  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Another update...

It never fails to amaze me to see the founder of one of the most important companies in a major industry...heck TWO companies in TWO major industries, answering his customers questions on a forum at 4 in the morning.

If I ever become successful, I can only hope to have the class and humility that you display, Jim.

The RED ONE - EPIC upgrade program (I'm stage 2) is unique and I guess it will be the only in the camera manufacturers history.

I never thought on buying an EPIC when it was announced (RED ONE is such a great camera I think it won't be obsolet in a lot of years to come 'cause it's resolution and texture), couldn't afford it, but then it came the upgrades news and I just couldn't say no.
 
Jim, Thank you for these recent updates. They really do help with our planning. In this update, you told us that all features will not be available in early Epic-X cameras:

You gave this list of un-enabled features for Epic-M a while back, will the un-enabled features be the same for Epic-X? Or have some of these already been turned on?

agreed, and this also says a lot about the culture of the company. I get the same type of response from Brent and the rest of the team. This company sets a standard for support in the industry.

Hi Mike,

I don't mean any disrespect when I say this, but when you re-quote RED info can you please link back to the post you're referring to? It gets to be a massive case of "chinese whispers" unless you do because you're quoting RED info through your interpretation of it. It gets confusing.

Personally I would not be speculating on anything and if it's not speculation, I want to see the quote from Jim or Jarred. There's just too much going on for anyone to take anything else as gospel.

Hope that makes sense.

I agree with this. While Mike is providing a service that Joseph Hutson once did before Ketch Rossi whisked him off to tour the U.S. and soon to Italy, Joseph always posted a link and never took ownership of the information he was providing.

There is so much pertinent information on a large forum like Reduser that many who come here need to identify a poster who has the time and inclination to ferret out the facts. But most of us do not trust anything being stated by a poster unless their signature is in RED, or at least yellow letters.

So, a link back to the information adds credibility to the post. Or at least identify the information in the post as a recollection of what has been posted.

That's cool Mike. Just as the threads get longer and longer it would be handy to be able to see where it's come from... especially when threads cross over with similar questions and replies. I wasn't having a shot at you.

Jarred, there has been some confusion in other threads (as I noted in my PM to you recently) and this post will certainly add to it, so will you confirm that the 2/3" cinema is in fact going to be released and not scrapped in favor of the 8x fixed or the epic-x? I think there are a lot of people like myself who would like to put their minds at ease. I understand that the x and 8x will be sold in greater volume and get priority but I just want to make sure that the 2/3 cinema is still on the road map.

I, like many others, am starting to purchase lenses for this camera which will be completely useless if it never comes out
 
Yes. It would be good if someone could confirm where Scarlet Cinema is.
All talk recently has been about the Scarlet 8x
Originally I think the Scarlet 8x and Scarlet Cinema seemed to be planned for simultaneous release.
But it certainly seems like the Scarlet 8x has now been given priority.

I wonder why.
It surely can't be for manufacturing reasons.
One would imagine that if anything, it would be easier to make the Scarlet Cinema than the Scarlet 8x.

Maybe Red is worried that the Scarlet Cinema will steal sales from their own Epic, and as a cheaper camera will reduce their revenue.

I hope that I'm wrong, and that there is some news about the Scarlet Cinema soon.

The Scarlet Cinema seems to be a perfect addition to the range.

It seems quite appropriate to make the analogy of 35mm and 16mm.
The Epic frame size is roughly that of 35mm film.
The Scarlet frame size is roughly that of 16mm film.

And in terms of resolution, just as 35mm film has greater resolution than 16mm, so the Epic has greater resolution than the Scarlet.

And of course, the Epic takes 35mm lenses, and the Scarlet takes 16mm lenses.

I think that the same features that have attracted filmmakers to 16mm would attract people to the Scarlet - smaller, lighter cameras, cost savings, cheaper lenses, savings in post-production (because less data), more depth of field making it easier to shoot documentaries without a focus puller, etc.

And if we continue the analogy, the Scarlet 8x might be compared with the Canon Scoopic or the Russian Krasnagorsk.

But the Scarlet Cinema would be a replacement to the Arri SR, and would allow 16mm filmmakers to use their favorite lenses.

I have no idea which is the bigger market, but I'm sure there is a market for the Scarlet Cinema.

If Red can produce a good set of Mini-primes, great.
But there are tons of good existing lenses out there for 16mm cameras in PL mount, and a few decent lenses for HD cameras in the C-mount.

I understand that everyone at Red is hard at work on the Epic roll-out, but please let us know where the Scarlet Cinema program is at the moment.

Hi Paul, nice points there regarding scarlet 2/3"

Just wanted to mention that I don't think you need to be too concerned about RED not releasing it because it would eat into sales of the EPIC. I don't think RED has current revenue on the top of their list of concerns at the moment and even if they did, I doubt that the sorts of people that are purchasing EPICs are the type of people who would consider the scarlet an equivalent replacement. I don't think you need to be worried about RED being devious :)

Hello All

Forgive me if this has been posted elsewhere. My buisiness partner and I are going to NAB with the intention of placing an order for an epic x. Is red taking deposits for the camera (and if so how much$) or are they taking the full price of the camera for orders?

Also since this is my first post here, i'd like to say that i think this is a fantastic resource, and I'm looking forward to participating in the community for years to come! C some of you in Vegas!

Wonder what the price for that sweet titanium PL mount would be? I love the idea of a Scarlet M package. Don't know if I could afford it, but love the idea. With a mount robust enough to handle an Angenieux 12-240 sans lens supports it could be just the ticket for me. Could it perhaps be a way to introduce Scarlet sooner while working toward a resolution to the parts supply problem?
