it with the Amazon Kindle and what it does more that the Kindle. For it's price it's a great gadget.

In my eyes it has a great screen and if we could hook up a camera to it then it would be an awesome monitor for focussing.

Too bad I don't know a thing about making hardware or I'd try to make an HDMI input adaptor for it with fitting software.

Couldn't resist to through this link up, please excuse if somebodies
beat me to it. I guess its the future of this technology that excites me

Make Movies With Apple iPad

"Imagine the dude above is looking at a stripped-down version of the Magic Bullet Looks interface on his main display.
The Tool Chain, Preset and Tool Drawers, and touch-friendly Tool Controls appear on his iPad."

Yeah, we're trying to get Stu Maschwitz to do an open protocol for Colorista. So you wouldn't be stuck with an iPad (although it'd be awesome, I agree, and I'll probably get one).

Your options would be, in order of price:

1. Mimo UM-740 - $200 - 7" touchscreen 800x480 USB monitor with webcam (It just appears as another monitor for your PC). No multitouch. Probably very easy to use - you just drag the control window over to it.

2. iPod Touch - 3" multitouch 480x320. No wired capability.

2. Asus EeePC T91M - $450 - Atom computer with multitouch. Plus you have wired connection option.

3. Apple iPad - $500 - slower chip and no WIRED connection (EDIT: thanks Sanjin) but with proven multitouch capability. Very light.

4. HP touchsmart laptop - $900 - full Core2Duo laptop with multitouch

5. Fancy hardware controller - $1500+ (Tangent Wave, MC Control, etc).

It'd be nice if all the developers settled on an open standard. Something like OSC (open protocol for controlling music apps that there are already iPhone apps for).

I see REDMOTE going iPad, a lot of wireless lens control systems will go iPad, more, etc,...

This thing looks pretty awesome, and the price is much better than I expected (especially with an IPS panel!).

But hey, from the comments I'm hearing I guess it will be just like the iPod - a clunky gadget that will never catch on.:tongue_smilie:

It's actually funny how people are already dismissing the iPad, makes me think about how people are dismissing Scarlet.
The real test will be when it will be available on the market.
I think it has potential and it will sell like crazy. If only it would have a HDMI input adaptor I would be sold :-)

I mean no WIRED. Unless Apple opens it up so any app can communicate via USB.

Big problem having an unreliable connection if you're on set or performing on stage.

iPad Camera Connection Kit
The Camera Connector lets you import your photos and videos to iPad using the camera’s USB cable.

So, a sort of USB connection is there!!!???

For me at least. I dont have £400-£800 for an ebook reader/limited web browser with some fun multitouch UI ideas behind it.

Keep in mind that the iPad is not a creation station like a full-fledged Mac or PowerBook. iPad is a media consumption and communications device. Until Apple launched the iPod and iTunes, they made products that helped all of us make products (Graphics, desktop publishing, office and financial management, video & film). iPod and iTunes created a new line of business and made Apple a player in how the masses consume music.

Imagine this shift in strategy as a pyramid building itself down from the top. iPhone became a communications and information tool of stunning proportions, yet it also demonstrated a powerful personal entertainment function. Now with iPad, consumers have a media consumption appliance that manages nearly every entertainment and media need all in one unit. Games, Books, Internet, Email, Movies, TV shows, and a suite of basic productivity tools are all in one place now. You don't buy iPad to make movies, you buy it to watch them. But its so much more than a media player, this product connects you to nearly every current expression of entertainment, its like a venue for how you live your life.

A world filled with iPad-like devices becomes a vast, democratic marketplace for entertainment. This is a huge upside for indy film: everybody is carrying around their own personal cinema. Self publishers can reach millions of readers without printing costs and destroying trees. This is the promise of rapid-reach, global distribution in an instant regardless if you're a filmmaker or an author, or even if you want to launch a magazine. iPad could be huge.

- 133dpi on an IPS screen sounds pretty reasonable.
- What's with the hate for 4:3?
- Seems to be a pretty flexible 30pin one at the base, but yes, you are limited to one port.
- I'll wait on dismissing the typing interface until I have used it.
- I see this as more something to use with a camera rather than have one internally.
- Without a camera, why do you want a flash??

