  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple tablet: Thoughts?

-I meant Flash as in Adobe Flash. For a device that's being touted as "the best way to view the web" not having the ability to watch streaming video and have giant gaps in media rich pages is a pretty big problem, rigth off the bat.

Flash is one of the last things I would want for this - I mean, whenever I try to watch a flash video on my Macbook, the fans start making one hell of a noise and it really heats up. But the thing has no trouble at all with H.264 video in Quicktime or on an HTML5 page. Since Youtube is included in a pre-installed application on the device, and Vimeo and a few other places let you open the H.264 files directly as well, so it's a complete non-issue for me.

The only other thing that I can think of that Flash is often used for these days is advertising, and since I very much doubt it would be possible to install Adblock on the iPad, I'm glad it's not there.

I don't think it is all bad. It's a mediaplayer (including the internet as a medium and an ebook reader).
Economically it is a way to market the apps store products to a broader audience and give them more space to work with. I'm always amazed how people like to fumble around on that tiny iPhone screen.

What I am missing is a pen. If I could scribble notes and draw little sketches I'd buy it. Now it seems not to be helping any productive/creative processes.

Still, people will buy it a lot. Ebooks are finally happening.

Amazon has sold upwards of $750 million worth of Kindles.

Are you really telling me if you were in the market you wouldn't spend an additional $200 to get an iPad instead? Of course you would, you would be a fool to get a Kindle over this.

This is the start and end of the argument.

Stop talking about cameras, flash, whether it should edit video...

This is for the e-Reader and coffee table market, which is 10,000 times bigger than our "pro" market.

Why doesn't it HDMI in so we can use it as a Scarlet monitor? Because it shouldn't!

Yes there is. However if you look into it you find out that "Apple does not support other USB devices than cameras" with this connection at the moment.

It's purely in Apple's hands. Of course if I were designing it, I'd just put a few USB ports on the damn thing! And an SD card slot!

I guess it comes down to: how much better and more accurate is that multitouch VS the USB monitors and Tablet PCs? And what unique apps are written for it? No reason those apps couldn't work with full Windows or Mac OS X, but sometimes you get nice iPhone stuff that doesn't appear on other platforms.

I don't know - what do you think about USB monitors vs the iPad? Or a full working tablet PC with network, USB connections for the same price?

As I quoted that before:

iPad is a kind of "computer appliance, a computing device with a specific function and limited configuration ability".

It's a device that stays in between your mobile phone/iPhone and laptop/MacBook/MacBook Pro.

So, than Apple will try to make a lot of money on this "sort of the gadget's market hole" opportunity that Amazon's Kindle couldn't make it.

iPad shouldn't be mixed with a mobile phone or a laptop functionality and capability...

To those of you who are basically bitching because it's not a Mac Book Pro minus the keyboard... wake up! In the same breath you are bitching that it's "nothing new" yet satisfied with it if it's your macbook sans keyboard. Laughable. Surely after what you have witnessed in terms of apps and uses for iPhone over the past year that were not obvious at the start, then you could see the potential for this device in terms of industry and education? It's a blank canvas for a plethora of possibilities with a solid interface and system.

Many possibilities, You... CAN'T do !

You can't use it as image/video bank in the field
You can't use it as external monitor
You can't use it to simply read SD card outside
You can't, You can't, You can't...

Where is The Revolution ?!
In NARROWING the possibilities ?!
It's a step backward !

iPad Camera Connection Kit
The Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera. The Camera Connector lets you import your photos and videos to iPad using the camera’s USB cable. Or you can use the SD Card Reader to import photos and videos directly from the camera’s SD card.

Your thoughts are interesting considering your own signature
"Nothing is true.
Everything is possible."

Thank You, Mick ! :)

I missed the iP CCK possibility !
I thought it must be AC connected.

But still... WHY extra Connection Kits ?!
(assuming the device (iPad) is so big)

Any possibility to use it as a external monitor ?

Jail Break iPad, allow for output with HDMI adapter or use as external display for laptop etc.

Jail Break for iPad will be something crazy but it'll be well worth to see what can be opened from both worlds (apples versus jailbreakers).

I think Imran is on to it... people will tap into the power and the possibilities and deliver apps for professional use that we didn't even think of. I don't think of this as an iPod or even a laptop, but a morphing control device among other things. Like as Stu Maschwitz pointed out... a color correction interface... or a timecode slate, or a storyboard app etc etc.

This will be great on the airplane when I want to watch a film and/or read a book.

It'll be great to browse with when I zip my coffee at starbucks and it will work wonders when I have to write a quick note or throw out an email.

That's what it's for and 90% of the population doesn't need more... unfortunately I do, sigh!!! Because I sure as hell would love to have only that in my backpack instead of the 17" I'm lugging around now.

Any possibility to use it as a external monitor ?

No, but I think that's a bit of an unrealistic expectation... What other laptops or tablets let you do this? The only computer I can think of that works like this out of the box is the iMac which has the mini-displayport input on the back.

The lack of a USB port or two is confusing though. I'm fairly sure the iPad can connect to standard Bluetooth keyboards, but I only have USB keyboards. So I'll probably wait a year and see if the second generation has a little more connectivity. Also, it would be nice to be able to copy files to and from USB flash drives, digital cameras, card readers and so on without any adaptors...

Also, some people have been complaining about the lack of a HDMI or high resolution monitor output, but I think this is because the graphics processor just wouldn't be able to handle it. Driving its display as well as a 1080p display takes a bit of grunt, and I wouldn't expect that from a device that costs less than my main computer's graphics card... It'd also use a lot more power when doing this, meaning it would probably get pretty toasty not having any active cooling. At this stage, it's just not practical in that form factor and at that price, but perhaps in a year or two...

Is it anything more than a big iPod Touch?

Graeme
It's an iPod Touch... ...for Kids Who Can't Read Good.

All kidding aside, I think iPad has massive potential!

Limits are the base for creativity.

I think the omission of a camera is... really weird.
This wuld be a lovely skype platform... But I guess that's exactly why.
The USB port is surprising, but very Apple'ish
Multitasking...
Yes, I think I'd like to listen to some music while writing my mail occationally, or webradio or whatever.

So I guess it's not for me.
As the iPhone hasn't been thus far.

But THAT does not mean it doesn't have a market.
I can see millions of kids drooling over this gaming/surfing/homework/youtube/fun-and-leisure platform.
And frankly: It's the most complete school-notebook I've seen to date, with or without an external keyboard. (Low weight, compact design, long battery lifespan, does what you need, simple, beautifull)

So I guess I am not the right user, but my kids definitely are...

Not to hijack this thread, but I've found the iPhone equipped with Compass, iSee4K, Storyboard, Artemis, and Pocket LD to be an incredible tool. That's not to mention the other things, Map & GPS functions.

Who wants to carry around a Director's Finder and Books/Charts when it's all in one compact package?

I can't really see anyone shooting Red in particular who would want to do without it, but I guess that's why they have so many flavors in the ice cream store...

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

I'm don't think it is good for school work. There was no demonstration of a pen or a similar device to write or paint on it, or to underline something.

It is an iPod touch rolled out thinly. Kids may use it, adults may use it, but not for creative or school work.
