  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any news from RED about new stuff for NAB 2014?

They don't give hints - they put items up for sale. That is not hinting. They also erect fake clean rooms to demonstrate a product being prepped for shipping. Again.. not hints... just false and misleading.

I think it's pretty clear you are upset with RED, but for me...RED has always been a comprimise. They are transparent, and treat their customers almost like family. Its both a good and bad thing.

1) The good: you get camera upgrades for $9000. No one else does that. I never forgot that within 6 months of announcing the C300, Canon then realeased the C500. If I had bought the C300 I would have been LIVID. Same for Blackmagic. They announce the Cinema Camera, and before they even ship...boom it's already outdated by the 4K Cinema Camera.

They also listen and participate to the community here on reduser, and incorporate feedback. Again, unique.

2) The Bad: this transparecny gets them in trouble. They announce things or come up with ideas, and solicit feedback, and then are on the hook for these announcements. In truth its not that different than other companies, except its so much more visible because its lives on this board in a massive echo chamber.

To me you can't have one without the other. RED are transparent and engaged. You will know about a lot of their plans in advance. I think the fact they have been so silent this year leading up to NAB suggests they have listened to customers like you however, and are starting to change their tune.

Not upset with RED - It is the apologists I don't understand and respond to.

I hope so.

Of course. Since you say end of story, it must be.

Of course. LOL

You claim to only be upset at apologists - but you are here ranting that RED has done ya wrong with it's terrible track record on dates. Which is it? LOL

I never said I was upset. I said I disagree with RED and I disagree with RED apologists.

Did anyone ever figure out WHO's cameras were getting upgraded at last NAB? Was it totally fake? How many were upgraded? Just curious...

I would assume they were cameras made for dragon testing by RED or people with RED approval and testing any variables of the sensor upgrade program before the actual start of the program.

That would be awesome but I doubt it it will make really upset a lot of Carbon Dragons, maybe next year NAB, But I hope you are right.

I believe we will see a smaller form factor Epic Dragon, ready to ship. I think there have been some pretty strong hints as to that being the next camera. Place your bets.

That could explain where the CF mini SSd's are going, but I doubt it. I do believe the hints about a smaller form factor camera, though.

Thank you very much

My complaint is when you look at products like RedRay and or Red Projector. RedRay was announced in what 2008/9? If a company such as RED want to give us a peek behind the curtain, great. But RedRay for example was in the store and available for delivery in March of last year? Well I guess a few people got them but silence ever since? Elsie, if you want to take the blame for this personally then I'll be happy to bitch at you personally but you didn't put the item in the store, then completely remove it and act like it doesn't exist. RED did that, along with a rediculous clean room at NAB and other announced items that were given specific shipping dates and years later, no product.
All said, I like RED, so much so I bought one of thier RED Ones and helped push their workflow very early on. I just don't want to see anymore smoke and mirrors. Why does it effect me you may ask? Because clients of mine ask like I'm a freakin representative of the company and when I keep having to push back they just laugh and or get frustrated.

Mike, you make a very good point here. I'll offer no counterpoint.

Its part of the reason so many like Arri and the Alexa because it's a no nonesense camera and company. The products of grandure announcements and delivery dates are annoying and it tarnishes the brand you bought into and or support. So, RED, ship what you got, or leave it and the fancy brochure it rode in on at NAB never to be heard from again back at the office, please.
I don't know... they have people getting into word fights on this forum, clamoring for cameras. I don't think I would change a thing if I were them.

Its strange because I love the rebel attitude of the original company, which was literally all their cards on the table. It was exciting and fresh and nice to see real people attached to a company doing exciting things, and guys that you could relate to that wanted the same thing as you and I ie Jim, Jarred, Ted etc. They woke up an industry and lit a fire under the asses of the competition. RED has created in roads for some who had no other way into the industry. All great things. I feel its only fair to mention the good RED as a company has brought to the industry because its the truth. But, so is missed deadlines, over announced / under delivered products, hype marketing etc. So, I think there's a middle ground now that the company is 8/9 years old and I think they are seeing that. And, damn its nice to remember the good ol' days but, as the saying goes, "adapt or die".

BM announcing their cameras and shipping them a year late got a LOT of s..t for it....but that are different cameras....unheard of at that price point....much, much harder to do....

well I dunno ... I think making the Dragon was about one ZILLION times harder than making the BlackMagic ISO 400 Fixed Pattern Noise Generator device - at any price.

Agreed. If I'm a chef and I figure out that I can cut costs per plate by using Canola and oil instead of real olive oil, can I really claim that I'm moving cuisine forward?

In terms of image quality, BM cameras are a step backward in every way except that they're cheaper. The best BM camera delivers clearly inferior results to an MX Red One from 4 years ago. That's not innovation, it's just price cutting and standards lowering to get to a low price. Chinese knock-off manufacturers have been doing that for years, and no one calls what they do bleeding edge tech.

I fully expect GoPro to bitch slap BM in the 4K camera department this year. And I'm not even joking .... not to mention the GH4.

I think Red is going to Bitch slap BM, GH4 and GoPro in the small 4k camera world with the pocket Dragon.

Consumer electronics is not why a mega-driven billionaire gets into the movie camera business. It will be something huge or move onto another high profile conquest

Though in fairness I think the Pocket Cinema Camera has some amazing merits for what it is, perhaps not in pure image quality but as far as a solidly built super small 16mm sensor with swappable lenses that shoots prores and raw...

I hope GoPro release a 2/3" fixed Scarlet'esque camera...

I'm not talking about consumer electronics, I think a new smaller Epic would be huge, maybe the long ago mentioned Pocket Epic is on it's way. The current Epic form factor is now older then the Red One when it went EOL. It seems Red would like to move away from the $10k Dragon upgrade thing and turn it into some kind of even more expensive trade in deal, which they will not announce until NAB and that really makes me think they have a whole new line of cameras that would entice people to do that. Nothing too drastic just imagine the current Epic with half the length and a little less weight, won't really hurt the existing Epic Dragon market as the specs will be mostly the same. Maybe it will live side by side with it's full size version being used for specialty gigs where size and weight, which are already two of Red strengths, are critical.

Remember electronic things only get smaller, lighter and less expensive. I guess the only question is what will they call it,,, Epic Mini? Epic Mark 2? Epic Terminator?

Well said.
