An update on our LV Hilton "trunk show" during NAB.
We will recieve the public in suite # 1049 at the Hilton, next door to the Convention Center. NOTE : THIS IS A CHANGE FROM PREVIOUS POSTS
THAT ROOM NUMBER AGAIN IS 1049.

We will be there Monday , Tuesday and Wednesday, April 20-22.

We will present the first three prototypes from the five-lens high speed primes set conceived by Luma Tech Inc. and executed by LOMO PLC of Russia, using Schott optical glass.

The 35mm, 50mm & 85mm T1.3 lenses will be viewable via a RED ONE camera and lens projection.

A few facts:
The set will consist of 18, 25, 35, 50mm & 85mm T1.3 with uniform, fixed 95mm fronts and full insustry standard gearing.

NEW modern lens designs and mechanical units offer high opitcal performance and ultra-high speed apertures (f1.2/T1.3).

To ensure useful application on developing digital formats, the lenses produce an image circle of 33.5mm. Adequate for the 15 x 30mm 5K format. I believe this makes them the only utra-high aperture lenses to do so, down to 18mm.

Pricing has been set at US$ 32, 500.00 for the five lens set. We will be offering special "show pricing" to those who visit our suite during NAB. We have already accepted several advance reservations (10% deposit required).

Luma Tech founder Gregory Mirand will be in attendance.

If you want to RSVP or make an appointment (or just show up) you can
do so through the official Luma Tech, Inc website (www.lumatechinc.com) or just email , or call, me.
email: cp@seriousgear.com
Tel: (206) 285-4776. This number will forward to my mobile during NAB.

Thank you !

NOW this is interesting news indeed. Well done! That gives you quite an advantage.

The price is very good IMHO, considering these are T1.3 lenses across the board.

I think realistically speaking, it is down to just two real contenders at this point vying for people's lens purchase money - Luma Tech Illuminas and the Red Pro Primes, which are cheaper but are T1.8 and don't have an 18mm lens in the 5 lens initial set.

Delivery schedules are the other thing. Buy now/soon and get T1.8 lenses, or hold off until Q4 2009 and get T1.3 lenses for more money.

Interesting times for lens buyers.... :)

Thanks for the info Charles!

Luma Tech Illuminas and the Red Pro Primes, which are cheaper

I was hoping I could get a Red Pro Prime set for an even 20k with the 18mm (instead of the 100mm). Now I just wonder what price the Red Pro Prime 18mm will be as it is probably harder and more expensive to manufacture.
Either way, I would love to be able to check out both lenses.

2009 is the year of the pl cinema lenses for sure. its about damn time. =)

Agreed--with 3rd option being Birger w/ Canon or Nikon...an option which I think complements those above.

What does a set of the S16mm lenses cost?

I'd given up on ever seeing those out again. So you guys are the new USA dealers for these? I hope you folks are more reliable than the last distributor.
(If you were the last one...sorry about that).

Hi

I'm interested in these lenses. We have a set of ultra primes and for obvious reasons are considering augmenting with MP as way of achieving the stop. The extra stop is interesting for both light transmission and optical reasons.

The reason why I haven't gone with Super Speeds is that they are like 2 lenses (sharper than UP at 5.6 and milky soft wide open) and I don't want that.

Could somebody please (I can't make NAB) check out the prototype wide open. I accept that any lens (inc MP) is a bit softer wide open but a bit is all I want.

Other things that could be checked if anyone was inclined:

How they flare with lights just in shot and just out of shot. The old S16 lenses seemed to flare as bad (or good) with both. I think this was because the imaging circles where much too big.

Close focus... both the ability to actually get close and the quality loss in doing so.

Also check if the 18 is as good as the other lenses. Not loving the SS 18 at all!

thanks to anyone reporting back anything!!

regards

Michael L

I fear I may be in the same boat as Michael. Asked IllumaTech for specs on the lenses, and Fred told me that they would be unveiled at the show (appreciated) - but, I don't want to unduly burden him by asking he "update" me and forward specs just in case I can't make the show.:crying:

IllumaTech's website offers little to none of the "tech-specs" that Arri throws out about their lenses - sizes, etc.

The best information I've gotten about the lenses is that they are 90mm fronts - and I got that from this forum.

I'm really interested in this set. Especially when I found out that the new Zeiss Compacts are going to be as slow as they say. T3.6 in the 18? Wow.

If anyone could post info as soon as possible, that would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Chris.

Illumina Primes from Luma Tech at NAB

OK, we are installed at our Las Vegas Hilton central tower now (Rms 1049 & 1050), with lens projection and a RED ONE for viewing the lenses.

Three prototype S35 lenses are on display, and the entire line of S16 Illumina primes for 2K (8-50mm t1.3). In projection, the lenses have incredible contrast and field illumination thanks to a 33.5mm image circle. They have the least flair of any ultra-high speed lens I have seen. Stopping down from T1.3 to T4, you have to put your eye 1 foot from the screen to perceive the difference. You can hardly see it all all from a distance of 6 feet.

Briefly, here are some partial specs:
Focal Lengths: 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm f1.2/T1.3
Lens Mount: PL only
Coatings: multi-layer BBAR
Iris Leaves: 9
Front Diameter: 95mm
Angular focus rotation: 270 deg. (production models)
Gearing: focus and iris 0.8mm metric module
T-stop range: T1.3-T16
Image Circle: 33.5mm dia.
35mm Min. focus: 14"
50mm Min focus: 2' 2"
85mm Min focus: 3'

Come up and see the units at NAB, have a bottle of water and talk "show pricing".

First Deliveries anticipated (but not guaranteed) before end of 2009.

Thanks !

No, all fourteen Arri Zeiss MPs (from 14mm to 150mm) seem to cover the 15 x 30mm 5K format with no problem:)

Charles, what if any comparison could you make in relation to a Super Speed WFO and an Illumina S35 WFO in regards to sharpness and contrast?

MTF at 50 lp/mm, WFO would be great as we could compare them to other brands.