All that aside, it's a rev 1. More stuff will get added once the basics have had time to settle in. Nothing that is missing is critical for its intended use. For extended uses, well that will come in time.

Eren,

You create media. iPad isn't just for you, its for your audience to access the things you create. Every iPad is yours to fill with your content and thanks to Apple; get paid to do it. For your sake I hope it doesn't fail. The things you list that you wanted iPad to have are all tools that help you create. You don't need new tools for that. What's been missing from the equation is a marketplace, a venue, a "place" where people discover and enjoy your content that matches the capabilities of the technology used to create your content. Media is consumed through our TV's, Theatres, Phones, iPods, Game Consoles and Computers... Apple just added a new one to that list: iPad.

Yes there is. However if you look into it you find out that "Apple does not support other USB devices than cameras" with this connection at the moment.

It's purely in Apple's hands. Of course if I were designing it, I'd just put a few USB ports on the damn thing! And an SD card slot!

I guess it comes down to: how much better and more accurate is that multitouch VS the USB monitors and Tablet PCs? And what unique apps are written for it? No reason those apps couldn't work with full Windows or Mac OS X, but sometimes you get nice iPhone stuff that doesn't appear on other platforms.

I don't know - what do you think about USB monitors vs the iPad? Or a full working tablet PC with network, USB connections for the same price?

I wonder if one could create a stylus for this thing would be a great digital sketching device.
I realize there is that one app you use your finger but I guess drawing with my finger seems a little weird to me.

This is exactly what I thought iPad would be, basically a laptop computer with a Cintiq for a screen. But, its so much more than a creativity tool. I'm sure the market will provide this option for guys like me and you, maybe on round two?

It's the new Newton :-)

I can sort of see it as a more versatile answer to the ebook reader, it's a pretty good value when compared to the Kindle. I'll bet Amazon is not at all happy right now.

But I agree with the general consensus, it doesn't do anything so much better than the combination of my MacBook Pro and iPhone that I could justify a purchase.

On the lighter side, what was the marketing team thinking...

iPad. Seriously?

is the 16GB model the "light days" model, and the 64GB model the "Max-iPad"?

I can just here Steve, "Cramping and bloating, we've got an App for that"

-133dpi is reasonable for reading websites not watching video or showcasing work as a portable e-portfolio.

-Aspect ratio...4:3...did we just go back in time? Who makes 4:3 content anymore? If I'm watching/showing videos on a 10" screen I want to use all the real estate I can, you know?

-Yes, just one port with bulging dongles sticking out. What if I want to connect via USB and use sd cards? Or use sd cards and plug it into an hdtv via VGA?

-Let's face it, typing on touch screen tablets isn't easy (i dont kow if you have used any before) and the back of the iPad isn't straight, so there's probably added wobble if you place it on a surface. True, I could buy the $70 keyboard and but that would kind of work against the portability and, well, that's th one port I had available out of the equation.

-No camera, no ichat. This isn't the biggest deal for me but it would be nice to have video chat or some augmented reality apps. You know, stuff the iphone can do.

-I meant Flash as in Adobe Flash. For a device that's being touted as "the best way to view the web" not having the ability to watch streaming video and have giant gaps in media rich pages is a pretty big problem, rigth off the bat.

I'm not raving mad at Apple for not making the device-of-my-dreams (tm). There are just a few factors at play here:

1. I have a laptop, a desktop and a smart phone. What I don't have is $400-$800 to spend on a device that can't do any of the jobs these devices do any better. Yes it looks cool like all Apple products but I refuse to pay a premium for looks alone.

2. Like you said, it's 1st gen. I'm not closed to the idea of buying future generations of the iPad, it's just that this release has some glaring problems with it. There is potential however which brings me to my last point:

3. As I mentioned on one of my first posts: I would love it if someone turned the ipad into a multitouch programmable control surface for both Mac and PC. I'm heartened to see Stu's got good ideas on his blog. If such an app is released that supports Final Cut, Premiere and AE with some dedicated controls for Colorista or other Red Giant plug ins then I'm sold. It'll be much cheaper than buying devices like the Tangent Wave, that'll be money saved.

Until then, I'm just not the targeted consumer.
